A Comparison of the Storability in MA Storage and the Quality of Paprika Fruit among Cultivars (MA저장 중 파프리카 과실의 품종별 품질 및 저장성 비교)

  • This study was carried out to compare the storability in MA storage and quality of paprika fruits among 9 cultivars grown in 2011 and 12 cultivars in 2012. 'Mosanto 7044' was the most proper cultivar in red-type paprika has grown in 2011 for MA storage, because it showed relatively higher fruit weight, firmness, soluble solid content, and the lowest ethylene production rate, as well as the second longest shelf life. 'Stayer' was suitable cultivar in yellow-type paprika cultivated in 2011, because it showed higher firmness, soluble solid content and lower ethylene production rate than other cultivars. 'Nagano' was the most proper cultivar in red-type paprika has grown in 2012 for MA storage. Because it showed relatively higher fruit weight, firmness, flesh thickness and the lowest ethylene production rate and decay ratio, although the shelf life of 'Nagano' was the third longest (28 days). 'Freestar' was the excellent cultivar in yellow-type paprika cultivated in 2012, because it showed higher firmness, vitamin C content and lower respiration rate than other cultivars and the longest shelf life of 26 days. The shelf life had a high correlationship with ethylene production rate (r = -0.5504), and soluble solid (r = 0.6112), as comparing with the shelf life and the fruit characteristics of 21 cultivars paprika has grown in 2011 and 2012.

Infection of Clinostomum complanatum(Rudolphi, 1814) (Trematoda : Digenia) metacercaria in goldfish (Carassius auratus) cultured in Korea (금붕어에 기생한 Clinostomum complanatum(Rud., 1814)의 피낭유충에 관하여)

  • Many encysted metacercariae of Clinostomum complanatum(Rudolphi, 1814) were found in the flesh near the skin of goldfish(Carassius auratus) sultured at a fish farm in Chonbuk Province, Korea, in the summer of 1995. The mortality reached about 7% from July 10 to August 20. Encysted and excysted metacercariae were$700\sim877{\times}700\sim775{\mu}m$ and $2.4\sim5.5{\times}0.7\sim1.37{\mu}m$ in size, respectively. The parasites looked yellowish due to the yellow particulate matter in the intestine. Of 276 fish examined, 234(84.8%) were infected with a mean intensity of 216.6(range 1~1.214) parasites. Fish of 2.0~2.5 cm in body length were most frequently(94.3%) infected but those of 3.1~3.5 cm were the least infected(75.27%). The isthmus was most heavily infected. There was no difference in prevalence between two forms of goldfish, Gyariko an Ryugum. The sites of infection were swollen and recognized as yellow spots of 0.4~0.8 mm in diameter. Fish infected with more than 200 metacercariae became moribund with listless swimming and finally died.

Occurrence and Damage by Thrips on Greenhouse-Cultivated Fig (시설재배 무화과에서 총채벌레의 발생과 피해)

  • This study was conducted to assess the occurrence and damages by thrips on greenhouse-cultivated fig in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, Korea. We identified the collected species as Thrips tabaci Lindeman, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, and F. intonsa Trybom. The density of thrips in the greenhouses during the summer months was monitored using yellow sticky traps; T. tabaci showed the highest density, followed by F. occidentalis and F. intonsa. The damages by thrips were characterized by stunted plant growth because of delayed discoloration of the pericarp, and development of rough fruit surface. Stereomicroscopic observation on the fruit flesh revealed the growth of gray mold at the damaged area, as well as the dead bodies and exuviae of thrips. The rates of fig fruit damages per month, were 18.2%, 9.7%, 2.9%, and 1.3% in July, August, September, and October, respectively.

Effects of fruit bags and bagging time on fruit quality indices at harvest time in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' pears (봉지종류 및 괘대시기가 '원황' 및 '화산' 배 과실의 수확기 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • We tested fruits quality and skin coloration of two pear cultivar 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' produced by bagging with different kinds of paper bags in the Cheonan area, Chungnam Province, Korea. The fruits were bagged at 35, 45, 55 or 65 days after full bloom (DAFB) with 3 kinds of double layer paper bag which consisted of grey color, yellow color and newspaper for outer layer. The great extent of light interruption was observed in grey colored outer paperbag among three kinds of paperbag which showed only 0.46% of lowest light transmittance when compared with 43.7% and 40.0% of yellow paper and newspaper, respectively. The development of skin redness ($a^*$) increased with the delay of bagging time in two pear cultivars. But the fruits treated at 65 DAFB showed uneven coloration and excessive development of redness which represented low fruit external appearance value. Uniform flesh firmness was attained at the fruits bagged with grey outer color paperbag regardless of bagging time, although the fruit quality indices including soluble solids and titratable acidity did not change significantly by using different kind of fruit bags and bagging time in two pear cultivar. Based on our results, it was explained that the grey-colored fruit bag had positive effect on the development of skin coloration without any detrimental effect on fruit quality factors in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' pears.

Lycopene Content and Fruit Morphology of Red, Pink, Orange, and Yellow Fleshed Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) Germplasm Collections

  • High-quality and high-phytonutrient watermelon fruits have strong market opportunities besides their health related benefits. Hence, investigating quality and nutritional related traits of watermelon genetic resources could provide important baseline data in breeding for increased lycopene content thereby increasing the marketability of watermelon. To this end, we have examined some fruit morphological traits and lycopene content of 105 genetic resources. Seeds, originally obtained from 22+ countries, were obtained from the National Agrobiodiversity Center, Jeonju, South Korea, grown in an experimental field and harvested at a fully mature stage. The size of pistil scar (SPS), the width of stripes (WS), weight of fruit (WF), length of fruit (LF), width of fruit (WIF), the thickness of pericarp (TP), soluble solids content (SSC), fruit shape in longitudinal section, ground color of skin, the intensity of the green color of skin, fruit shape at the apical part, grooving distribution, conspicuousness of stripes, and main color of the flesh were recorded on the field and inside laboratory and the lycopene was measured using spectrophotometric and HPLC methods. Watermelon fruits have shown a diverse morphological characters. Red and pink fleshed fruits dominated in the entire collections. Fruits with higher thickness of rind were found to exhibit less soluble solid content (SSC). Korean origin fruits were characterized by intermediate SSC while the United States of America (USA), Russia (RUS), Tajikistan (TJK), Turkmenistan (TKM), Taiwan (TWN), and Uruguay (URY) originated fruits had the highest SSC. The lycopene content varied between 41.37 and 182.82 ㎍/g, 2.81 and 163.72 ㎍/g, and 3.54 and 255.47 ㎍/g using HPLC, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and microplate reader spectrophotometer, respectively. Red- and pink-fleshed fruits had the highest levels of lycopene content compared to the yellow- and orange-fleshed. Lycopene content had a significant positive correlation with SSC, however, no correlations were detected between lycopene and other quantitative fruit morphological characters. Our study demonstrated high diversity exists in fruit morphological traits and lycopene content of the germplasm collections which provide beneficial baseline data for a future breeding program and utilization of watermelon germplasm collections in gene banks for the maintenance and improvement of the current levels of production, marketability, and health-related benefit of watermelon fruits.

Gui Valley: A High Yielding Potential and Good Processing Potato Cultivar

  • The main objective of this breeding program is to develop high yielding, disease resistance and good processing potato cultivar. 'Gui Valley' is a clonal selection resulting from a cross between 'ND2471-8' and 'Cona'. It has medium plant height and light green foliage. 'Gui Valley' has medium flowering habit and light pink flowers. 'Gui Valley' is a medium maturing potato cultivar and tubers are smooth, yellow skin, light yellow flesh, long-oval tuber shape, distinct red eyes with medium depth and medium dormancy. It has high level of tuber uniformity and good keeping quality. 'Gui Valley' demonstrates resistance to potato virus Y (PVY), soft rot, but moderately susceptible to late blight and common scab. It is also resistant to most of the internal and external physiological disorders particularly dehiscence, hollow heart and internal brown spot. The specific gravity of 'Gui Valley' is significantly higher (1.097) than that of 'Shepody' (1.078). 'Gui Valley' has suitable for processing mainly French fries and chips. This cultivar has high level of tuber uniformity and capable of yielding 37.6 $t{\cdot}ha^{-1}$, which is 18.2% higher than the control potato cultivar 'Shepody' under optimum agronomical practices.

An Indole Alkaloid from the Fruiting Body of Boletus umbriniporus (암갈색그물버섯(Boletus umbriniporus)에서 분리한 indole alkaloid)

  • Mushrooms are valued as a nutritional food and also as an important source of useful medicinal components. They produce various secondary metabolites which have interesting biological activities and unique chemical structures. As part of our ongoing investigation on chemical constituents and bioactive components of Korean native mushrooms, compound 1, an indole alkaloid, was isolated from the fruiting body of Boletus umbriniporus. B. umbriniporus is characterized by its yellow flesh, which changes to pallid blue when exposed to air, and its chemical constituent has not been reported. Chemical structure of compound 1 was determined to be flazin on the basis of ESI-mass, $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, $^1H-^1H$ COSY, HMQC, and HMBC analysis. This compound was isolated from the fruiting body of B. umbriniporus for the first time.

Inhibitory Effect of Ethyl Acetate Extract of White Peach Pericarp on Adipogenesis of 3T3-L1 Preadipocyte Cells

  • In order to determine whether peach contains compounds to regulate adipocyte differentiation, extracts of flesh/pericarp of yellow/white peach were prepared in water, ethyl acetate (EtOAc), or n-butanol solvent and determined for effects on adipocyte differentiation in C3H10T1/2 or 3T3-L1 cells. Interestingly, none of peach extracts has statistically significant stimulatory effect on the adipocyte differentiation in C3H10T1/2. Furthermore, the presence of EtOAc extract of white peach pericarp (WPP) was found to inhibit lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells both by microscopic examination of Oil Red O-stained lipid droplets and by spectrophotometric quantification of extracted stain, indicating a significant inhibitory effect on adipocyte differentiation. The inhibition of lipid accumulation was accompanied by a significant decrease in the expression levels of adipocyte molecular markers-peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor $\gamma$, CAAT enhancer binding protein $\alpha$, and fatty acid-binding protein. Thus, this study determined that WPP EtOAc extract contains the inhibitory compound(s) on adipogenesis.

  • 'Morningpurple' is a new sweetpotato variety developed by Mokpo Experiment Station, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2007, for flowering. This variety was selected from the cross between Sinchunmi and Hi-dry in 2004, seedling and line selections were practiced from 2005 to 2006. 'Morningpurple' has morning glory type flowers with purple color. It has triangular leaf, green with purple vine and petiole, elliptic storage root, red skin and yellow flesh color of storage root. The average yield of storage root was 15.0 ton/ha. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 2.6, and the average weight of storage root was 143 gram.
