A numerical study for performance analysis of a crossflow-type forced draft cooling tower has been performed based on the finite volume method with non-orthogonal body fitted, and non-staggered grid system. For solving the coupling problem between water and air, air enthalpy, moisture fraction, water enthalpy, and water mass balance equations are solved with Navier-Stoke's equations simultaneously. For the effect of turbulence, the standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model is implied in this analysis. The predicted result of the present analysis is compared with the experimental data and the commercial software result to validate the present study. The predicted results show good agreement with the experimental data and the commercial software result. To investigate the influence of the cooling tower design parameters such as approach, range and wet bulb temperature, parametric studies are also performed.

The frequency response characteristics of a condenser were numerically studied for the control of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The important parameters, such as the refrigerant flow rate, refrigerant temperature, air velocity, and air temperature at the condenser inlet, were analyzed. Superheated vapor, two phase, and subcooled liquid domain in condenser can be described by using the energy balance equation and the mass balance equation in refrigerant and tube wall, the basic equation for describing the dynamic characteristics of condenser can be derived. The transfer function for describing dynamic response of the condenser to disturbances can be obtained from using linearizations and Laplace transformations of the equation. From this transfer function, analytical investigation which affects the frequency responses of condenser has been made. Block diagrams were made based on the analytic transfer function; dynamic responses were evaluated in Bode diagrams on the frequency response. Through this study, it became possible that the information about the dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser is offered. The results may be used for determining the optimum design parameters in actual components and entire systems. Also, the mathematical models, frequency response may be used to help understanding, evaluate optimum design parameters, design control systems and determine on setting the best controller for the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems.

A series of tests were performed to verify the transient characteristics of heat pump in heating and cooling mode when operating speed was varied over the 30 to 102Hz. One of the major issues that has not been addressed so far is transient characteristics during speed modulation. The model for cycle simulation has been developed to predict the cycle performance under conditions of decreasing drive frequency and the results of the theoretical study were compared with the results of the experimental study. The simulated results were in good agreement with the experimental result within 10%. The transient cycle migration of the liquid state refrigerant causes significant dynamic change in system. Thus, the migration of refrigerant was the most important factor whenever do experimental results analysis or develop simulation model.

The capillary tube performance for R-407C is experimentally investigated. The experimental setup is a real vapor-compression refrigerating system. Mass flow rate is measured for various diameter and length while inlet pressure and degree of subcooling are changed. These data are compared with the results of a numerical model. The mass flow rate of the numerical model is about 14% less than the measured mass flow rate. It is found that mass flow rate and length for R-407C are less than those for R-22 under the same condition. Based on this experimental study and the numerical model, a set of design charts for capillary tube of R-407C is proposed.

The effects of an inserted coil on flow . patterns and heat transfer performance for a horizontal rotating heat pipe have been studied experimentally. Especially, the present study is to see an internally inserted helical coil inside a RHP would lead to the same kind of results as internal fins. Visualization test conducted for an acryl tube, charged water with at a volumetric rate of 20%. When the flow kept pool regime at a low rpm(less than 1,000rpm), the movement of coil forced the water to flow in axial direction. But this pumping effect of coil disappeared, when the pool regime changed to annular one which could be created by increasing rpm. The pumping effects for RHP with an inserted coil resulted in the enhancement in both condensation heat transfer coefficient and heat transport limitation, as obtained in case of using internal fins. But all these effects became negligible in the range of higher rpm(above 1,000-1,200) with the transition of flow regime to annular flow.

Environmental control facilities are used to simulate an environment or combination of environments under which many kinds of research and tests can be performed. The design of the control system to maintain desired environmental conditions is essential to proper operation of the facility. A simulation model of the facility has been developed by analyzing each component of the system thermodynamically. with necessary properties and heat transfer relations. Using the system simulation model, the required characteristics of the control system has been investigated. PI controller is considered as the most probable controller for this kind of the facility, and electric heater power is shown as the proper manipulated variable for temperature control.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and characterize the correlation of the thermal comfort sensation with physiological responses for men in winter indoor environment. A number of experiments were conducted under twenty different environmental conditions with college male students. Clinical information on each participant was reported in terms of electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG) and self-centered evaluation. The comfort zone in winter is found, throughout the study, at Standard New Effective Temperature (SET$T^+$) of 25.2$^{\circ}C$, Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) between 0.27 and 0.62, and Thermal Sensation Vote (TSV) in the range of -0.76 and 0.36. The largest difference in skin temperature is measured at the calf area with respect to air temperature changes. Skin sensitivity to environment temperature is explained as calf, head, chest and abdomen in descending order. Change in heat rate is analyzed to be in parallel with that of SET$T^+$.
