Aim & Scope

Ocean Science Journal is a scientific journal published quarterly(March, June, September, December) by the Korean Society of Oceanography(KSO) and Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute(KORDI). OSJ is international and interdisciplinary. Research articles, reviews and notes dealing with physical oceanography, biological oceanography/marine biology, chemical oceanography/marine chemistry, geological oceanography/marine geology, and marine pollution will be considered. OSJ aims to publish a very high quality scientific journal for researchers and other interested people throughout the world.

    The ${\Delta}^5$ sterols were measured in be sediments of Jinhae Bay surrounded by industrial cities to assess the sewage-derived contamination. The total concentrations of total sterols ranged from 2.03 to 19.56 ${\mu}g/g$ dry wt. The principal sterol was cholesterol with a contribution of more than 50% to total sterols. Coprostanol, providing an indication of long-term sewage loads, was found in all sediment samples and the concentrations were 0.03-3.86 ${\mu}g/g$ dry wt, accounting for 1-26% to total sterols. The cluster analysis of sampling stations indicated that the sewage-derived contamination was localized in inner Masan Bay.

    The study of microbial communities in sediments is impaired by the lack of reliable extraction methods. This study reports on the efficiency of recovery of a method for extracting bacteria, protists and diatoms from sandy sediments using a modified decant/fix method. The best extractions were achieved after fixation with a microtubule stabilising fixative and subsequent sonication for 80 seconds. We estimate that the efficiencies of recovery of bacteria and mixed heterotrophic flagellates were $96.4{\pm}3.5\%$ and $96.9{\pm}4.6\%$, respectively. Diatoms were recovered with an efficiency of 38-83% and varied considerably from species to species. This study suggests that the decant/fix method is effective in extracting small cells such as bacteria and heterotrophic flagellates, and that the efficiency of recovery of the method varies due to cell length and different types of organisms. When microbial carbon biomass had been underestimated by up to 32%, with much of that relating to larger cells such as microalgae and ciliates. We note that the corrected abundances may be still a subset of the total numbers present.

    Temporal variation of nutrients and dissolved major and trace elements have been studied in the Yeongsan River, Korea. There were significant temporal fluctuations in the concentrations of these elements depending upon the flow condition. $NH_4$, $PO_4$, Na, Mg, Ca, K, Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, As and U concentrations were inversely related to the flow; that is, they are the highest at low flow and the lowest at high flow. It indicates that these elements are derived from point sources such as rock weathering and/or human activities and then diluted by increasing flow. Meanwhile, Fe and Si concentrations varied proportionally to the flow indicating that they are derived from diffuse sources including reactions within soil. The concentration-flow relationships showed that hydrology of the river is the most important factor controlling the chemical composition of the Yeongsan riverwater, which was compatible of the results of R-mode factor analysis.

    I investigated whether US naval pulp wastes (pulverized paper products), which is planned to be dumped into offshore waters, may affect the ecology of major components of marine zooplankton. The presence of slurry (0.6% concentration - wet weight ; wet weight) did not significantly affect the population growth rates of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate Polykrikos kofoidii fed on Lingulodinium polyedrum, but significantly reduced the ingestion rates of the calanoid copepods Acartia spp. on L. polyedrum and those of the copepod Calanus pacificus on Akashiwo sanguinea (previously Gymnodinium sanguineum). However, C. pacificus, originally exposed to 0.6% slurry for 24 hour, can recover its feeding rates when slurry disappears. Therefore, if slurry is diluted quickly due to trubulence after being dumped at 0.6% concentration, its presence may not affect Calanus. Chemicals leached from slurry did not affect the feeding rate of Calanus. Therefore, mechanical interference by slurry on the feeding and/or swimming of copepods may be mainly responsible for the reduction of the ingestion rates.

    Butyltins (BTs) were measured in 2 species of shellfish and 16 species of fish collected along the Korean coast. Tributyltin (TBT) was detected in the mussels and oysters of sentinel organisms (20 to 940 ng Sn/g dry wt), indicating widespread contamination of TBT in the Korean coast. The elevated concentrations of TBT in the shellfish found in the sites near harbors or shipyards suggested that antifouling paints are probable major sources of butyltins in these areas. The TBT compound was detected in 12 out of 16 fish samples. The concentrations of TBT in fish muscles wee between 7 and 151 ng Sn/g dry wt, while the level in whole body of anchovy was very high (793 ng Sn/g dry wt). Exposure doses to Korean people via consumption of these marine products wee evaluated. The results suggested that the environmental levels of TBT were below the level of concern.
