A Study on Visceral Design Based on the Psychological Mechanisms Evolved by Natural Selection

자연선택에 의해 진화된 심리 기제에 기초한 본능적 디자인 연구

Background Evolutionary psychology studies the psychological mechanisms evolved by natural selection, which still affect our behavior and mind. If designers can understand and apply them to product or service design, they can create visceral designs which are attractive on an instinctual level. Method This paper selected three findings in evolutionary psychology which can be applied to product or service design and suggested three visceral designs. Results ‘Young male syndrome’ can explain why young males are prone to engage in risky forms of aggregation. This paper suggested a product which can remedy the aggregation, which is a recycling bin for compressing and collecting aluminum cans discarded in the streets. A wooden mortar was used for compressing cans to attract the attention of passersby and lead them to participate in recycling. The recycling bin was installed on a street in Insadong and one in Daehakro and participants' behavior was recorded. The rate of men’s participation was twice as high as that of women’s. ‘Paternity uncertainty’ can explain the situation of less parental care in males than in females. Mothers made the evolved psychological mechanism of saying their children take after the father to lead the father to invest in more parental care. This paper suggested a smartphone application, called ‘The child’s toes take after the father's’, which shows the resemblance between a father and a child. A mother observes the father’s and child’s habitual behavior, takes pictures, and makes an album for comparing the two pictures on a screen and showing the resemblance between them. Evidence of the mother’s dedication to parental care was found in many studies of evolutionary psychology. However, the dedication, which mothers created, conversely, leads working moms to feel a sense of guilt because they found it difficult to invest their time and effort in parental care. This paper suggested a product for alleviating the mother’s guilt which involves recording the mother’s voice in a greeting card covered with a non-woven fabric on which the mother’s picture was printed. Conclusion Evolutionary psychology provides useful clues for visceral design. It can present designers with new problems to be solved or provide psychological mechanisms which help them solve the problems they are faced with. If designers can understand the clues, they can make visceral designs which are attractive on an instinctual level.

연구배경 진화심리학은 자연선택에 의해 진화된 심리적 기제를 연구하는 학문이다. 오랜 기간 동안 진화하면서 생존에 필요한 것들이 자연선택 되는 과정에서 형성된 심리적 특성이 오늘날 우리의 마음과 행동에도 영향을 주기 때문에, 이를 잘 이해하고 디자인에 응용한다면 본능적으로 끌리는 제품이나 서비스를 디자인할 수 있을 것이다. 연구방법 본 논문은 진화심리학 이론 중에서 본능적 디자인에 실마리를 제공하는 세 가지 이론을 선택해서 디자인한 사례를 보여준다. 연구결과 ‘젊은 남자 증후군’은 남자들이 남 앞에서 왜 공격성을 보이는지를 설명해 준다. 본 연구는 이와 같은 남자들의 공격성을 이용해서 길에서 버려지는 알루미늄 캔을 압축해서 분리수거하는 도구를 디자인하였다. 참여자들의 호기심을 자극해서 캔 압축에 참여하도록 유도하기 위해서 절구를 이용해서 캔을 압축하는 도구를 디자인하였다. 인사동과 대학로 거리에 절구를 설치하고 관찰한 결과 남자의 참여율이 여자의 참여율 보다 두 배 이상 높았다. ‘부성 불확실성’은 아버지가 자식의 양육에 적극적으로 참여하지 않는 이유를 설명해 준다. 어머니는 자식이 아버지를 닮았다고 이야기 하는 것으로 아버지가 자식 양육에 적극적으로 참여하도록 유도하려는 심리적 기제를 진화시켰다. 이 특성을 이용해서 아이와 아버지의 닮은 모습을 어머니가 사진으로 찍어서 닮은 모습을 한 화면에서 비교할 수 있도록 앨범을 제작할 수 있는 스마트폰 앱을 디자인하였다. 어머니의 자식 양육에 대한 헌신적인 노력은 많은 진화심리학 연구에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 그러나 어머니들이 진화시킨 자식 양육을 위한 헌신은 워킹 맘에게 자식에 대한 죄책감을 느끼게 한다. 워킹 맘이 가지는 자식에 대한 죄책감을 줄여주기 위해서 엄마의 목소리를 녹음했다가 아이에게 들려줄 수 있는 제품을 제안하였다. 음성 녹음 칩을 가지고 있는 축하 카드를 이용해서 엄마의 목소리를 녹음하고, 만들어진 카드를 엄마 얼굴이 인쇄된 천으로 감쌌다. 결론 진화심리학이 본능적 디자인에 제공하는 실마리는 디자이너가 해결해야 할 중요한 문제를 제시할 수도 있고, 문제를 해결하는 데 도움을 주는 심리 특성일 수도 있다. 디자이너가 진화심리학이 제공하는 실마리를 잘 이해한다면 본능적으로 끌리는 제품을 디자인할 수 있을 것이다.
