  • This study reveals the unusual case reported for the first time on the selective non digestion of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) larvae by arowana fish. In January 2005, an Asian arowana (Scleropages formosus) (red variety), from Daesang Tropical Fish Corporation, Seoul, Korea, mortality was observed due to unknown cause. No putative causal factors were suggested by bacteriological and parasitological examinations. Internal examination of the dissected stomach showed some undigested debris with mandible parts of mealworms attached to the mucosal lining of stomach wall. Feeding experiment of yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) was conducted on the silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum). Result showed that on the test group, fish released vomitous material containing undigested mandibles of mealworm was observed on the 24th day of the feeding experiment. Histopathological examination of the cross section of the stomach wall layers of the test groups, showed detached parts of the mucosal layer and gastric pits around the damaged area with intact mucularis tissues. While the control group fed with mealworm larvae without head part showed intact stomach wall layers consisting of gastric pit, mucosa and mucularis tissues. Fish on both treatments survived until the termination of experiment. The removal of mealworm larvae head before feeding probably help or aid in the fast digestion of these insect larvae.

  • A survey of Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) was conducted in major oat-growing areas of Korea in 2020. BYDV is an economically important pathogen of cereal crops that can be transmitted by aphids. The present study evaluated the genetic composition of BYDV in oat from eight geographical areas in Korea. Multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to screen 322 oat leaf samples for six BYDV strains (PAV, MAV, SGV, PAS, RPV, and RMV). The 125 samples (~39%) tested positive for BYDV. BYDV-PAV, BYDV-SGV, BYDV-PAS, and BYDV-RPV were detected from oat in different areas. Most of the BYDV-infected samples were assigned to subgroup I (n=112). The results indicate that BYDV-PAV could be dominant throughout Korea. Also, the phylogenetic analysis of coat protein sequences indicated that 23 BYDV isolates from Korea could be separated into two clades, which exhibited high nucleotide sequence similarity. In conclusion, the present survey provides a BYDV infection assessment for domestic oat varieties in Korea and basic information for the development of BYDV control measures in Korea's oat industry.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the influencing factors of breast cancer recurrence by comparing the risk factors and lifestyle patterns related to breast cancer in Korean women with and without recurrence. Methods: This cross-sectional survey comprised 241 Korean women diagnosed with breast cancer who had received follow-up treatment. Participants were recruited from a university hospital in Seoul and an online social media platform for breast cancer patients. Data were collected either via online or a paper survey, using a structured questionnaire that included general and disease-related characteristics and lifestyle behaviors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, and logistic regression. Results: Recurrence of breast cancer was influenced by four factors; childbirth experience, consumption of green/yellow vegetables, drinking behavior, and recovery from fatigue after sleep. Prevalence of recurrent breast cancer was associated with no childbirth experience (OR=2.29, p=.010), fewer green/yellow vegetables (OR=0.71, p=.008), drinking behavior (OR=0.24, p=.001), and a lower level of recovery from fatigue after sleep (OR=0.51, p<.001). Conclusion: Aside from having experienced childbirth, this study identified several modifiable factors that influence breast cancer recurrence. Increasing green/ yellow vegetable intake, alleviating fatigue, and reducing alcohol intake are important. Intervention strategies in clinical research and practice can be applied to address risk factors and reduce the prevalence of recurrent breast cancer.

  • The physiological changes in sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) leaves infected with Drechslera sorghicola were investigated through five recognizable stages of disease development. Water-soaked yellowish brown spots developed two days after inoculation, turned brown with yellow halo, enlarged and coalesced at later stages of disease development. Healthy and infected leaves were analyzed for different biochemical constituents. The chlorophyll contents were decreased significantly with the progress of infection. The levels of reducing and total sugars increased while non-reducing sugars decreased to a significant extent with the progress of disease. The concentration of total phenolics, orthodihydroxy phenols, free and glycosidic phenols showed significant changes due to infection, whereas basic and acid phenols showed little or no change with disease development. Levels of phenolic compounds increased four days after inoculation and decrease thereafter, but the concentration was higher at every stage of disease development relative to healthy tissues. Polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase enzyme activities increased to varying degrees at different stages of infection. Analysis of protein fractions showed a significant increase with the progress of disease.

  • Leaf spot and blight disease was observed on two-year-old seedlings of Dendropanax morbifera (Korean name: Hwangchil tree) during July of 2008 in Jindo Island, Korea. Symptoms included yellow-brown to dark brown irregularly enlarged spots frequently located along the veins of leaves. The lesions were often surrounded by chlorotic haloes. Severe leaf blight and subsequent defoliation occurred when conditions favored disease outbreak. The causal organism of the disease was identified as Alternaria panax based on morphological characteristics and sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA. A. panax isolates induced leaf spots and blight symptoms not only on D. morbifera but also on the other members of Araliaceae tested. This is the first report of foliar blight caused by A. panax on D. morbifera.

  • Main tobacco diseases were surveyed on major flue-cured leaf tobacco fields throughout South Korea in 2006. Mosaic caused by potato virus Y and bacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum were most severe during harvest season. During last ten years, the damage by tobacco mosaic virus was reduced but the incidence of bacterial wilt increased. These changes of the disease incidences coincide with release time of the tobacco cultivar resistant to the tobacco mosaic virus but susceptible to bacterial wilt pathogen. Wild fire(Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci strain ungulate) occurred severely at Kangwon province, though the symptom of wild fire with yellow halo was not observed.

  • The availability of nucleotide sequences of the coat protein gene of Potato leafroll virus (PLRV) permitted the construction of DNA primers that were utilized for cDNA synthesis. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products of a 487 bp. and approximately 500 bp DNA fragments were amplified from nucleic acid extracts of PLRV-infected tissue and strawberry mild yellow-edge (SMYE) diseased strawberry tissue, respectively. The amplified DNA fragments were further differentiated by hybridization analysis with a CDNA probe for the coat protein gene of PLRV and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. These results suggest that a luteovirus is associated with the SMYE disease.
