  • In this paper we propose a small form factor actuator using an inclined motion guide for auto-focusing and zoom motions for mobile information devices. The novel structure using the inclined motion guide and a lens-supporting beam converts the circular motion by an ultrasonic motor into the linear motion of the optical lens. The proposed actuator has a simple structure to minimizing the mechanical tolerance, and the stroke is easy to modify by controlling the inclined angle. Experiments using a prototype verify the validity of the model as small form factor optical actuator.

  • The effects of the folwrate on the dropsize from the two-phase coaxial nozzle are investigated by using the direct photographic method and the empirical equation is obtained. For the photography, the light source which the life time is the order of 100ns is fabricated and the lens is the zoom lens which has the MICRO function with a teleconvertor. The distillated water and the compressed air of the surrounding temperature are injected and atomized. For the purpose of the exact adjustment and measurement of the flowrates, the two rotameters are used. As a result of this study, the sauter mean diameter of droplets has a tendency for a logarithmic function with air flowrate and for a exponential function with water flowrate.

  • Information about camera operating such as zoom, focus, pan, tilt and tracking is useful not only for efficient video coding, but also for content-based video representation. A camera operating parameter measurement system designed specifically for these applications is therefore developed. This system, implemented in real time and synchronized with the video signal, measures the precise camera operating parameters. We calibrated the camera lens using a camera model that accounts for redial lens distortion. The system is then applied to infer image motion from pan and tilt operating parameters. The experimental results show that the inferred motion coincides with the actual motion very well, with an error of less than 0.5 pixel even for large motion up to 80 pixels.

  • As Rhenium-Iridium{Re-Ir) coating possesses such features as, high hardness, high elasticity, abrasion resistance and chemical stability, there have been exerted continuous efforts in research works in a variety of fields, and this technology has also been applied widely to industrial areas. In this research, the optimal grinding condition was identified using Microlens Process Machine in order to contribute to the development of aspheric glass lens for mobile phone module having 3 mega pixel and 2.5X zoom, and molding core(WC) was manufactured having performed ultra-precision machining. Effects of Re-Ir coating on form accuracy (P-V) of molding core and surface roughness(Ra) were measured and evaluated.

  • In this paper, the design and characteristics of a novel ultrasonic motor are investigated. Such a motor is appropriate far use in the optical zoom or auto focusing functions of the lens system in mobile phones. Its design and simulation of performances are carried out by FEM commercial software (ATILA). The shape of the motor is similar to a square without one side, on which an optical lens can be mounted. Two sheets of piezoelectric ceramics are adhered to both sides of two legs of the elastic body, respectively To drive the ultrasonic motor, the voltage is applied to two sheets of piezoelectric ceramics bonded to one leg. The rotation direction can be easily changed by switching the piezoelectric sheets bonded to the other leg, to which voltage is applied. A proto type of the motor is fabricated and its outer size is $10^*10^*2[mm3]$ including the camera lens of which the diameter is 7.5(mm). Its power consumption is about 0.3[W] and the speed of rotation is adjustable from 10 to 200[rpm] according to the applied voltage

  • This paper describes the design technology for a third generation thermal imaging system, which is more compact than before, using a $320\times240$ mid-IR focal plane detector. The third generation non-scanning thermal imaging system was constructed as a compact thermal imaging module as a reconnaissance, surveillance and navigation sensor for helicopter and infantry vehicles in the $1980's\sim1990's$ and now, we designed a new compact infrared camera and studied a new type of non-uniformity correction lens fer this camera.

  • Shince the introduction of machine methods into industry a problem has existed which has never been adequately solved. .... That is to say, there is no difference between the essential qualities of Machine art and abstract art, which is the main style of fine arts in the present day. This problem has been discussed by John Ruskin, William Morris, Herbert Read. In this study, I discussed the artistic value in the modern graphic arts from the standpoint of Herbert Read on the machine art. According to the above-mentioned discussings, we can come to the conclusion as follows 1) The machine art lie at the root of abstract art, and whenever the final product of machine is designed or determined by anyone sensitive to formal values, that product can and does become an abstract work of art in the subtler sense of the term. 2) We must recognize that graphic design is a function of the abstract artist, and the abstract artist must be given a place in the graphic arts in which be is not already established, and his decision on all questions of design must be final. 3) Therefore, the graphic designer must have therough knowledge of graphic arts technology in order to give the artistic value to the objects of machine production.

  • Recently, with the increasing lightness and miniaturization of high resolution camera phones, the demand for aspheric glass lens has increased because plastic and spherical lens are unable to satisfy the required performance. An aspheric glass lens is fabricated by the high temperature and pressure molding using a tungsten carbide molding core, so precision grinding and coating technology for the molding core surface are required. This study investigates the effect of diamond-like carbon (DLC) and rhenium-iridium (Re-Ir) coating For aspheric molding core surface. The grinding conditions of the tungsten carbide molding core were obtained by design of experiments (DOE) for application in the ultra precision grinding process of the tungsten carbide molding core of the aspheric glass lens used in 5 megapixel, $4{\times}$ zoom camera phone modules. A tungsten carbide molding core was fabricated under this grinding condition and coated with the DLC and Re-Ir coating. By measurements, the effect of DLC and Re-Ir coating on the form accuracy and surface roughness of molding coer was evaluated.

  • Iris recognition is a biometric technique which uses unique iris patterns between the pupil and sclera. The advantage of iris recognition lies in high recognition accuracy; however, for good performance, it requires the diameter of the iris to be greater than 200 pixels in an input image. So, a conventional iris system uses a camera with a costly and bulky zoom lens. To overcome this problem, we propose a new method to restore a low resolution iris image into a high resolution image using a single image. This study has three novelties compared to previous works: (i) To obtain a high resolution iris image, we only use a single iris image. This can solve the problems of conventional restoration methods with multiple images, which need considerable processing time for image capturing and registration. (ii) By using bilinear interpolation and a constrained least squares (CLS) filter based on the degradation model, we obtain a high resolution iris image with high recognition performance at fast speed. (iii) We select the optimized parameters of the CLS filter and degradation model according to the zoom factor of the image in terms of recognition accuracy. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of iris recognition was enhanced using the proposed method.

  • A high performance LWIR(long wavelength infra red) zoom thermal imaging sensor using $480{\times}6$ HgCdTe(MCT) linear detector has been developed by ADD Korea. The optical system consists of zoom telescope having large objective about 190 mm diameter and optically well corrected scanning system. The zoom ratio of the telescope is 3: 1 and its magnification change is performed by moving two lens groups. And also these moving groups are used for athermalization of the system. It is certain that the zoom sensor can be used in wide operating temperature range without any degradation of the system performance. Especially, the sensor image can be displayed with the HDTV(high definition television) format of which aspect ratio is 16:9. In case of HDTV format, the scanning system is able to display 620,000 pixels. This function can make wider horizontal field of view without any loss of performance than the normal TV format image. The MRTD(minimum resolvable temperature difference) of the LWIR thermal imaging sensor shows good results below 0.04 K at spatial frequency 2 cycles/mrad and 0.23 K at spatial frequency 8 cycles/mrad at the narrow field of view.
