Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of grape seeds was performed under the different conditions based on a central composite design for independent variables of microwave power ($0{\sim}120\;W$), ethanol concentration ($0{\sim}100%$) and extraction time ($1{\sim}5\;min$). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to predict the optimum extraction conditions for three dependent variables in grape seed extracts: total yield, total catechin and electron donating ability. Determination coefficients ($R^2$) of regression equations for the three dependent variables were higher than 0.9 (p < 0.01). The optimal MAE conditions to yield the maximum value of total catechin (434.16 mg%) were 122.76 W microwave power, 42.88% ethanol and 4.67 min extraction time. The superimposed contour maps for maximizing the three dependent variables indicated that the MAE condition ranges were 75150 W, 4060% ethanol and 3.55.0 min. The predicted values at the optimized conditions (6.72% total yield, 408.65 mg% total catechin, and 83.33% electron donation ability) were similar to the experimental values. The optimized MAE (112.5 W, 50% EtOH, 4.2 min) was more efficient than the conventional solvent extraction using 80% EtOH, $60^{\circ}C$ for 3h and 150 rpm.

Extraction characteristics of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and the functional properties of the corresponding extracts were monitored by the response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum extraction yield of 38.83% was obtained under the specific extraction conditions, such as microwave power of 126.68 W, ethanol concentration of 53.39% and extraction time of 8.15 min. The maximum electron donating ability (EDA) was found as 77.92% at the conditions of 58.25 W microwave power, 91.87% ethanol concentration and 5.54 min extraction time. The maximum inhibitory effect on tyrosinase was 79.39% at 106.08 W, 2.06% and 5.61 min. The maximum polyphenol content was 105.59% under the extraction conditions of 81.82 W, 99.52% and 4.06 min. Based on superimposition of four dimensional RSM with respect to extraction yield and electron donating ability and polyphenol content obtained under the various extraction conditions, the optimum ranges of extraction conditions were found to be microwave power of $0{\sim}80\;W$, ethanol concentration of $0{\sim}40%$ and extraction time of $3{\sim}7$ min.

Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to monitor extraction characteristics of extracts from Sarcodon aspratus. Based on a central composite design, independent variables were microwave power (30~150 W), ethanol concentration (0~100%), and extraction time (1~9 min). Dependent variables were yield, electron-donating ability, total phenol contents, and SOD-like activity. Coefficients of determination ($R^2$) for dependent variables ranged from 0.80 at 0.97. The maximum extraction yield was 50.28% under conditions of 125.1 W microwave power, 18.67% ethanolic concentration, and 7.06 min extraction time. The maximum extraction electron-donating ability was 22.14% under conditions of 31.09 W, 45.76%, and 4.32 min. The maximum extraction total polyphenol content was 30.54 mg tannic acid equivalent/g at 122.54 W, 48.05%, and 8.36 min. The maximum extraction SOD-like activity was 33.44% at 121.17 W, 47.42%, and 8.41 min. Based on superimposition of four dimensional RSM with respect to extraction yield, electron-donating ability, total polyphenol content, and SOD-like activity obtained under various extraction conditions, optimum ranges of extraction conditions were found to be microwave power of 78~88 W, ethanol concentration of 39~57%, and extraction time of 3.5~9 min.

Several extraction conditions of mussel were investigated for preparation of the extract as a natural shellfish seasoning. The conditions studied were extraction temperature and time, addition of sodium phosphates and citrate and hydrolysis with commercial proteolytic enzymes. The extracts were prepared by deshelling, grinding and aqueous extraction followed by centrifugation and filtration. Extraction at $90^{\circ}C$ for 40min showed the highest solids yield with less fishy and high umami taste. Among the several phosphates and citrate added, $Na_{3}PO_{4}$ and $Na_{4}P_{2}O_{7}$ at 1% level were most effective in terms of the yield and umami taste. The pH effects showed that pH 10 resulted the highest solids yield of 28% with less fishy taste. Even though the effect of enzymatic hydrolysis was not greatly different among the commercial enzymes tested, Protamex and Protease II were somewhat better than other enzymes in taste. When the mussel were extracted by the combined conditions, hydrolysis with Protamex followed by extraction at $90^{\circ}C$ for 40min with addition of $Na_{3}PO_{4}$ at pH 10, the solid yields increased up to 30% which was about 58% improvement and high intensity of umami taste and less fishy flavor.

Environment-friendly growth enhancers for rice are being promoted to reverse the negative impact of intensive chemical-based and conventional rice farming on yield sustainability and environmental problems. Several rhizosphere microorganisms and pyroligneous acids (PA) had demonstrated beneficial influence on growth, yield and grain quality of rice. Since most of the previous study had evaluated the effect of PGPR and PA on paddy rice singly, the effect of combined application of these on the growth and yield of paddy rice and on some soil chemical properties were determined. A four factorial pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of PGPR, PA in combination with fertilizers and on different soil types. There were 54 treatment combinations including the control with three replications under complete randomized design. Plant growth parameters were evaluated using standard procedures during tillering and heading stages. Rice yield and some soil chemical properties were determined at harvest. Results showed that inoculation of Bacillus licheniformis and Fusarium fujikuroi enhanced plant growth by increasing the plant height which could be ascribe to its ability to promote IAA and GA production in plants. Inoculation of Rhizobium phaseoli enhanced chlorophyll content indicative to its ability to improve the N nutrition. However, these plant growth benefits during the vegetative stage were override by the fertilizer application effect especially during the maturity stage and grain yield. High fertilization rates on coarse-textured soil without nutrient loss resulted to high available nutrients and consequently high yield. Wood vinegar application however improved nutrient availability in soil which could be beneficial for improving soil quality. Further evaluation is necessary to fully assess the potential benefits that could be derived from inoculation of these organisms and wood vinegar application in different soil environment especially under different field conditions.

An experiment was conducted to study the efficiency of cyanobacterial biofertilizer (CBB) with chemical (NPK) fertilizer on quantitative and qualitative characters of mulberry variety Kanva-2. Their influences on silkworm growth and cocoon characters were also studied. Ten different CBB and NPK fertilizer treatments were given to 5000 plants of established mulberry garden. Treatments were of four types viz., (i) T1 to T7: single and combination dose of CBB+50% NPK (ii) T8: combination dose of CBB + 25%NPK, (iii) T9: CBB only and (iv) T10: control-l00% NPK. Soil pH decreased and nutrients status increased in CBB (T1- T9) treated plots. Average of ten crops data on quantitative traits revealed that T7 (CBB [N. muscorum (1.0 g), A. variahilis (1.0) and S. millei (1.0 g)] + 50% NPK) was very effective in improving growth parameters. Leaf yield was also found high in treatment T7 (32.12 tons/ha/yr.) followed by T10 (31.17 tons/ha/yr.) and T8 (27.67 tons/ha/yr.). Leaf quality characters were found high in T7 and low in T9. Most of the quality traits in T7 are on par with control no. The results revealed that reduction in the dose of chemical fertilizers in T7 did not affect the leaf yield and leaf quality traits of mulberry. This clearly indicates that the efficiency of CBB (T7) provides nitrogen, increases essential nutrients available in soil, maintain soil pH and supply growth substances required for the improvement of leaf yield and leaf quality of mulberry. Bioassay study also revealed no significant difference in silkworm growth and cocoon characters between treatments T7 and T10. Economics calculated revealed that T7 is highly economical and beneficial over T10 by gaining an amount of Rs. 660/-/acre/crop. Thus, treatment T7 containing N. muscorum (1.0 g), A. variahilis (1.0 g) and S. millei (1.0 g) + 50% NPK fertilizers can be recommended to sericulturists mainly to reduce the use of NPK fertilizers, by saving 50% of its cost and to improve soil fertility conditions, which in turn improves leaf yield and quality of mulberry.
This study was conducted to compare soybean growth and yield and the degree of weed emergence according to no-tillage and conventional tillage system in two different drained paddy fields, loam of Chilgok series and silty clay loam of Deokpyeong series. In both soil conditions, the maturing time of the soybeans by the no-tillage system was two days earlier than that by the conventional tillage system. In the loam of Chilgok series, the stem length of the soybeans in the no-tillage system was 5.7 cm longer than that in the conventional tillage system. The miss-planted rate and diseased plants of black root rot (Calonectria iliacola) in the no-tillage system were 9.2% and 2.8% lower, respectively than those in the conventional tillage system. Also, the nodulation and seed yield in the no-tillage system were 32% and 13% more, respectively, than those in the conventional tillage system. In the silty clay loam of Deokpyeong series, the stem length of the soybeans in the no-tillage system was 4.6cm shorter than in the conventional tillage system. The diseased plants of black root rot (Calonectria iliacola) in the no-tillage system were 4.2% lower than those in the conventional tillage system. Also, no significant difference in the seed yield between the no-tillage and conventional tillage systems was observed. On the other hand, there was a lower occurrence of weed in the no-tillage system than in the conventional tillage system, and the income increased by 19% owing to yield increase and reduced management costs.

This study was conducted to determine the nutritive value of live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and to investigate its effects on milk yield, milk composition and some blood parameters in lactating cows. Six multiparous Holstein cows were allocated to two groups of three cows and assigned randomly to one of two diets in a cross-over experiment. Daily 50 g RumiSacc was top dressed at the p.m. feeding for the treatment group. RumiSacc supplied a high protein and energy with high organic matter digestibility values (83.35%) determined by in vitro enzymatic analysis. Yeast culture supplementation significantly increased milk yield, tended to increase fat yield, protein yield and lactose yield of milk. Methylated fatty acid level of 18:3 (n-3) in milk fat was increased by yeast culture supplementation. The concentrations of methionine, phenyalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan and taurine were significantly increased with dietary inclusion of yeast culture. Live yeast culture supplementation did not affect other performance characteristics, milk quality characteristics and blood parameters. As a conclusion live yeast culture (RumiSacc, Saccharomyces cerevisiae) had high nutritive value and positive effects on milk production and some milk quality characteristics in lactating cows under field conditions.
Optimization of the chitosanoligosaccharide production was studied with chitosanase. The optimum conditions for the enzymic reaction have been determined. Enzyme stability was maintained above 90% after 6 days at pH 5.0. The optimum initial reaction rate was appeared in 1.0% of chitosan solution. The production yield of chitosanoligosaccharides was over at 0.4%~2.0% of chitosan. At 4.0% of chitosan solution, however, the production yield was decreased to 64.6%. To increase the yield, stepwise addition of substrate into the reactor was investigated. In this case, the yield was increased from 64.6% to 83.2% and the final concentrations of chitosanoligosaccharide was 12.26 mg/mL. By TLC analysis, most of the chitosanoligosaccharides produced were 3-5 mers.

Grain Sorghum varieties grown in Korea have low productivity and are constrained by the fact that farmers' choice of improved varieties is limited. Hybrid cultivars have been demonstrated to be more productive and food security than pure line varieties. However, There's no available hybrid cultivars and never planted before in Korea. This study was, therefore, conducted to determine combining ability of Korean landrace varieties and cultivar, the level of heterosis of experimental hybrids depending on environments. Two cytoplasmic male-sterile lines were crossed with six male-fertile lines in accordance with North Carolina II mating scheme to generate 12 experimental hybrids. The hybrids were evaluated in replicated row-column alpha designs at two sites in Texas and South Korea under on-season production conditions. For each trait, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects were estimated using the line-tester method of analysis. Results indicated significant differences among genotypes for both grain yield potential and secondary traits. Hybrids were predominant for grain yield, and displayed up to 127% heterosis of A03017 ${\times}$ Sodamchal in Korea. Positive GCA for yield was observed for Donganme, Hwanggeumchal and Jungmo4002 in Korea. Among them Jungmo4002 and Donganme had highly positive for yield (227.90 and 84.90 kg ha-1), while it showed negative GCA for yield in College station (-40.90, -189.60 kg ha-1). ATx630 ${\times}$ Sodamchal had the greatest SCA for yield (468.10 kg/ha) in College station but at South Korea its SCA effect was -302.40 kg/ha. A similar trend was observed, followed by A03017 ${\times}$ Donganme (SCA effect = 215 kg ha-1 at College station vs. -44.20 kg ha-1 at South Korea). At South Korea the greatest positive SCA effect for grain was observed in ATx630 ${\times}$ Jungmo4002 as 322.20 kg/ha. Both GCA and SCA effects significantly interacted with site effects demonstrating the need for region adaptation of potential cultivars and test for developing Korea suitable cultivar.
