Synthesis and Emulsion Properties of Self-emulsifiable Polyethylene Waxes (자기유화 폴리에틸렌 왁스의 합성 및 에멀젼 특성 연구)

  • Self-emulsifiable polyethylene (PE) wax was prepared using acrylic acid grafted PE wax with potassium hydroxide and various emulsifiers for the economic production of PE wax emulsion. Modification reaction completion was confirmed that the peak from carbonyl group of acrylic acid disappeared and the new peak from carboxylic acid salts appeared in the FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared) spectrum data. Self-emulsifiable properties of the modified PE wax were investigated by the emulsion size and the stability of wax emulsion without any additional emulsifiers. According to self-emulsifiable properties, the emulsion size and stability were varied on the concentration and structure of the emulsifier. The greater emulsion concentration and hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) characteristics of the emulsifier resulted in the smaller emulsion size and better emulsion stability. In addition, the use of emulsifiers mixture was more effective to obtain smaller size and uniform distribution of emulsion than that of single emulsifier in PE wax modification reaction. Especially, modified PE wax with OAE-5 and LAE-15 emulsifiers mixture shows excellent performance in terms of the smallest emulsion size ($4.34{\mu}m$) and emulsion stability.

Foliage Contact Herbicidal Activity of Dehydrocostus lactone Derived from Saussurea lappa (목향(Saussurea lappa) 유래 Dehydrocostus lactone의 경엽 접촉 살초 활성)

  • A foliage contact herbicidal substance was separated from ethyl ether fraction in n-hexane extract of Saussurea lappa roots and identified as dehydrocostus lactone [(3aS,6aR,9aR,9bS)-3,6,9-trimethylidene-3a,4,5,6a,7,8,9a,9b-octahydroazuleno[5,4-d]furan-2-one](DHCL). When DHCL at 4,000 ppm was foliage-applied to two grasses and two broadleaf plants, greater than 85% necrotic injury was obtained from large crabgrass, maize and soybean, whereas only about 40% necrotic injury appeared in black nightshade, indicating that DHCL has no gross morphological selectivity, but shows difference in contact response among the plant species tested. Conductivity in incubation medium of the leaf disks treated with DHCL increased as the incubation time continued. Relatively low contact injury in black nightshade as compared with the other three plant species tested was attributed to decrease in absorption of DHCL due to relatively high amount of cuticle. DHCL did not require light in the herbicidal action and there were no inhibitory effects on seed germination and cell elongation. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase activity was inhibited by 30% and 58% at $100\;{\mu}M$ and $1000\;{\mu}M$ DHCL, respectively. These results suggested that the herbicidal action of DHCL was related with inhibition of fatty acid synthesis which in turn caused to weaken cell membrane integrity.

Synthesis and characterization of potassium titanate whisker by hydrothermal process (수열합성법을 이용한 티탄산칼륨 휘스커의 합성과 특성)

  • $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker have been synthesized by hydrothermal process at low temperature and pressure condition. The average length of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was about in the range of 300 nm to $1.5{\mu}m$. The average diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was 15 nm to 60 nm. The aspect ratio of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was below 12. The average length and diameter of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker can be controlled by reaction temperature and time, KOH molar ratio. $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was synthesized from more than $210^{\circ}C$ and 4 h at reaction temperature and time. The length of the whisker is increased with increasing reaction temperature. Characterization of the synthesized $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ whisker was carried out using the XRD and FE-SEM.

  • Melanin is one of the most important factors affecting skin color. Melanogenesis is the bioprocess of melanin production by melanocytes in the skin and hair follicles and is mediated by several enzymes, such as tyrosinase, tyrosinase related protein (TRP)-1, and TRP-2. Convenient enzymatic transformation of the simple phenol pyrogallol with polyphenol oxidase originating from pear to an oxidative product, purpurogallin, was efficient. The structure of the pyrogallol oxidation product was identified on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The biotransformation product purpurogallin showed significant inhibitory effects against both melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner in B16 melanoma cells. In addition, purpurogallin significantly attenuated melanin production by inhibiting TRP-1, and TRP-2 expression through modulation of their corresponding transcription factors, and microphthalamia- associated transcription factor in B16 cells. Consequently, purpurogallin derived from convenient enzymatic transformation of pyrogallol might be a beneficial material for reducing skin hyperpigmentation.

Preparation and Characterization of Kalsilite ($KAISiO_4$) as a Novel Inorganic Membrane Material (새로운 무기분리막 재료로서의 Kalsilite ($KAISiO_4$) 제조와 물성)

  • Membrane process has been focused as an alternative separation process because not only it exhibits a high selectivity compared with a traditional distillation process, but also it is known to be an energy saving separation process. Inorganic membrane, especially zeolite membrane, has been studied since it can be operated in severe conditions compared to the organic membranes. Recently, new zeolite materials are tested as an inorganic membrane material to overcome disadvantages of existing zeolite membranes. Kalsilite can be used as an inorganic membrane material for gas separation and selective water separation from water/organic mixtures because it is expected to be hydrophilic resulted from Si/Al ratio of 1 like zeolite 4A and has a narrow pore size of 0.36 nm. In this study, kalsilite was synthesized by a new economical hydrothermal process using Si : Al : K : $H_2O$ mole ratio of 1 : 1 : 8 : 60. The synthesized kalsilite powder was confirmed by XRD and has a mean diameter of $2.73{\mu}m$. The vapor adsorption test showed the synthesized kalsilite is hydrophilic.

Ultra-Rapid Real-Time PCR for the Detection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) (Ultra Rapid Real-Time PCR에 의한 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)의 신속진단법)

  • For the detection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), multiple and ultra-rapid real-time PCR methods were developed. The target DNA sequences were deduced from HIV-1 specific 495bp partial env gene (gi_1184090) and from HIV-2 specific 294 bp partial env gene (gi_1332355), and were synthesized by using PCR-based gene synthesis on the reason of safety. Ultra-rapid real-time PCR was performed by $Genspector^{TM}$ using microchip-based, $1\;{\mu}l$ of reaction volume with extremely short time in each 3 step in PCR. The detection including DNA-amplification and melting temperature analysis was completed inner 15 minutes. The HIV-1 specific 117 bp-long and HIV-2 specific 119 bp-long PCR products were successfully amplified from minimum of template,2.3 molecules of each env gene. This kind of real-time PCR was designated as ultra-rapid real-time PCR in this study and it could be applied not only an alternative detection method against HIV, but also other pathogens using PCR-based detection.

Physical and Electrochemical Properties of Gallium Oxide (β-Ga2O3) Nanorods as an Anode Active Material for Lithium Ion Batteries (리튬이온전지용 산화갈륨 (β-Ga2O3) 나노로드 (Nanorods) 음극 활물질의 물리적.전기화학적 특성)

  • $\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ nanorods were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method using nickel-oxide nanoparticle as a catalyst and gallium metal powder as a source material. The average diameter of nanorods was around 160 nm and the average length was $4{\mu}m$. Also, we confirmed that the synthesis of nanorods follows the vapor-solid growth mechanism. From the results of X-ray diffraction and HR-TEM observation, it can be found that the synthesized nanorods consisted of a typical core-shell structure with single-crystalline $\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ core with a monoclinic crystal structure and an outer amorphous gallium oxide layer. Li/$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ nanorods cell delivered capacity of 867 mAh/g-$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ at first discharge. Although the Li/$\beta-Ga_{2}O_{3}$ nanorods cell showed low coulombic efficiency at first cycle, the cell exhibited stable cycle life property after fifth cycle.

Synthesis and Characterization of Zeolite 4A on Activated Carbon Supports (활성탄 지지체상에서 제올라이트 4A 합성 및 특성)

  • Zeolite 4A-impregnated complex molecular sieve was prepared by hydrothermal reaction after aluminosilicate gel was penetrated into the pore of activated carbon granule. The crystals of zeolite 4A mainly were formed in the macropore of activated carbon, and their average diameter is $0.8{\mu}m$. The pore volume of activated carbon granule is $0.67m{\ell}/g$, and the pore volume of the sample including 21.6wt% of zeolite 4A crystal is $0.41m{\ell}/g$ decreasing the pore volume by 40% due to the crystallization of zeolite 4A crystals on the internal surface of activated carbon. The calcium ion exchange capacity of zeolite 4A-impregnated sample is 320mg $CaCO_3/g$ zeolite, and this value is almost the same as that of zeolite 4A powder. The crystal of zeolite 4A was not separated from the support of activated carbon granule in the course of ultrasonic dispersion. The adsorption isotherm of water on zeolite 4A-impregnated sample shows the intermediate shape between types, I and III. In addition, zeolite 4A-impregnated sample shows the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties simultaneously.

Anti-thrombic Properties of the Oriental Herbal Medicine, Daejowhan

  • The anti-thrombic properties of the oriental herbal medicine Daejowhan(DJW, 大造丸) which consists of 11 kinds of herbs (indicated as ratio) of Rehmanniae Radix 24%, Hominis Placenta 5%, Testudinis Carapax 9%, Eucommiae Cortex 9%, Asparagi Radix 9%, Phellodendri Cortex 9%, Achyranthis Radix 7%, Liriopis Tuber 7%, Angelicae Sinensis Radix 7%, Ginseng Radix 5% and Schizandrae Fructus 3% were investigated. The water extracts from DJW inhibited Platelet-activating factor(PAF) induced platelet aggregation. DJW was extracted with methanol and further fractionated by ethylacetate. A 70% methanol extract showed a strong inhibition against PAF-induced aggregation in vitro and in vivo assays. The ethylacetate soluble fraction was shown to have inhibitory effect on PAF-induced platelet aggregation in vitro assay. The ethylacetate soluble fraction specially protected against the lethality of PAF, while verapamil did not afford any protection. These results indicate that the water extracts and alcoholic-fractions inhibit the action of PAF in vivo by an antagonistic effect on PAF, so that it may be useful in treating disorders caused by PAF, such as acute allergy, inflammation, asthma, gastrointestinal ulceration, toxic shock and so forth. DJW was investigated regarding its assumed anti-thrombic action on human platelets which was deduced from its ability to suppress Arachidonic acid(AA)-induced aggregation, exocytosis of ATP, and inhibition of Cyclooxygenase(COX) and Thromboxane synthase(TXS) activity. The latter two effects were estimated from the generation of Prostaglandin $E_2(PGE_2)$ and Thromboxane $A_2(TXA_2)$ respectively. Exogenously applied AA ($100{\mu}mol/{\ell}$) provoked a $89\%$ aggregation of platelets, the release of 14 pmol ATP, and the formation of either 225 pg $TXA_2$ or 45 pg $PGE_2$, each parameter being related to 106 platelets. An application of DJW 5 min before AA dose-dependently diminished aggregation, ATP-release and the synthesis of $TXA_2$ and $PGE_2$ with $IC_{50}$ values of 74, 108, 65, $72{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively. The similarity of the $IC_{50}$ values suggest an inhibition of COX by DJW as primary target, thus suppressing the generation of $TXA_2$ which induces aggregation of platelets and exocytosis of ATP by its binding on $TXA_2$-receptors.

Hydrogenation of Methyl Dodecanoate Using Copper Chromite (분산액에서의 Copper Chromite 합성 및 Methyl Dodecanoate의 수소화반응)

  • The hydrogenation reaction of methyl dodecanoate for the synthesis of 1-dodecanol has been carried out in the presence of a copper chromite catalyst. The catalysts were synthesized by ceramic method, co-precipitation, and improved co-precipitation method and the particles were characterized by SEM and XRD. Also, the products of the reaction were assigned by GC, GC/MSD and NMR. The particles synthesized by each method showed (1) a spherical shape with the size of 3.2 to $7.0{\mu}m$, (2) an agglomerated spherical shape with the size of 50 to 500 nm and (3) a spherical shape with smaller particle size, respectively. Especially, in order to control the size of particles, the particles were synthesized in various dispersant solutions as Span 80, polyacrylate, and polyethyleneglycols (PEGs). The particles synthesized in PEG (Mw = 4000) solution showed the smallest particle size of 30 to 50 nm and the regularity of the particle size distribution. Our experimental results elucidated that the activity of catalyst for hydrogenation increases with decreasing the size of catalyst particle. The highest yield of dodecanol in the hydrogenation reaction was 95.5% when copper chromite synthesized in the PEG solution was used as a catalyst in the optimized reaction condition.
