Liquid-phase catalytic degradation of waste high-density polyethylene (HDPE) over ZSM-5 (powder type (PW)) and ZSM-5+binder (granule type (GR)) has been investigated with a stirred semi-batch operation at 400°C. Two ZSM-5 catalysts with a different crystal size were synthesized and also each ZSM-5 (25%) Catalyst was mixed with a same binder (kaolin: silica sol: alumina = 55%:10%:10%). The performance of prepared catalysts that has different physicochemical properties was discussed with the cumulative amount distribution, molecular weight distribution and also paraffin, olefin, naphthene and aromatic (PONA) distribution in liquid product. These liquid product quality and distributions were changed depending on the physicochemical properties of the catalyst. Moreover, the characteristic of ZSM-5 in the catalyst was strongly influenced on the activity and PONA distribution in liquid product.
The adsorption equilibrium data for the binary gas mixture system from the pure gas adsorption data of carbon dioxide and ethylene on ZSM-5 prepared were predicted. The binary gas mixture adsorption data have been examined against predicted values by two models-the vacancy solution model(VSM) and the statistical thermodynamic model(STM), using parameters obtained from the single component isotherm. The binary gas mixture data for the carbon dioxide-ethylene system were obtained for cation exchanged forms of ZSM-5 for the gas phase carbon dioxide mole fraction of 0.752 at $37^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The experimental adsorption phase diagrams were obtained for carbon dioxide-ethylene on sodium form ZSM-5 synthesized. The single component adsorption isotherms for carbon dioxide and ethylene were also obtained for this zeolite. The single component data were used to obtain parameters derived in two models. These parameters were, in turn, used to predict the binary mixture isotherms for this zeolite. Both the vacancy solution and the statistical thermodynamic models give satisfactory predictions of adsorption phase diagrams for the binary gas mixtures of carbon dioxide and ethylene on sodium exchanged ZSM-5. Also the correlation between the experimental data and the predicted values is generally in good agreement. The system appears to show ideal behavior with a relatively constant separation factor. The slight increase in adsorption capacity with an increase in ionic radius is due, in part, to the higher polarizability associated with larger cations.
A hydrocarbon trap (HT) plays an important role of controlling vehicle emissions in the so-called cold emission period by holding hydrocarbons until three way catalysts (TWCs) are thermally activated. In this study, we have investigated the adsorption characteristics of cation (H, La, K, and Ag)-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolites for hydrocarbons (propylene, n-butane, and toluene) by DFT (density functional theory)-based computational chemistry. Cation exchange is to improve the hydrothermal stability of zeolites and their adsorption capacity, thereby rendering cation-exchanged zeolites promising materials for HT. The idea of cluster approximation makes the calculation of adsorption energies superbly efficient in computation. The results showed that Ag-exchanged ZSM-5 would be the best for the adsorption of all three adsorbates, without often encountered Ag oxidation in experiments. Besides, the hydrothermal stability of La-exchanged ZSM-5 was confirmed from the change of geometrical parameters by cation exchange, and it showed good adsorption capacity for propylene and toluene. Hydrogen-exchanged ZSM-5 was also good for hydrogen adsorption, but had poor hydrothermal stability.
Pentasil zeolites, including ZSM-5, ZSM-8, ZSM-11 and silicalites, were synthesized using various organic cations. Synthesis run was carried out in a Parr pressure reactor of $2{\ell}$ capacity and a self-constructed reactor with a magnetic stirring system. The reactant materials used are colloidal silica (Snowtex), sodium aluminate, sodium chloride, TEA, TPA, TBA, Choline and water. The composition of starting materials and the reaction temperature were found to be important factors for the synthesis of uniform pentasil zeolites.

Ga-MFI was synthesized by a hydrothermal process at atmospheric pressure. The effect of mole ratios of reactants on crystallization was also investigated thoroughly. The characteristics of synthesized Ga-MFI was compared with ZSM-5. The synthesis of Ga-MFI was carried out with five different mole-compositions of $\underline{a}SiO_2-\underline{b}Ga_2O_3-\underline{c}Na_2O-\underline{d}TPA_2o-\underline{e}H_2O$. The synthesized Ga-MFI and ZSM-5 were characterized by XRD and FT-IR. The inorganic cation ($Na^+$) and water played an important role in crystallinity and the organic cation ($TPA^+$) as a template played a great influence on yields. With the increase in the amount of $Ga^{3+}$, crystallization time was increased. With a fixed $SiO_2/Ga_2O_3$ ratio of 400, the optimum reaction condition was obtained at $H_2O/SiO_2$=30${\sim}$35, $Na_2O/SiO_2$=0.5${\sim}$0.6, and $TPA_2O/Na_2O$=1${\sim}$1.25. In these cases, the crystallinity and yield were more than 95% and 90%, respectively. By comparing IR spectrum of Ga-MFI with those of ZSM-5 and silicalite, it was found that Ga-MFI showed a unique peak at 970 $cm^{-1}$, which may be used to identify Ga-MFI from ZSM-5 and silicalite.
It was realized that the nucleation rate in the synthesis of M-ZSM-5 using various alkali cations such as $Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and $Cs^+$ at low temperature and atmospheric pressure was decreased in the order of $Na^+>K^+>Li^+>Cs^+$. Unlike conventional synthesis method at high temperature and pressure, the results showed that at low temperature and atmospheric pressure, the higher the nucleation rate is, the larger the crystal size of M-ZSM-5 obtained ; that is, the crystal size in the order of $K^+>Na^+>Cs^+>Li^+$. In addition, it also suggests that regardless of alkali cations to be used, the current synthesis method can produce M-ZSM-5 with BET surface area greater than $300m^2/g$ within 52hrs. of reaction time, in particular greater than $400m^2/g$ within 32hrs, for $Na^+$ cation.

The transformation of butanes and 1-butene into aromatic compounds was performed over HZSM-5 catalyst and its Ag ion-exchanged form. The yield of aromatic hydrocarbons appreciably increased by incorporating silver cations into HZSM-5. The silver cations serve as catalysts for dehydrogenation of the starting hydrocarbons. $Ag^+$ ions could be reduced to $Ag^0$ metals with resulting in the formation of acidic OH grops by hydrogen produced during the dehydrogenation of butanes and 1-butene. The reaction of 1-butene over ZSM-5 with different loading of Ag was carried out to investigate the effect of acidic properties of these catalysts.

The catalytic conversion of ethanol to aromatic compounds ETA was studied over ZSM-5 heterogeneous catalysts. The effect of reaction temperature, weight hourly space velocity (WHSV), and addition of water and methanol, which are the potential impurities of bio-ethanol, on the catalytic performance was investigated in a fixed bed reactor. Commercial ZSM-5 catalysts having different Si/$Al_2$ ratios of 23 to 280 and modified ZSM-5 catalysts by addition of metal (Zn, La, Cu, and Ga) were used for the activity and stability tests in ETA reaction. The catalysts were characterized with ammonia temperature programmed desorption ($NH_3$-TPD) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques. The results of catalytic performance revealed that the optimal Si/$Al_2$ ratio of ZSM-5 is about 50~80 and the selectivity to aromatic compounds decreases in the order of Zn/La > Zn > La > Cu > Ga for the modified ZSM-5 catalysts. Among these catalysts from the ETA reaction, Zn-La/ZSM-5 showed the best catalytic performance for the ETA reaction. The selectivity to aromatic compounds was 72% initially and 56% after 30 h over the catalysts at reaction temperature of $437^{\circ}C$ and WHSV of $0.8h^{-1}$.

Catalytic cracking of n-octane was carried out over H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts after calcination with air and steaming with 100% steam in the temperature range of $550-750^{\circ}C$ for 24 h and compared with the results of thermal cracking. The increase of calcination and steaming temperature resulted in the decrease of surface area, pore volume, and strong acid sites, which was mainly caused by the dealumination of H-ZSM-5 framework. It was found by $^{27}Al$ and $^{29}Si$ MAS NMR that the dealumination was proceeded through the transformation process of tetrahedral framework Al${\rightarrow}$penta-cordinated Al ${\rightarrow}$ octahedral framework Al and the phenomena was much more severe in steaming conditions than that of calcination. In the catalytic cracking of n-octane, as the temperatures of calcination and steaming were increased, the conversion of n-octane, the selectivity of light olefins and ethylene to propylene ratio were decreased due to the dealumination of framework aluminum resulting the loss of acidic strengths. The conversion, selectivity of light olefins and ethylene to propylene ratio reached almost to the level of thermal cracking after steaming at $750^{\circ}C$ for 24 h.
