The catalytic activity of ZSM-5 catalyst for the disproportionation of toluene is dependent on the type of cation exchanged, the degree of ion-exchange and the reaction temperature. The activity increases in the order of alkaline-, alkali earth-, hydrogen, and rare-earth-exchanged ZSM-5 and decreases with increasing degree of cation exchange. Among the ion-exchanged ZSM-5 catalyst, only Cs-ZSM-5 shows predominant selectivity for p-xylene. The selectivity increases with increasing degree of $Cs^+$-exchange and decreasing reaction temperature. This phenomenon is interpreted in terms of shape selectivity arising from the partial blocking of channel intersections by large cesium ions.

In this study, in order to make up its draw-back in Cu-ZSM-5 catalytic system, some of transition metals or alkaline earth metals were cocation-exchanged in Cu-ZSM-5. Among various cocation-ion-exchanged ZSM-5 catalysts, Mg/Cu-ZSM-5 has been found the most active and durable in NOx reduction even at high oxygen content as well as at the presence of water vapor. The role of Mg in ZSM-5 is supposed to prevent the dealumination of aluminum ions in super-cage even at harsh hydro-thermal conditions, and also it seems to stabilize the Cu ions in the structure. In order to prepare commercially available catalysts, Mg/Cu-ZSM-5 catalysts were wash-coated on the surface of honeycomb type monolith, and tested in terms of catalytic activities. As a result, it was found that the catalyst prepared bt the wash-coating showed satisfactorily high NOx conversion for the practical use in SCR process.

Hierarchical mesoporous ZSM-5 with enhanced mesoporosity was synthesized by microwave through the rapid assembly via ionic interaction between sulfonic acid functionalized ZSM-5 nano particles and cationic surfactant. The catalytic performance of enhanced accessibility due to mesoporosity and acidity were investigated in the alkylation of mesitylene with benzyl alcohol as alkylating agent. The effect of mole ratio of aromatic with benzyl alcohol, reaction time and alkylation agent were also studied. The enhanced mesoporosity and acidity of sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5 induced activity enhancement compared with non-functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5, sulfonic functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5 synthesized by hydrothermal method and conventional microporous ZSM-5. The sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous ZSM-5 showed much higher chemoselectivity of benzylated mesitylene than others, whereas the others mainly show dibenzyl ether as product. This significant difference in catalytic selectivity was resulted from the existence of mesopores, which definitely allowed the benzylation in mesopores.
$De-NO_x$ transition metals(Cu, Co)/ZSM-5 catalyst was made by mechanical alloying method, and their microstructures and repeated usage-properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The conversions ability of NO in the catalyst was measured. A part of ZSM-5 in CO/ZSM-5 composite powders was amorphous and the amorphous phase became less stable with increasing Co content. Conversion ability of NO in 10Cu/ZSM-5 powders decreased from 89% to 12% and that in 10Co/ZSM-5 decreased from 22% to 17% by 7 times conversion tests.
The exhaust gas from vehicle engines and industrial boilers contains considerable amount of harmful nitrogen monoxide(NO) which causes air pollusion and acid rain. To remove NO catalytic reduction processes using Cu ion exchanged ZSM-5 zeolite have been widely studied. In this study, an attempt was made to fabricate Cu/zeolite catalyst by using high energy ball mill. The catalytic performance of ball milled Cu/ZSM-5 zeolites is analyzed and optimum copper contents was determined. The processing variables were reaction temperature and copper contents. Complete removal of NO gas was obtained at the temperature of 553 K on 10wt.% CU/ZSM-5 mechanically alloyed composite powders. Mechanically alloyed CU/ZSM-5 catalyst showed homogeneous distribution of Cu in ZSM-5.
Using uniform flat plate-like samples of ZSM-5 zeolites, diffusion coefficients were measured volumetrically for the diffusion of xylene, ethyltoluene and diethylbenzene by direct measurement of sorption rate. Toluene disproportionation over H(100)-, K(72)-and Cs(82)-ZSM-5 at 773 K and toluene methylation, toluene ethylation and ethylbenzene ethylation over Cs(75)-ZSM-5 at 623 K were carried out. The selective formation of para xylene during the toluene disproportionation, presumably due to the increased tortuosity over Cs-ZSM-5, could be explained by smaller diffusion coefficient in Cs-ZSM-5 than in K-and H-ZSM-5. The para selectivity increased in the order; toluene methylation < toluene ethylation < ethylbenzene ethylation. As the chain length of the alkyl substituent in dialkylbenzenes is increased, the para selectivity of the products was improved. It may be attributed to the differences in the ratios of diffusion coefficient of para products to that of ortho ones. Diffusion coefficient of m-xylene was about 1 order of magnitude smaller than that of o-xylene.
Over 800 thousand tons per year (TPY) agricultural biowastes, such as sugar cane bagasse, sugarcane leaf, rice straw, rice husk and corn leaf, are produced in Taiwan. These biomasses are the major types of agricultural wastes and are abundantly available. However, these biowastes cause disposal and landfill problems. Ossification ashes of the agricultural biowastes containing 70-95 % amorphous silica would make the utilization system of agricultural biowaste ashes become highly economically and environmentally attractive. Experimentally, high crystallinity (99%$^{+}$) zeolites ZSM-5 and ZSM-48 synthesized from the reaction mixtures containing a silica source from ashes of these biowastes gasification were investigated. Tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) and 1,6-diamino-hexane (C$_{6}$ DN) were used as structure-directing agents in syntheses of ZSM-5 and ZSM-48, respectively. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) data indicated that ZSM-5 or ZSM-48 with a high crystallinity can be obtained within 48 hours of crystallization in the high pressure (15-20 atm) autoclave at 393-473 K. The Si/Al ratios of synthetic zeolite products were determined by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and induced couple plasma/mass spectroscopy (ICP/MS). It was observed that the ZSM-5 crystals a.e composed of hexagonal rod-shaped crystals with typically 8-13 пm in size by SEM. In addition, ZSM-48 crystalline materials are composed of spherical aggregates of needle-shaped or rod-like crystals with typically 2-3 пm in diameter and 6-8 пm in length.h.
The synthetic conditions and characteristics of ZSM-5 type zeolites (ZSM-5/silicalite) for the preparation of the zeolite composite membranes for gas separation were investigated. ZSM-5 zeolites could be synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment of the mixture of colloidal silica sol aluminum nitrate sodium hydroxide and TPABr at a temperature range of 150-17$0^{\circ}C$ in the autoclave. Silicalties were done from the solution of water glass water and TPABr. Their crystalline structures transformed from orthorhombic to monoclinic from and their pore structures of three-dimensional channels were opened as TPABr filling channels was burned off at the calcination temperature of 50$0^{\circ}C$. The specific surface area of the calcined zeolite was about 360 m3/g and its surface property was hydrophobic. Crystal sizes of ZSM-5 and silicalite were 0.5-1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 8-10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively having no change due to the calcination. In particular the shape and the size of the ZSM-5 type zeolite were sensitively varied with silica sources and concentrations of reaction solutions/sols.
Methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether (DME) has been investigated over ZSM-5 zeolites and compared with that of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Although the catalytic activity was decreased with an increase in silica/alumina ratio, the DME selectivity increased. H-ZSM-5 and NaH-ZSM-5 zeolites were more active for conversion of methanol to DME than ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. $Na^+$ ion-exchanged H-ZSM-5 (NaH-ZSM-5) shows higher DME selectivity than H-ZSM-5 due to the selective removal of strong acid sites.
Using low temperature and atmospheric pressure method, we synthesized Na, TPA-ZSM-5 with Si/Al ratio of about 100. We employed 27Al and 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy and FT-IR to investigate the crystallization process as a function of time. The chemical shift depends on the initial composition of reactants and changes during the course of synthesis different from those reported by others earlier. However, the chemical shift of our final product showed in the range of typical ZSM-5. And the defect site was removed by the calcine. From XRD and SEM data, the formation of ZSM-5 was also confirmed.
