  • $BaTiO_3$-coated Fe nanofibers are synthesized via a three-step process. ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanofibers with an average diameter of approximately 200 nm are first prepared using an electrospinning process followed by a calcination step. The $BaTiO_3$ coating layer on the nanofiber is formed by a sol-gel process, and a thermal reduction process is then applied to the core-shell nanofiber to selectively reduce the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ to Fe. The thickness of the $BaTiO_3$ shell is controlled by varying the reaction time. To evaluate the electromagnetic (EM) wave-absorbing abilities of the $BaTiO_3@Fe$ nanofiber, epoxy-based composites containing the nanofibers are fabricated. The composites show excellent EM wave absorption properties where the power loss increases to the high frequency region without any degradation. Our results demonstrate that the $BaTiO_3@Fe$ nanofibers obtained in this work are attractive candidates for electromagnetic wave absorption applications.

  • Iron-oxide nanopowders were synthesized by a pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) in various ambient gas conditions. SEM measurement indicates that the spherical iron nanoparticles are about 50 nm in diameter. The phase analysis for the produced iron-oxide powders was systematically investigated by using $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectra and the results show that classified phases of $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$ can be controlled by regulating the oxygen concentration in the mixed gas during the PWE process. A quadrupole line on the center of $M\ddot{o}ssbauer$ spectrum represents the superparamagnetic phase of 12 % from ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ phase.

  • The Daebong deposit consists of gold-silver-bearing mesothermal massive quartz veins which fill fractures along fault zones($N10{\sim}20^{\circ}W,\;40{\sim}60^{\circ}SW$) within banded gneiss or granitic gneiss of Precambrian Gyeonggi massif. Ore mineralization of the deposit is composed of massive white quartz vein(stage I) which was formed in the same stage by multiple episodes of fracturing and healing and transparent quartz vein(stage II) which is separated by a major faulting event. The hydrothermal alteration of stage I is sericitization, chloritization, carbonitization, pyritization, silicification and argillization. Sericitic zone occurs near and at quartz vein and includes mainly sericite, quartz, and minor illite, carbonates and epidote. Chloritic zone occurs far from quartz vein and is composed of mainly chlorite, quartz and minor sericite, carbonates and epidote. Fe/(Fe+Mg) ratios of sericite and chlorite range 0.36 to 0.59($0.51{\pm}0.10$) and 0.66 to 0.73($0.70{\pm}0.02$), and belong to muscovite-petzite series and brunsvigite, respectively. Calculated $Al_{IV}-Fe/(Fe+Mg)$ diagrams of sericite and chlorite suggest that this can be a reliable indicator of alteration temperature in Au-Ag deposits. Calculated activities of chlorite end member are $a3(Fe_5Al_2Si_3O_{10}(OH){_6}=0.00964{\sim}0.0291,\;a2(Mg_5Al_2Si_3O_{10}(OH){_6}= 9.99E-07{\sim}1.87E-05,\;a1(Mg_6Si_4O_{10}(OH){_6}=5.61E-07{\sim}1.79E-05$. It suggest that chlorite from the Daebong deposit is iron-rich chlorite formed due to decreasing temperature from $T>450^{\circ}C$. Calculated $log\;{\alpha}K^+/{\alpha}H^+,\;log\;{\alpha}Na^+/{\alpha}H^+,\;log\;{\alpha}Ca^{2+}/{\alpha}^2H^+$ and pH values during wall-rock alteration are $4.6(400^{\circ}C),\;4.1(350^{\circ}C),\;4.0(400^{\circ}C),\;4.2(350^{\circ}C),\;1.8(400^{\circ}C),\;4.5(350^{\circ}C),\;5.4{\sim}6.5(400^{\circ}C)\;and\;5.1{\sim}5.5(350^{\circ}C)$, respectively. Gain elements (enrichment elements) during wallrock alteration are $K_2O,\;P_2O_5,\;Na2O$, Ba, Sr, Cr, Sc, V, Pb, Zn, Be, Ag, As, Ta and Sb. Elements(Sr, V, Pb, Zn, As, Sb) represent a potentially tools for exploration in mesothermal and epithermal gold-silver deposits.

  • Ba-ferrite thin films were prepared on Si substrate with ${\alpha}$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ underlayer by a pulsed laser deposition system and characterized by X-ray, SEM, Mossbauer spectroscopy and VSM. The appropriate conditions of pulsation in ${\alpha}$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ and Ba-ferrite were the oxygen pressure of 0.1 Torr at a substrate temperature of 400$^{\circ}C$. Ba-ferrite crystals had the forms of ellipsoidal or needle and the grains shaped the more lumps with increasing the film thickness. Mossbauer spectroscopy assured that the direction of atomic spin in Fe ion was not random but had the tendency of arrangement normal to the substrate. The coercive force and squareness of hysteresis were larger in normal than in plane to the substrate but, the magnetic saturation moment was contrary to them. The spin arrangement was strongly affected by ${\alpha}$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ underlayer and the high coercive force and squareness were influenced by this. The crystal structure was conformed to be a Magntoplumbite symmetry with the hexagonal unit cell and the lattice constant of a increased with increasing film thickness, while c decreased

  • $Fe_3O_4$ having half metallic property is one of the efficient spin filtering materials which are widely used in spintronic research field and ZnO is wide band gap semiconductor which can be used by tunnel barrier or semiconductor channel in spin MOSFET. We investigated the magnetic and the electric properties of $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayer fabricated on c-$Al_2O_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). For multilayer films, PLD was performed at variable temperatures such as $200{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and at target distance from 40 to 80 mm, KrF eximer laser of 1.5 $J/cm^2$ and a reputation rate of 2Hz. $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers were deposited at $4{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr. After fabricating $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers, $Fe_3O_4$/ZnO multilayers were treated by RTA(Rapid Thermal Annealing) at various temperature to change magnetic phase. The magnetism of the multilayer is changed by thickness of the ZnO tunnel barrier. Magnetic phase of FexOy showed a very small magnetism due to $Fe_2O_3$ ${\alpha}$-phase, but large magnetism from $Fe_3O_4$ or $Fe_2O_3$ ${\gamma}$-phase was observed. In the present study, effect of the ZnO thickness on the MR (magnetoresistance) ratio was investigated in detail.

  • The oxidation of carbon monoxide by gaseous oxygen on 0.53, 1.02, and 1.51 mol $\%$CoO-doped $-Fe_2O_3$ catalysts has been investigated in the temperature range from 340 to 480$^{\circ}C$ under various CO and $O_2$ partial pressures. The oxidation rates have been correlated with 1.5-order kinetics; the 0.5-order with respect to $O_2$ and the first-order with respect to CO. In the above temperature range, the activation energy is 0.34 $\pm$ 0.01 eV${\cdot}$$mol^{-1}$. The electrical conductivity of 0.53, 1.02, and 1.51 mol %CoO-doped $\alpha$-$Fe_2O_3$ has been measured at 350$^{\circ}C$ under various $P_{CO}and $P_{O_2}$. From the conductivity data it was found that $O_2$ was adsorbed on Vo formed by doping with CoO, while CO appeared essentially to be chemisorbed on the lattice oxygen of the catalyst surface. The proposed oxidation mechanism and the dominant defect were supported by the agreement between the kinetic data and conductivities.

  • Nano-multilayered $Cr_{25.2}Al_{19.5}Si_{4.7}N_{50.5}$ films were deposited on the steel substrate by cathodic arc plasma deposition. They were corroded at $900^{\circ}C$ in $Ar/1%SO_2$ gas in order to study their corrosion behavior in sulfidizing/oxidizing environments. Despite the presence of sulfur in the gaseous environment, the corrosion was governed by oxidation, leading to formation of protective oxides such as $Cr_2O_3$ and ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, where Si was dissolved. Iron diffused outward from the substrate to the film surface, and oxidized to $Fe_2O_3$ and $Fe_3O_4$. The films were corrosion-resistant up to 150 h owing to the formation of thin ($Cr_2O_3$ and/or ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$)-rich oxide layers. However, they failed when corroded at $900^{\circ}C$ for 300 h, resulting in the formation of layered oxide scales due to not only outward diffusion of Cr, Al, Si, Fe and N, but also inward movement of sulfur and oxygen.

  • In this study, an ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ (hematite) coated porcelain plate was sintered in a temperature range from $1100^{\circ}C$ to $1250^{\circ}C$ using ferrous sulfate. The specimens were investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-visible spectrophotometer. It was confirmed that ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ (hematite) was densely fused to the surface at several tens of ${\mu}m$, the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ (hematite) was in the form of thin platelet and polyhedra, and no other compounds appeared in the sintering process. In the specimen coated with ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ (hematite), the reflectance spectra show a red absorption band of 560-650 nm. The $L^*$ value decreased from 53.18 to 46.94 with the firing temperature. The values of $a^*$ and $b^*$ were at 19.03 and 15.25 at $1100^{\circ}C$ and gradually decreased with increasing temperature; these values decreased rapidly at $1250^{\circ}C$ to 11.54 and 7.98, respectively. It is considered that the new phases are formed by the phase transition of the porcelain plate (clay), and thus the $a^*$ and $b^*$ values are greatly influenced.

  • In this study, we tried to synthesis iron hydroxide suitable for longitudinal magnetic recording media from waste acid, which is a by-product of an iron works factory. Effects of initial pH of reactants, reaction temperature, reaction time for the synthesis of acicular iron hydroxide were studied in relation to particle properties of iron hydroxide and magnetic properties of maghemite powders. As the pH in reactant solution increased, $\beta$-FeOOH(pH=4.5), mixture of $\beta$-FeOOH and $\alpha$-FeOOH(4.5$\alpha$-FeOOH and Fe3O4(6.4$\alpha$-FeOOH (pH>13) was found to from in order. Especially, $\alpha$-FeOOH formed above pH 13 was single phase with superior acicularity. The temperature range over which the single-phase goethite can be formed increased as the initial pH of reactants increased (pH 13:10~5$0^{\circ}C$, pH 13.2:10~7$0^{\circ}C$, pH 13.5:0~8$0^{\circ}C$). The goethite formed between 40~6$0^{\circ}C$ has superior characteristics because the acicularity increased with increasing temperature but at high temperature (>6$0^{\circ}C$) Fe3O4 (pH=13) was found to start to form. Generally, single phase of goethite was found to form after one hour when an optimized condition. The particle size of goethite did not change as the reaction time increased over one hour. Accordingly, the magnetic properties of ${\gamma}$-Fe2O3 produced from goethite were not altered.

  • Nanoparticles of iron oxides have been prepared by the levitational gas condensation (LGC) method, and their structural and magnetic properties were studied by XRD, TEM and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Fe clusters were evaporated from a surface of the levitated liquid Fe droplet and then condensed into nanoparticles of iron oxide with particle size of 14 to 30 nm in a chamber filled with mixtures of Ar and $O_2$ gases. It was found that the phase transition from both $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ and $\alpha$-Fe to $Fe_3O_4$, which was evaluated from the results of Mossbauer spectra, strongly depended on the $O_2$ flow rate. As a result, $\gamma$-$Fe_2O_3$ was synthesized under the $O_2$ flow rate of 0.1$\leq$$Vo_2$(Vmin)$\leq$0.15, whereas $Fe_3O_4$ was synthesized under the $O_2$, flow rate of 0.15$\leq$$Vo_2$(Vmin)$\leq$0.2.
