Abstract

The recent studies on air movement have been focusing on positive aspects of indoor air movement on occupants' thermal comfort. Especially the thermal comfort regarding elevated air velocity in warm environment has been a hot topic of many papers. The purpose of this study was to define thermally comfortable operating conditions of a stand fan widely used in Korea. Measurement and questionnaire were conducted targeting the group of seated men and women group in their 20's. Airflow measurement has been carried out at a height of 0.6 m from the floor limiting to the case of air movement from the left side of the occupants. As a result, the comfort zone appears in $-1.2{\leq}PMV{\leq}+0.5$, in which thermal sensation is extended to the lower side than one($-0.5{\leq}PMV{\leq}+0.5$) in uniform air velocity suggested by ASHRAE Standard 55. Based on the survey from the group of men and women group in their 20's, this study suggested thermally comfortable operating conditions of the stand fan which could be applicable to the cooling strategy in warm environment such as spring, summer, and fall.
