자작나무 수피를 일반적으로 백화피라하며 한방에서는 이뇨ㆍ진통ㆍ해열에 쓰이고 있다. 이 수피의 화학성분이 주로 Betulin으로 되어 있다는 보고에 따라 한국산 자작나무 수피로부터 Betulin과 그 관련화합물을 단리동정하여 항산화작용, 항HIV성을 알아내기 위하여 본 연구를 실시하였다. 실험 결과 betulin의 수율이 6.9%로 우리나라에서는 처음으로 다량 단리하였으며, 에틸아세트 용성에서 3,4-dihydrobenzoic acid룰 단리하였다. 이후 betulin 관련 유도체를 합성제조하여 각종 실험 시료로써 활용하고자 한다.
