Abstract

This paper presents a computational method that can be used as a framework for design to enhance morphological understanding for the maximization of the environmental performance. The environmental performance including energy-saving and eco-friendly function is closely related to spatial resolution determined by building arrangement and shape. The fundamental idea suggested in this research is that if we could implement the elaborate system that enables us to optimize the shape and arrangement of the buildings by incorporating the performance objectives, we could develop passive house complex that has highly predictable energy-saving and eco-friendly performance attributes. To achieve this, we produced the assessment results for the performance in energy-saving by applying the optimal design method to a case study classified into three types (Flat-type, L-tower-type, Y-tower-type). Daylight performance of buildings was visualized and simulated with the software Autodesk "ECOTECT". The energy performance assessment for a year-change was conducted to divide two loads - heating and cooling - by the thermal analysis in ECOTECT. The paper shows visually how daylight level and energy efficiency are different according the characteristics of building shape. The paper ends with a discussion of how the building shape with comfort and low-energy environment could be designed using simulation tools that are available today.
