  • Effect of lip shape on the hole flangeability of high strength steel sheets is investigated. Circular plates of various hole sizes are tested and the variation of lip length as well as the variation of thickness on the sectional views of the finished lip were studied. The conventional hole flanging process is limited to a certain limit hole diameter below which failure will ensue during the hole expansion. The intention of this work is to examine the effect of lip shape on the flangeability of TRIP steel and Ferrite-Bainite duplex steel and find out major parameters which can affect flanging shape of high strength hot rolled steels. Over the ranges of conditions investigated, the minimum hole diameter of F+B steel is better than TRIP steel. while, the lip-shape accuracy of TRIP steel is better than that of F+B steel. although the tensile strength and elongation of %P steel are superior than those of Ferrite-Bainite duplex steel, the flangeability is found to be not so strongly sensitive to the tensile properties but sensitive to displacement on the circumferential direction of hole edge.

  • The drawbead is one of the most important factors in sheet metal forming for automotive parts. So clarifying the friction characteristics between sheets and drawbead is essential to improve the formability of sheet metal. Therefore in this study, drawbead friction test was performed at various panels(cold rolled steel sheets, galvanized steel sheets, electrogalvanized coating steel sheets, electrogalvanized Zn-Fe alloy steel sheets and aluminum alloy steel sheets). Circular shape bead has been used for the test. The results show that friction and drawing characteristics were mainly influenced by the nature of zinc coating.

  • In order to prevent shape defects such as fluting and stretcher strains during press forming of aged low carbon steel sheets, roller leveling conditions for reducing yield point elongation were studied. Yield point elongations of leveled sheets were determined as a function of leveling, which is defined as the plastic fraction or the ratio of plastically deformed part in sheet thickness section to the whole thickness of the sheet. By adjusting this plastic fraction during leveling to more than 78%, yield point elongation in the leveled sheets was reduced so no fluting occurred during subsequent tangential bending. Stretcher strains can be avoided by leveling the sheet to an 84% plastic fraction condition.

  • Many parameters influence the frictional behavior of steel sheet during stamping. The contact pressure between a die and a sheet during stamping is one of them. Thus, this parameter is investigated for high strength steel (HSS) sheets, which are widely used for auto body panels due to their potential for weight reduction. Since HSS extend the limits of contact pressure for mild steel, the effect of this parameter on friction cannot be ignored. To investigate the influence of contact pressure on the frictional behavior of steel sheets, a flat type of friction test was conducted on three different steel sheets under various contact pressures. For bare steel sheets, the curve representing the relationship between contact pressure and friction coefficient exhibits a U shape. Coated steel sheets show a similar tendency except at low contact pressure. For these materials, when the contact pressure is very low, the friction coefficient slightly increases with pressure before it starts to decrease. The test results show that the effect of contact pressure on frictional behavior of steel sheet is not negligible even for contact pressures that are lower than the strength of HSS sheet.

  • The shape of cold rolled steel sheets is the degree of flatness, and the flatter, the better. Because undesirable strip shapes of cold rolled steel sheets can affect not only visible problem but also automatic working process in customer's lines, the requirement of the customers is more and more stringent. So we usually used the tension leveler to make high quality of strip flatness. For the improvement of the quality of strip flatness, this report developed three-dimensional FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation model, and analysis about the strain and stress distribution of strip in the tension leveling process.

  • Sheet metal forming processes induce residual stress in the final product due to plastic deformation. The residual stress leads to elastic recovery of the formed part called springback, which causes shape errors in the final product. This error is a serious issue, especially for high strength steels, which are widely used in auto-body structures. Therefore, the evaluation of the amount of springback becomes critical for high strength steels. This paper investigates the springback behavior of DP780 steel sheets after the U-bending process using the geometry of the standard U-shape tool from the NUMISHEET'93 benchmark problem. The amounts of springback were measured as a function of the intrusion direction, forming speed and blank holding force.

  • An experimental study was performed on the yLRC composite column. Its external surface was manufactured with y-shape steel sheets and L-shape steel angles, and concrete was poured inside in the field. This composite column has improved the section capacity due to the composite action of steel and concrete, and provides good efficiency in reducing the terms of construction works because of its abridged formworks. The stub column specimens (three small and three large specimens) were tested through concentrical axial loading, and the effect of the width-to-thickness ratio of the steel angle on the column axial strength was examined. The axial strength and behavior of the composite columns were analyzed, and a formula for predicting the axial load capacity was proposed.

  • Press formabilities of aluminum sheets for automobile body were investigated. Plane strain stretching test (called RIST-PSST), cupping test and U bending test were performed to assess the press formability of aluminum sheets respectively. The results showed that aluminum sheets are generally inferior to cold-rolled steel sheet of deep drawing quality (CSP3N) in press formability. The limiting punch height (LPH) and limiting plane strain (FLCo) of aluminum sheets are 50%-70% level compared to that of CSP3N. Moreover, the limiting drawing ratios(LDR) of aluminum sheets are ranged between 1.95 and 2.1. The poor press formability of aluminum sheets is responsible for low values of total elongation and plastic anisotropy parameter in tensile characteristic. The shape fixability of aluminum sheets evaluated in U bending test is very poor due to its low elastic modulus compared to CSP3N.

Because undesirable strip shapes of cold rolled steel sheets can affect not only visible problem but also automatic working process in customer's lines, the requirement of the customers is more and more stringent. So we usually used the tension leveler to make high quality of strip flatness. For the improvement of the quality of strip flatness, this report developed three- dimensional FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation model, and analysis about the strain and stress distribution of strip in the tension leveling process. The numerical study can be summarized as follows. (1) If we pass the edge wave material (steepness: $1.0\%$) that the stress-difference between the strip center and the edge is 5.2kgf through tension leveler. the stress-difference is decreased 0.45kgf and the steepness is improved to $0.29\%$. (2) If the Intermesh is increased from 6mm to 7mm, the steepness is improved from $0.294\%$ to $0.268\%$. (3) If the initial steepness is decreased form $1.0\%$ to $0.75\%$, the final steepness is improved from $0.294\%$ to $0.263\%$. We know that more increased intermesh and lower initial steepness make the final steepness improved.

  • Laser forming is an advanced process in sheet metal forming in which a laser heat source is used to shape the metal sheet. This is a new manufacturing technique that forms the metal sheet only by a thermal stress. Analyses of the temperature and stress fields are very important to identify the deformation mechanism in laser forming. In this paper, temperature distributions and deformation behaviors of DP980 steel sheets are investigated numerically and experimentally. FE simulations are first conducted to evaluate the response of a square sheet in bending. The effects of process parameters such as laser power and scanning speed are then analyzed numerically and experimentally. It is observed that experimental and numerical results are in good agreement. These results provide a relationship between the line energy and the angles for laser bending of DP980 steel sheets.
