Aim & Scope

Journal of the Korean Solar Energy Society publishes research papers covering original work in all areas of solar energy technology and application for generation of mechanical and electrical power. Discussions of policy and regulatory issues affecting solar energy technologies and their implementation are included and manuscripts on wind power energy, biomass and small hydro power are also invited. Topic areas included are: fundamental process and theory, solar collectors, energy conversion, photovoltaics, solar thermal power, solar buildings, building energy conservation, wind energy systems, energy storage and energy policy.

    The suggested year round solar air conditioning system has been developed for cooling and heating. In particular, this system focused on cooling and dehumidification and it could reduce a peak time owing to the use of air conditioners in summer. This study was performed to find out how much heating loads could be saved and furthermore whether this suggested system would be possible to do heating without a switch of system in real situations. Through model house experiments, the following conclusions were obtained. 1) The collector efficiency was 36% at maximum, but more improved structure of suggested collector could increase its efficiency. 2) The temperature of outlet air was about $30^{\circ}C$ and it could reduce heating loads. 3) Measured temperature and calculated one agreed well within ${\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$.

    This paper represents the heat storage performance of the flat plate solar collector. This research aims to application for fishing ship on the sea, and the solar collector has among of motions with pitching and rolling thus, this collector has to be a forced type circulation. In this research, we investigated the solar collector performance for the various collector tilt angle. As the experimental results with three types, we found that the S-type collector was excellent.

    Thermal performance of a SAAHPS (Solar and Ambient-air-assisted Heat Pump System) located in KIER is simulated with TRNSYS 14.2. The SAAHPS is composed of dual evaorators, each of which is used as a solar fluid heat source and an air fluid heat source. Polynomial coefficients data for the SAAHPS is supplied with Frigosoft, a program widely used for heat pump modeling. In general, collector area and storage volume are 2 key parameters in SAAHPS thermal performance. A parametric study is performed in this study to assess sensitivity of collector area and storage volume in SAAHPS. We concluded that firstly collector area and storage volume are the primary variables in SAAHPS thermal performance, secondly COP of SAAHPS is higher than that of conventional heat pumps. Therefore. collector efficiency can be enhanced swith SAAHPS during a heating season.

    The present study has been conducted to offer an geometrically optimal structure of a storage tank for a regenerator. In this paper, three kinds of baffle plates supposed to increase the regeneration rate and classified as "Type A($L^*$=0.25, 80(L)$\times$300(W)$\times$50 (H) [mm])", "Type B($L^*$=0.5, 150(L)$\times$300(W)$\times$50 (H) [mm])", and "Type C($L^*$=0.75, 230(L)$\times$300(W)$\times$50(H) [mm])" were suggested and tested. They were placed between the vertical C-C layers in the tank. Solution temperature and concentration were used to evaluate the regeneration rate. As a result, the regeneration rate was better in "Type C".

    A model house with a "Ondol" heating working with solar energy and supplied by circulation air was investigated both experimentally and theoretically, A calculation method was developed for interpreting the measured values and for comparing several variants, This calculation method together with the measurement result is presented in the following. The gain in energy of the collector(Trombe wall type with TWD) measured on a particularly selected winter day with plenty of radiation amounted to approximately 31 % of the total solar radiation.

    Multi A/C is consisted of one outdoor unit and several indoor units. When the Multi Air conditioner is installed, we have to be cautious of the length of pipe arrangements. When the pipe arrangement is installed with unbalance or too long, there can be cooling capacity losses and low EER. An experimental study was carried out about the operation characteristic of Multi Air conditioner varying the length of pipe arrangements. If the pipe arrangement of the system is 15m, the cooling capacity and EER were decreased 0.8% and 1.3% respectively compared to the case when pipe arrangement is 5m. In case of 25m, the cooling capacity and EER were decreased 10.7% and 12.2% respectively compared to the case of 5m. When the length of pipe is not same each other, it is profitable to make the pipe length of highest capacity indoor unit shortest.

    An experimental study was carried out in a cavity with upper channel and square heat surface by visualization equipment with Mach-Zehnder interferometer and laser apparatus. The visualization system consists of 2-dimensional sheet light by Argon-Ion Laser with cylindrical lens and flow picture recording system. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system(CACTUS'2000). Obtained result showed various flow patterns. Severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet flow is collided with the counter-clockwise rotating main primary vortex. Photographs of Mach-Zehnder are also compared in terms of constant heat flux.

    The purpose of this study is to improve heat transfer by attaching rectangular fins to tube. Experiments were carried out under the following conditions - Aspect ratio$(W_f/R_f)$ is 0.7, 1.2 and 1.8. Temperature conversion between high and low positions of water in the thermal storage appeared because maximum density point of water is about $4^{\circ}C$ and inlet direction of working fluid influenced conductive heat transfer Compared with the unfinned tube(bare tube), the rectangular tube increased the ice thermal storage energy and the ice thermal storage energy was increased as aspect ratio was increased.
