Aim & Scope

Precision engineering and manufacturing issues are becoming ever more important in current and future technologies. New knowledge in this field will aid in the advancement of various technologies that are needed to gain industrial competitiveness. To this end the International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing (IJPEM) aims to disseminate relevant fundamental and applied research works of high quality to the international community through efficient and rapid publication. IJPEM covers original and novel research contributions in all aspects of precision engineering and manufacturing. The journal's specific focus areas include, but are not limited to: - Precision Manufacturing Processes - Measurements and Control - Robotics and Automation - Manufacturing Systems - Design and Materials - Machine Tools - Nano/Micro Technology - Biomechanical Engineering - Additive Manufacturing - Green Manufacturing Technology IJPEM is published monthly. The contents of the journal are classified into three parts: Regular Paper, Short Communication and Review.     This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which designer can determine operation sequences even if they have a little experience in process planning and die design for axisymmetric products. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. The system can provide a flexible process based on either the reduction in the number of forming sequences by combining the possible two processes in sequence, or the reduction of deviation of the distribution on the level of the required forming loads by controlling the forming ratios. Especially in die design module optimal design technique and horizontal split of die insert were investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of multi-former die set. Results obtained, using the modules, enable the design and manufacture of a die set for a multi-former to be more efficiently performed.

    A spectral analysis and numerical simulation are employed to assess the effects of the stylus tip radius on measuring surface profiles. Original profiles with fractal spectral densities are generated and then are numerically traced with circular tipped stylus. Instead of their spectral densities, the accumulative power spectrums of traced profiles are analyzed. It is shown that the minimum wavelength of traced profile relates directly to the radius r of the stylus tip and the root-mean-square (rms) roughness ${\sigma}_o$ of original profile. From this accumulation spectral analysis, a formula is developed to estimate the minimum wavelength of traced profile. By using the concept of the minimum wavelength, an appropriate stylus tip radius can be chosen for the given rms roughness ${\sigma}_o$ of the profile.

    Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) formed by alkanethiol adsorption to thin metal film are widely being investigated for applications as coating layer for anti-stiction or friction reduction and in fabrication of micro structure of molecules and bio molecules. Recently, there have been many researches on micro patterning using the advantages of very thin thickness and etching resistance of Self-Assembled Monolayers in selective etching of thin metal film. In this report, we present the several machining method to form the nanoscale structure by Mask-Less laser patterning using alknanethiolate Self-Assembled Monolayers such as thin metal film etching and heterogeneous SAM structure formation.

    Cutting by a high speed laser cutting machine is one of most effective technologies to improve productivity. This paper has presented the cutting characteristics and optimal cutting conditions in a high speed feeding type laser cutting machine by using Tacuchi method in the design of experiment. An L9(34) orthogonal array is adopted to study the effect of adjustment parameters. The adjustment parameters consist of cutting speed, laser power, laser output duty and assistant gas pressure. The surface roughness of sheet metal is regarded as a quality feature. Analysis of variance is performed in order to evaluate the effect of adjustment parameters on the quality feature of laser cutting process.

    In this paper, the effect of open crack on the dynamic behavior of simply supported Timoshenko beam with a moving mass was studied. The influences of the depth and the position of the crack on the beam were studied on the dynamic behavior of the simply supported beam system by numerical methods. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equation. The crack section is represented by a local flexibility matrix connecting two undamaged beam segments. The crack is modeled as a rotational spring. This flexibility matrix defines the relationship between the displacements and forces on the crack section and is derived by applying fundamental fracture mechanics theory. As the depth of the crack increases, the mid-span deflection of the Timoshenko beam with a moving mass is increased.

    Recently, there has been an increasing demand for computer-vision-based inspection and/or measurement system as a part of factory automation equipment. In general, it is almost impossible to check the fault of all parts, coming from part-feeding system, with only manual inspection because of time limitation. Therefore, most of manual inspection is applied to specific samples, not all coming parts, and manual inspection neither guarantee consistent measuring accuracy nor decrease working time. Thus, in order to improve the measuring speed and accuracy of the inspection, a computer-aided measuring and analysis method is highly needed. In this paper, a computer-vision-based pipe inspection system is proposed, where the front and side-view profiles of three different kinds of pipes, coming from a forming line, are acquired by computer vision. And the edge detection is processed by using Laplace operator. To reduce the vision processing time, modified Hough transform is used with clustering method for straight line detection. And the center points and diameters of inner and outer circle are found to determine eccentricity of the parts. Also, an inspection system has been built so that the data and images of faulted parts are stored as files and transferred to the server.

    In this paper, we develop anti-sway control in proposed techniques for an ATC system. The developed algorithm is to build the optimal path of container motion and to calculate an anti-collision path for collision avoidance in its movement to the finial coordinate. Moreover, in order to show the effectiveness in this research, we compared NNP PID controller to be tuning parameters of controller using NN with 2-DOF PID controller. The experimental results jar an ATC simulator show that the proposed control scheme guarantees performances, trolley position, sway angle, and settling time in NNP PID controller than other controller. As a result, the application of NNP PID controller is analyzed to have robustness about disturbance which is wind of fixed pattern in the yard.

    This paper presents a method for deposition an individual carbon nanotube (CNT). The alignment of a single CNT is very useful to perform studies related to applications in FET (Field Emitted Transistor), SET (Single Electron Transistor) and to make chemical sensor as well as bio sensors. In this study, we developed the deposition method of a CNT individualized in a solution. Using the electrokinetic method, we found the optimum conditions to assemble the nanotube and discussed about plausible explanation for the assembling mechanism. These results will be available to use for making the CNT sensor device.

    An active contour model has been used to detect the edges in a still image. In order to apply the active contour model to edge detection, the energy function which consists of internal, external and image energies should be defined. After defining the energy function, the edge of an object is detected through minimization of the value of the energy function. In this paper, the modified internal energy function is proposed to improve the convergence of the energy function when the active contour model is applied to the tracking of deformable objects using the greedy algorithm. In order to show the performance of the proposed energy function, experiments were carried out for the still and animated images.

    A computer code was developed to simulate both the thermal stresses introduced during the post-filling stage and the in-plane deformation after ejection process by finite element method based on the plane stress theory. The computer simulation was applied to the mold design of a 2 inch light guide plate (LGP) for thin film transistor (TFT)-liquid crystal displays (LCD). With injection molding experiments based on the design of experiments (DOE) technique, the influences of the processing conditions in injection molding on brightness and uniformity of the LGP were investigated, and the optimal processing parameters were selected to increase the brightness and uniformity. The verification experiment showed that the brightness and uniformity of the LGP were increased dramatically under the selected optimal processing conditions.

    The research on surface modification technology has been advanced to improve the properties of engineering materials. Ion implantation is a novel surface modification technology that enhances the mechanical, chemical and electrical properties of substrate's surface using accelerated ions. In this research, nitrogen ions were implanted into AC7A aluminum substrates which would be used as molds for rubber molding. The composition of nitrogenion implanted aluminum and distribution of nitrogen ions were analyzed by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). To analyze the modified surface, properties such as hardness, friction coefficient, wear resistance, contact angle, and surface roughness were measured. Hardness of ion implanted specimen was higher than that of untreated specimen. Friction coefficient was reduced, and wear resistance was improved. From the experimental results, it can be expected that implantation of nitrogen ions enhances the mechanical properties of aluminum mold.

    The learning control develops controllers that learn to improve their performance at executing a given task, based on experience performing this specific task. In a previous work, the authors presented an iterative precision of linear decentralized learning control based on p-integrated learning method for the vertical dynamic multiple systems. This paper develops an indirect decentralized learning control based on adaptive control method. The original motivation of the learning control field was learning in robots doing repetitive tasks such as an assembly line works. This paper starts with decentralized discrete time systems, and progresses to the robot application, modeling the robot as a time varying linear system in the neighborhood of the nominal trajectory, and using the usual robot controllers that are decentralized, treating each link as if it is independent of any coupling with other links. Some techniques will show up in the numerical simulation for vertical dynamic robot. The methods of learning system are shown for the iterative precision of each link.
