Background: This study was aimed at investigating the type of work of dental hygienists and identifying factors affecting the subjective health status according to hazardous risk factors in the working environment. Methods: From May 15 to 31, 2019, we surveyed 411 dental hygienists working at dental hospitals in the metropolitan area. SPSS 25.0 was used to perform the frequency analysis, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Regarding factors related to the degree of exposure to hazardous risk factors in the work environment and subjective health status, the more exposed the ergonomic (p<0.05) and psychological (p< 0.001)factors, the worse is the subjective health status. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the working environment should be improved for dental hygienists such that they can perform their duties in a safe environment.

Background: This study was aimed at investigating the perception of the requirement of measuring the periodontal pocket depth of the dental hygiene students in the mock national board examination. Methods: SPSS 25.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics) was used to perform the independent t-test for the recognition level of dental hygiene students in the interdisciplinary practical national board examination. A p-value < 0.05 was set to indicate statistical significance. Results: Participants showed a high recognition level for the requirement of measuring the periodontal pocket depth without any difference among disciplines. When periodontal pocket depth measurement was included in the national board examination, the educational and clinical work of dental hygienists was expected to be unified, and the professionalism of dental hygienists was expected to be strengthened. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the feasibility of introducing periodontal pocket depth measurement in the practical national board examination for dental hygienists should be reviewed by a group of experts.

Background: This study was aimed at investigating factors influencing the selection of dental institutions for implant surgery among young adults (age: 20-64 years) and identifying differences in these factors according to general characteristics. Methods: We conducted an internet survey for approximately 2 months, from April to July 2022, and analyzed data from a total of 128 people. Dental institution selection factors included three items of convenience of transportation, five items of physical environment, three items of image of institution, five items of image of dental staff, five items of dental service, and four items of basic dental elements. The importance score for each item was investigated on a five-point scale. Results: The importance score for each dental institution selection factor was the highest for dental service (4.42 points), followed by basic dental element (4.00 points), physical environment (3.89 points), image of institution (3.81 points), convenience of transportation (3.76 points), and image of dental staff (2.78 points). The importance score for each item was the highest for dentists' technique, followed by cleanliness, reliability, and dentists' attitude. Women had higher average scores for all factors compared to men, with statistical significance in scores for convenience of transportation, physical environment, image of institution, dental service, and basic dental elements (p< 0.05). Conclusion: To attract patients seeking implants to a dental institution, attention should be paid to the patients' institution selection factors. In addition, the environment of a dental institution should be created in such a way that it favors patients' selection factors.

Background: This study was aimed at investigating the perception of social network service (SNS) users regarding dental office visits and determining the proportion of dental SNS users among general SNS users. Methods: We surveyed 177 adults using SNSs. Dental SNS characteristics were classified into information provision, interaction, recency, reliability, and interest, and the recognition level of each area was surveyed on a 5-point scale. The total number of items was 17, including three information provision, three interaction, four recency, four reliability, and three interest items. Results: Among the five domains, the recognition level was the highest for reliability (3.51 points) and the lowest for interest (2.94 points). Among the 17 items, the recognition level was the highest for "Educational information provided by dental SNS is valuable" at 3.60 points, "Dental SNS educational video is useful for information sharing and dental knowledge improvement" at 3.53 points, and "The perceived educational information of dental SNS is reliable" at 3.51 points. Participants in their 20s and 30s had higher scores for being up-to-date (3.33 and 2.88 points, respectively) and reliability (3.59 and 3.09 points, respectively) than those in their 40s or older. The recognition level of all areas of dental SNS characteristics was significantly higher for experienced dental SNS users than for nonexperienced ones. Conclusions: The results of this study suggested that dental institutions should consider ways to utilize SNS for patient management and education and that dental SNS-related contents should contain educational and reliable information to help SNS users manage their oral health.

Background: This study was aimed at obtaining basic data necessary to develop alternatives to improve the oral health-related quality of life of the elderly by investigating dry mouth and oral health-related quality of life of patients visiting the N Dental Clinic in Jeollanam-do. Methods: From November 2021 to September 2022, data were collected using a self-report survey of adults aged 50 years or older. Of the 300 questionnaires collected, 280 had insufficient data because of missing entries. Results: Analyzing the satisfaction level of oral health-related quality of life according to the participants' medical use and subjective oral health recognition, "what do you think your oral health is like" showed significant differences (p< 0.001). Dry mouth and satisfaction were positively correlated with the oral health-related quality of life (β=0.42, p= 0.00). Factors affecting the quality of life related to oral health were "total score of oral dryness" (β= 0.395) and "what do you think your oral health is like" (β=0.224). Conclusion: The results of this study suggested that systematic intervention, such as oral health programs, suitable for age may improve the oral health-related quality of life.

Background: This study was aimed at improving the satisfaction of patients with implants placed using an implant surgical guide by analyzing patient satisfaction with the implant procedure carried out using the guide . Methods: We extracted convenient samples from patients with implants who had visited dental hospitals and clinics in Mokpo from March 2 to June 30, 2022. We used 228 copies of the self-report survey for analyses. Results: All items of implant satisfaction were positively correlated with the use of an implant surgical guide. Conclusions:The results of this study showed that implant satisfaction can be increased with the use of implant surgical guides.

Background: This study was aimed at surveying the health science students' interest, demand, and awareness of virtual reality (VR) devices for learning to accumulate data necessary to develop and implement a curriculum with VR devices. Methods: We investigated the perception of health science students regarding VR device application and utilization. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 25.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics). Frequency and descriptive analyses were performed for the perception level of VR device use for university education. An independent twosamples t-test was performed to statistically analyze the perception level according to the VR device experience. A p-value < 0.05 was set to indicate statistical significance. Results: To the question "Do you wish to use VR devices for educational purposes?," 73% of the participants answered "yes." To the question "Do you think VR is necessary for the course curriculum?," over 65% answered "yes." Conclusion: In this study, health science students reported a great need for VR devices for education. VR-based classroom curriculum is expected to improve students' concentration, interest, and motivation.

Background: This study was aimed at reducing depression and improving the quality of life and oral health of the elderly Koreans by elucidating the effect of depression on their life quality and oral health. Methods: Original data from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Survey (2019) were analyzed and implemented. The elderly (age≥65years) Koreans were enrolled. The oral health status was determined using the Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth (DMFT) index and subjective self-report. The quality of life was quantified as the sum of score of each item in the Euro Qol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) and Health-related Quality of Life Instrument with 8 Items (HINT-8). The t-test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were performed to statistically compare the quality of life, oral health status, and oral health status according to the depression status. Results: EQ-5D and HINT-8 scores differed significantly with the history of depression, current depression, stress perception, depression for 2 weeks, and annual suicidal intention (p≤0.05). The DMFT index score differed significantly with the depression diagnosis and depression for 2 weeks (p≤0.05). EQ-5D, HINT-8, and DMFT index differed significantly with all oral health behavior variables (p≤ 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study could serve as a basis to formulate oral health programs for the elderly to reduce depression and improve the quality of life.

Background: This study was aimed at determining the relationship of the Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness (DISC) personality type with the major satisfactions and job preferences of dental hygiene and technician students. Methods: We enrolled 264 dental hygiene and technician students from a junior college in Chungcheong-do. A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the DISC behavior type, major satisfaction level, and job preference of the participants. Statistical analyses were performed with the independent-samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and multiple regression. Results: Dental technician students had higher major satisfaction (p< .001) and preferred jobs with potential for growth (p= .020) or matching their vocation and interests (p= .013) compared to dental hygiene students. Factors influencing major satisfaction were grade (β= .160, p= .008) and a social personality type (β= .146, p= .070). Factors influencing preference for jobs with high growth potential were the personality type (β= .236, p= .001), grades (β= .157, p= .002), and major satisfaction (β= .429, p< .001). The conscientiousness personality type was conducive to preferencefor jobs with high growth potential. The steadiness personality type was conducive to preference for jobs aligned with vocation and interest (β= .249, p= .004). The conscientiousness personality type (β= .137, p= .041) and high major satisfaction (β= .193, p= .003) were conducive to preference for jobs with a satisfactory working environment. Conclusion: The results of this study could serve as a basis for customized career counseling and education programs according to personality types.

Background: Due to the declining number of students preparing for university entrance exams , the quota of universities has been decreasing continuously. This situation became increasingly diverse as new media used online, mobile, and PR tools to continuously invite students. This study is aimed at offering the helpful data to plan an effective PR strategy by analyzing the correlation between the major selection and satisfaction of the department's social media usage among freshmen majoring in dental hygiene. Methods: The collected data from the self-reported survey with freshmen were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 program. The survey items were motive to select the major, social media platform that subjects used, reasons to use the media, time to visit the department's social media platform, and satisfaction level on the department's social media platform, using a 5-point Likert Scale. Results: The reasons for choosing a major were given by 32.2% and 15.9% respondents, respectively, as the vision after graduation and practice facilities. 39.9% and 31.4% used Instagram and YouTube for social media platforms, respectively, for using social media platform; 26.9% and 26.3% visited the department's social media before and after entering the university, respectively; 46.4% and 24.9% used Instagram and YouTube for department social media; and they generally satisfied with the contents of the department's social media. 40.9% of them said that information from the department's social media was useful. 33.8% of them said the information from the department's social media exceeded their expectations. 46.8% of them answered that the department's social media made the department's image positive. 33.4% got interested in the major more due to the department's social media. According to 32.1% of respondents, the department's social media was helpful in deciding on a major. With 35.4%, a positive correlation was discovered between the department's practice facilities and satisfaction on the department's social media. Conclusion: It is thought that the department's social media should try continuously by uploading the contents to meet the users' needs on a regular basis and seeking the plans to be able to collect various opinions using surveys through the related social media so that students can select the major and, moreover, lead the positive direction to adapt the university life under the unfamiliar environment after admission.

Background: A study was conducted to check the occupational personality competency status of students enrolled in the three-year dental hygiene department and to understand the contents of vocational personality education to be prepared according to these results. Methods: For 240 students enrolled in the Department of Dental Hygiene in Area, Daegu, the College Student Occupational Personality Scale (OPSU) was administered. Results: The higher the major satisfaction (F=10.589, p<0.000) and the higher the major performance (F=3.704, p<0.01), the higher the vocational personality competency. The average occupational personality competency for job adaptation was 3.96±0.47 points (out of 5 points). As for the average for each sub-area, consideration was the highest at 4.51±0.42, and confidence was the lowest at 3.54±0.84. Among professional personality competencies, the average of each sub-area showed the highest positive correlation in the order of positivity (r=0.835, p<0.00), reliability (r=0.769, p<0.00), and community consciousness (r=0.767, p<0.00), and consideration (r=0.696, p<0.00) showed the lowest correlation. Conclusions: Personalized career and employment education should be provided in consideration of the individual occupational personality level of dental hygiene students considering the characteristics of the health and medical fields, and individual counseling should be provided in areas that are insufficient or supplemented. In addition, dental hygiene ethics education is necessary for the development of vocational personality competencies in the dental hygiene curriculum, and universities should spare no support for completing vocational personality education programs in preparation for the future society by using comparative programs.

Background: This study aimed to create and present content that can be used in the dental hygiene ethics process to help dental hygiene students develop desirable work ethics and ethical values. Methods: In order to operate the dental hygiene ethics course in all academic systems, one three-year dental hygiene professor and one four-year dental hygiene professor participated in setting core competencies and learning goals for the dental hygiene ethics course. The class consisted of two credits, two hours of theoretical classes, and class activity sheets developed according to the learning contents and learning topics for each week that can be operated for 15 weeks. Results: The contents of the dental hygiene ethics subject were developed to be conducted as theoretical education and case-oriented discussion classes. The 15-week class consisted of a theory lecture on dental hygiene work ethics (eight weeks), discussions and presentations for ethical decisions based on actual cases related to dental hygiene ethics (four weeks), and the design and presentation of individual professional mission statements and codes of conduct (three weeks). The class data for each week consisted of four stages: "Learning goal-thinking," "open-thinking," "learning content-thinking," and "according to learning goal." Conclusions: In order to establish desirable workplace ethics and ethical values for dental hygiene students, it is necessary to approach education in a way that values understanding and application of dental hygiene practices, legal and ethical standards, ethical decision-making models, and ethical principles.

Background: The aim of this study was to identify the bibliographic characteristics and research trends of the literature published on the profession of dental hygiene to provide basic data for research, education, and intervention program development for the establishment of healthy professionalism among dental hygienists and dental hygienist students. Methods: A literature search was conducted through four databases. They were looked up using the terms "dental hygiene" and "professional." Finally, 46 research papers that meet the selection criteria were selected for analysis. Results: From 2004 to 2022, 46 articles were published. Except for key words related to subjects and tools, key words ranked at the top were job satisfaction, self-esteem, self-leadership, and stress. Five tools of professionalism-professional self-concept, professional intuition, professional identity, and a professional values scale -were used in the study. Conclusion: Considering the social perception of dental hygienists as professionals and the reality of dental hygiene that is carrying out the process of professionalization, efforts are needed to identify and promote beliefs and attitudes toward professionals such as professionalism and professional identity.

Background: The purpose of this study was to analyze the association between the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and Quality of Life (QoL) between urban and rural residents in Koreausing data from the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). Methods: This study was analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 program (IBM SPSS Statistics), and a t-test was performed for difference between GOHAI and QoL, and a multiple regression analysis was used for association between the independent and dependent variables with confounding variables corrected. The statistical significance was p<0.05. Results: Urban residents' average QoL was statistically significantly higher rural residents'(Table 1, p>0.05). For subjects under the age of 65, the QoL increased by 0.30 points for urban residents and 0.39 points for rural residents according to GOHAI increased by one unit (Table 2, p>0.05). Also, for subjects aged 65 years or older, the QoL increased by 0.42 points for urban residents and 0.61 points for rural residents according to the GOHAI, increasing by one unit (Table 3, p>0.05). Conclusion: Through the results of this study, the quality of life of rural residents was lower than that of urban residents. The GOHAI had a stronger impact on QoL among rural residents than in urban areas. In order to address the disparity in QoL between urban and rural residents, it was believed that policies aimed at improving oral health for rural residents should b etaken in to account.

Background: By regulating the factors that contribute to oral diseases in a healthy way, oral health can be maintained and prevented. Methods: The general characteristics, PHP index, oral health behavior, and clinical periodontal index of each group were calculated by frequency analysis, and a cross-analysis (χ2 test) was conducted to assess the homogeneity of the general characteristics, oral health behavior, and clinical periodontal index of the study subjects. An Oral bacteriological examination was performed by gargling with saliva. Results: The expert periodontal prevention group showed a decrease in the copy number of periodontal disease causative bacteria, and A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythus, andT. denticolashowed a significant difference before and after treatment (p=0.021). In the periodontal treatment group, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythus, andT. denticolaall showed a decrease in copy number, but there was no significant difference. Conclusions: This study showed professional periodontal prevention management had some effect on periodontal bacterial reduction.

Background: This study was conducted to investigate the actual status of dental hygienists' CPR-related educational experiences and the actual status of dental hygienists' CPR license retention, and to investigate the differences and correlations among CPR-related knowledge, attitudes, and performance abilities. Methods: An online self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 200 dental hygienists nationwide from May 6 to 29, 2019. The data regarding the sociodemographic characteristics, CPR-related knowledge, attitudes, and performance abilities were collected and analyzed using the chi-square test, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and the Pearson correlation coefficient using IBM SPSS Statistics version 20.0. Results: Dental hygienists with CPR-related education experience showed high levels of knowledge in the area. Dental hygienists with CPR-related education experiences and dental hygienists with CPR licenses showed high CPR performance abilities. Positive correlations are observed among CPR-related knowledge, attitude, and performance abilities. Conclusion: As CPR-related education has been found to be of value and importance to dental hygienists, systematic educational programs as well as support for regular education will need to be implemented.
