A particle image velocimetry (PIV) was applied to a flow measurement in a transonic centrifugal impeller. A phase locked measurement technique every
$20\%$ blade pitch enabled a reconstruction of a velocity field over one blade pitch. The measured velocity field at the inducer of impeller clearly showed a shock wave generated on the suction surface of a blade. -
A new GA-3D-PTV technique has been constructed to measure an impinging jet. The measurement system consists of three CCD cameras, Ar-ion laser, an image grabber and a host computer. GA (Genetic Algorithm) was used based on one-to-one correspondences in order to take advantage of the combinatorial optimization in tracking the pairs of the whole particles of the two images having a time interval. Two fitness functions were introduced in order to enhance the correspondences of the particles. One was based on a concept of the continuum theory and the other one was based on a minimum distance error. The constructed GA-3D-PTV system was applied in success to the measurement of flow characteristics of the impinging jet.

The frequency responses on the sub-pixel evaluation technique were investigated using the Monte-calro Simulation technique. The frequency response by the FFT based cross-correlation gives very good results, however, the gain loss does exist for the small displacement, (less than 0.5 pixel). While, the no gain loss is observed in the Direct Cross-correlation, however, the sub-pixel accuracy was limited to be about 0.1 pixel, i.e., it could not detect the small displacement. To detect the higher accurate sub-pixel displacement, the gradient based technique is the best. For the small interrogation area (e.g., 4x4), only the gradient technique can detect the small displacement correctly.

Due to advances in digital image processing, computer and optical hardware, it is possible to extract full flow information from visualized flow images. Recently, the PIV/PTV methods have been accepted as a reliable velocity field measurement technique. In my laboratory, several velocity field measurement techniques have been developed and they were applied to various thermo-fluid flow problems. In this paper, some of the industrial applications will be discussed. As a result, the PIV/PTV technique was proved to be a powerful tool for industrial fluid flow diagnosis.

The flow field structures of two interacting parallel supersonic free jets are studied by flow visualization using planar laser-induced fluorescence of NO seeded in nitrogen gas. The experiments are carried out for several distances between two orifice centers and for various ratios of the pressure in the reservoir to that in the expansion chamber. The flow fields are visualized mainly on the plane including two jet centerlines and its characteristic shock system, especially a cell structure formed secondly by interaction of two jets, are analyzed. The positions of the normal shock depending on the pressure ratios are also compared.

A micro-PIV(particle image velocimetry) measurement has been conducted to investigate flow fields in such microfluidic devices as microchannels and micronozzle. The present study employs a state-of-art micro-PIV system which consists of epi-fluorescence microscope, 620nm diameter fluorescent seed particles and an 8-bit megapixel CCD camera. Velocity vector fields with a resolution of
$6.8\;\times\;6.8{\mu}m$ has been obtained, and the attention has been paid on the effect of varying measurement conditions of particle diameter and particle concentration on the resulting PIV results. In this study, the microfluidic elements were fabricated on plastic chips by means of MEMS processes and a subsequent molding process. Flow fields in a variety of microchannels as well as micronozzle have been investigated. -
Highly swept leading edge extensions(LEX) applied to delta wings have greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters. Fundamental approach by PIV method was adopted to study the basic flow of the vortex pair formation appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX. Three angles of attacks
$(16^{\circ},\;24^{\circ},\;28^{\circ})$ and four measuring section of chord length(LEX-on) and three section(LEX-off) were selected as experimental conditions. From the PIV analysis, maximum vorticity was found at a given chord length and maximum velocity was also detected at larger chord length where stronger vortex was generated. Furthermore, the effect of LEX was remarkable at the vortex pair distance indicating narrower distance at LEX-on case. -
Present paper describes the principles of PIV measurement approaching from the analytical view, which enables to explain the general form of principles covering all the PIV measurement, and that gives theoretical basis for its higher measurement performances. The explanation of the measurement principles started from the definition of governing equation in differential form as same as the gradient method, and the integral along the particle path line was executed to show the principle of the correlation method with same basis. The integral processes clearly shows the analytical reason why the correlation peak gives the terminal point of path line, and how the effects of deformation and rotation of fluid appears in the correlation map. These results have no differences from our experiences and understandings of the conventional PIV measurement definition in final form. However, the analytical approach enable to understand those facts a priori, and it makes easy to achieve the innovative higher performances of measurement. Analytical explanation clearly shows the behavior of the residual errors caused by the fluid motion, and it enables to analyze the measurement uncertainty theoretically.

The hierarchic recursive local-correlation PIV algorithm with CBC(correlation based correction) method was developed to increase the spatial resolution of PIV results and to reduce error vectors. This new algorithm was applied to the single-frame and double-frame cross-correlation PIV techniques. In order to evaluate its performance, the recursive algorithm was tested using synthetic images, PIV standard images from Visualization Society of Japan, real flows including ventilation flow inside a vehicle passenger compartment and wake behind a circular cylinder with rib let surface. As a result, most spurious vectors were suppressed by employing CBC method. In addition, the hierarchical recursive correlation algorithm improved largely the sub-pixel accuracy of PIV results by decreasing the interrogation window size, increasing spatial resolution significantly.

Vortex lock-on or resonance in the flow behind a circular cylinder is investigated from a time-resolved PIV when a single frequency oscillation is superimposed on the mean incident velocity. Measurements are made of the
$K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ and streamwise vortices in the wake-transition regime at the Reynolds number 360. Streamwise vortices at the lock-on and natural shedding states are observed, as well as the changes in the wake region with the change of the shedding frequency of lock-on state. When lock-on occurs, the vortex shedding frequency is found to be half the oscillation frequency as expected from previous experiments. At the lock-on state, the$K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortices are observed to be more disordered by the increased strength and spanwise wavelength of the streamwise vortices, which leads to a strong three-dimensional motion. Recirculation and vortex formation region at the lock-on state is reduced as the oscillating frequency is increased. By comparing the Reynolds stresses at the lock-on and natural shedding states,$\bar{u'u'}\;and \;\bar{u'u'}$ at the lock-on state are concentrated on the shear layer around the cylinder. The$\bar{u'u'}\;at\;f_o/f_n=2.0$ has a large value near the centerline, compared with that of other cases. Considering the traces of maximum of u', in the wake region near the cylinder, wake width at the lock-on state is wider than that at the natural shedding state. -
A simple new technique of particle depth position measurement, which can be applied for three-dimensional velocity measurement of fluid flows, is proposed. Two color illumination system that intensity is encoded as a function of z-coordinate is introduced. A calibration procedure is described and a profile of small sphere is detected by using the present method as preliminary test. Then, this method is applied to three-dimensional velocity field measurement of simple flow fields seeded with tracer particles. The motion of the particles is recorded by color 3CCD camera. The particle position in the image plane is read directly from the recorded image and the depth of each particle is measured by calculation of the intensity ratio of encoded two color illumination. Therefore three-dimensional velocity components are reconstructed. Although the result includes to some extent error, the feasibility of the present technique for three-dimensional velocity measurement was confirmed.

In a continuing effect to study the mixmg enhancement by large-scale streamwise vortices in lobed mixing flows, an advanced PIV system named as dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system was used in the present study to conduct simultaneous vorticity (all three components) measurement of an air jet exhausted from a lobed nozzle. Unlike 'classical' 2-D PIV system or conventional 'single-plane' stereoscopic PIV system, the dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system used in the present study can obtain the flow velocity (all three components) fields at two spatially separated planes simultaneously. Therefore, it can provide the distributions of all the three components of vorticity vectors instantaneously and simultaneously. The evolution and interaction characteristics of the large-scale streamwise vortices and azimuthal Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices in the lobed jet mixing flow were revealed instantaneously and quantitatively from the measurement results of the dual-plane stereoscopic PIV system. The characteristics of the mixing process in the lobed jet mixing flow were analyzed based on the simultaneous measurement results of the steamwise vorticity and azimuthal Kelvin-Helmholtz vorticity distributions.

PIV (particle image velocimetry) systems use a camera to take snapshots of particles carried by a fluid at some precise instants. Signal processing methods are then used to compute the flow velocity field. In this paper, the design of the camera objective (optics) is addressed. The optimization is done in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio of in-focus particles. Four different kinds of noise are considered: photon shot noise, thermal and read noise, background glow shot noise, and noise made by the other particles. A semi-empirical model for the lens aberrations of a two-doublet objective is first addressed, since further, it is shown that lens aberrations (low f-value
$f_{\#}$ ) should be used instead of the Fraunhofer diffraction (high f-value) for the fitting of the particle image size with the pixel size. Other important conclusions of the paper include the expression of optimum values for the magnification M, for the exposure period$\tau$ and for the pixel size$\xi$ . -
Researchers have investigated nasal flow both numerically and experimentally for centuries. Experimental studies most have suffered from various limitations necessary to allow the measurements to be obtained with available equipment. Nasal airflow can be subdivided into two interrelated categories; nasal airflow resistance and heat and mass transfer between the air stream and the walls of the nasal cavity. In this study, thanks to a new method for model casting by a combination of Rapid prototyping and curing of clear silicone, a transparent rectangular box containing the complex nasal cavity is made for PIV experiments. The CBC PIV algorithm is used for analysis. Average and RMS distributions are obtained for inspirational and expiration nasal airflows. Comparison between western and Korean nasal air flows are appreciated. Flow fields for Korean model shows some differences from western's. Flow resistances for breathing are measured with varying flow rates.

A two color PIV technique has been developed for visualization of complex and high speed flow in a ramjet combustor. Two color PIV has the advantages that velocity distributions in high speed flowfields can be measured simply by varying the time interval between two different laser beams and a directional ambiguity problem can be solved by color separation, and then a signal-to-noise ratio can be increased through nearly perfect cross-correlation. As a basic research of the ramjet engine, a 2-D shaped combustor with two symmetric air intakes has been manufactured and an experimental study has been conducted using a two color PIV technique. The flow characteristics such as recirculation zones, intake air mixing and turbulent kinetic energy have been investigated varying inlet angles and dome heights. It was found that the primary recirculation zone is affected mainly by the dome height, whereas the secondary recirculation zone is influenced by the air inlet angle.
