Prunus sargentii of Rosaceae familiy, has been reported to have radical scavenging activity and anti-inflammatory effect. On these facts, this research was conducted to evaluate pharmaceutical activities of the bark extracts P. sargentii. Free radical scavenging activities of fraction (Fr) -5${\sim}$10 isolated from P. sargentii was higher than 80% respectively at 10ppm. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of Fr-5, 9 were about 97, 84%, respectively at 1,000 ppm. Xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect of Fr-9, 10 were about 75, 78%, respectively at 1,000 ppm. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect related to skin-whitening was 72, 68% in Fr-2, 9 isolated from Prunus sargentii R. at 1,000 ppm. Hyaluronidase inhibition activity related to the anti-inflammation effect was 98% for Fr-8 at 500 ppm. Isolation of the methanol soluble fraction from P. sargentii yielded two major phenol compounds, (-)-epicatechin and taxifolin. The structure of the compound was certainly determined by chemical analyses, as well as NMR and Mass spectroscopy. The present study was carried out in a search for new cosmetic material from the bark from P. sargentii. and, (-)-epicatechin and taxifolin were isolated as active principles. So P. sargentii R. methanolic extracts may be used for the cosmetic material.

Two flavonoids, 7-O-methyl-3',4'-didehydroxy quercetin (MDQ) and quercetin, isolated from Chinese propolis, which is the generic name for the resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources, were tested for their antioxidant activity and protective effect against radiation-induced DNA damage in mouse lymphocytes. In antioxidant test, both compounds provided a dose-dependent scavenging effect on DPPH radical and a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation in mouse liver. Quercetin showed stronger scavenging and inhibitory effect than MDQ, and it also provided strong inhibition on superoxide anion radical generated in xanthine-xanthine oxidase system, but there was no inhibitory ability for MDQ. In comet assay using single cell gel electrophoresis, MDQ and quercetin showed a protective effect against DNA damage caused by gamma irradiation. They reduced DNA damage to 54% (p<0.01) and 53% (p<0.01) at 25 $\mu$mol, respectively. These results suggest that free radical scavenging seems to be associated with their catechol form on the B ring, and radioprotection appears to be a likely mechanism of antioxidant activity by these flavonoids.
The relationship of S-thiolation and oxidation of glycogen phosphorylase b and peroxidation of phosphatidyl choline liposome by xanthine oxidase (XOD), 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) hydrochloride (AAPH), and 2,2'-azobis(dimethylvaleronitrile) (AMVN)-generated free radicals was investigated, Glycogen phosphorylase b was S-thiolated in the presence of glutathione and oxidized in the absence of it by XOD, AAPH and AMVN. In XOD-initiated reaction, the rates of S-thiolation and oxidation of phosphorylase were very similar and addition of liposome to the reaction mixture showed little inhibition of the modifications. In AAPH-initiated reaction, the rate of oxidation was higher than that of S-thiolation and addition of liposome increased oxidation of the protein but had no effect on S-thiolation. In AMVN-initiated reaction, S-thiolation was higher than oxidation and addition of liposome increased S-thiolation remarkably but showed no effect on oxidation. The effect of liposome on modifications of protein in AAPH and AMVN reaction seemed to be caused by certain reactive degradation products or intermediates of liposome by free radical attack. Peroxidation of liposome was not observed in XOD-initiated reaction. Liposome was gradually peroxidized by AAPH reaction. The peroxidation was inhibited by addition of GSH and phosphorylase. Peroxidation of liposome by AMVN was extreamly fast, and was not affected by GSH and phosphorylase.
The purpose of this study was to research about the ingredients for anti-oxidation and anti-wrinkle effects of the solvent fractions from Agrimonia pilosa L. hot water (AW) and 70% ethanol (AE) extracts. The electron donating ability of the solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed 84.9, 92.5% in ethyl acetate layer of AW and AE at 1,000 ppm. The superoxide dismutase like activity of solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed 61.8% in ethyl acetate layer of AW extracts and 58.0% in buthanol layer of AE extracts at 1,000 ppm. For anti-wrinkle effect, elastase inhibition effect of the solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed 55.2, 70.1% in ethyl acetate layer of AW and AE extracts at 1,000 ppm. And collagenase inhibition effect of the solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts showed highest inhibition effect as 90.6% in ethyl acetate layer of AW extract and 88.6% in $n$-butyl alcohol layer of AE extract at 1,000 ppm. All these findings suggested that solvent fractions from AW and AE extracts has an anti-oxidation and anti-wrinkle effects.

Biological activities and application of Isodon japonicus H. were investigated. In the physiological activities, the electron donating ability (EDA) was 66.3% in 100 ppm and SOD-like activity was as high as 85.0% in 1,000 ppm with gradual increase. As for the inhibitory effect of xanthine oxidase, it was 70.0% in 1,000 ppm and as low as 40.0% in 500 ppm; also, as for the inhibitory effect of tyrosinase, it was as low as 20.5% below 1,000 ppm. The tyrosinase inhibition effect related to skin whitening function showed 30.0% at 1,000 ppm level or below, indicating a relatively low effect. As for the result of measuring the lipid oxidation, all the concentrations of medical ion treatments showed anti-acidification ability; also, as for the metal ion blocking effects against the lipid oxidation promoting factors $(Fe^{2+}\;and\;Cu^{2+})$, $Fe^{2+}$ was better than $Cu^{2+}$ and all concentrations of medical ion treatments was 60.0% in 100 ppm. Also, the clear zone against various bacteria at 0.5 and 1.0 mg/disc was clearly shown. When it was applied into a normal skin-softener, it was safe, showing its potential as a natural material of cosmetics.
The biological activities of water and ethanol extracts from different fruit parts, such as peel, flesh, and placenta of oriental melon were investigated. The total phenolic concentration of water extract was the highest such as 151.64 ${\mu}g/g$ in the peel, also that of ethanol extract was 224.77 ${\mu}g/g$ in the peel, respectively. The total flavonoid content in the water and ethanol extracts were high such as 45.53 ${\mu}g/g$ and 67.16 ${\mu}g/g$ of peel, respectively. In the physiological activities, DPPH in the water and ethanol extracts were high such as 25.0% and 83.3% of peel in 1% concentration. Extract of peel was higher than those of flesh and placenta. ABTS in the water extracts was 79.2% of peel, 57.6% of flesh and 74.0% of placenta in 1% concentration. Ethanol extracts was 99.9% of peel, 52.1% of flesh and 41.2% of placenta in 1% concentration. In addition, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity and ${\alpha}$-Glucosidase inhibition activity of the peel of water and ethanol extracts appeared to be higher than those of placenta and flesh. This study showed that the antioxidant and ${\alpha}$-Glucosidase inhibition activity of peel extracts were higher than those of placenta and flesh. Also, the antimicrobial effect of ethanol extract from different fruit parts was shown only on Streptococcus agalactiae.

We investigated the antioxidant activities such as DPPH radical scavenging capacity, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, and superoxide radical scavenging capacity of the aqueous EtOH extract and its solvent fractions of Artemisia scoparia. The ethyl acetate fraction showed high antioxidant activity, compared to positive controls such as ascorbic acid, butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA), trolox, and allopurinol in these assay systems. Moreover, we examined the inhibitory effect of solvent fractions of A. scoparia on the production of pro-inflammatory factors that the nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin E2 $(PGE_2)$ production activated with LPS $(1{\mu}g/ml)$ in murine macrophage cell line RAW264.7. The amounts of protein levels were determined by immunoblottting. Tn the sequential fractions of hexane and dichloromethane inhibited the NO and $PGE_2$ production and the protein level of iNOS and COX-2. These results suggest that A. scoparia may have anti-inflammatory activity through the antioxidant activity and inhibition of pro-inflammatory factors.
This study was carried out to investigate the cosmeceutical activities of Persicae semen. Cosmeceutical activities include anti-oxidant, tyrosinase inhibition effects and nitrite scavenging ability. The Persicae semen was divided into three parts, Bean of Persicae semen (BPS), Shell of Persicae semen (SPS) and Nibs of Persicae semen (NPS). In the electron donating ability test, 1,000ppm of water extract from BPS showed an effect of 89%, while 1,000 ppm of ethanol extract from SPS showed an effect of 87%. These results are higher compared to those of BHA at the equal concentration. We were able to get an effect of 98% from all of Persicae semen ethanol extract of 10,000 ppm in the tyrosinase inhibition test. Nitrite scavenging ability test, ethanol extract from BPS was decreasing to 96% by addition of 1,000ppm. According to these results, we find that Persicae semen applicable to advanced material for cosmetics. From the above results, it was confirmed that Persicae semen could be used in functional cosmetics.

As a novel anti-wrinkle agent, 3,9-diferuloyl-6-oxopterocarpen (Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$) has been synthesized and its anti-aging effects have been investigated. In the present study, to investigate the relationship between aging and Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$, we examined its effect on scavenging activities of radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), in vitro inhibition activity of matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP) and expression of UVA-induced MMPs in human dermal fibroblasts (HDF). Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$ was found to show activities of scavenging radicals and ROS with the $IC_{50}$/ values of 0.2 mM and 0.95 mM against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and superoxide radicals, respectively, in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system. Fluorometric assays for the proteolytic activities of MMP-l (collagenase) were performed using fluorescent collagen substrates. Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$ inhibited the activities of MMP-l in a dose-dependent manner and the $IC_{50}$/ values calculated from semi-log plots were 0.025 mM. Also, UVA induced MMP-1 expression was reduced 85% by treatment with Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$ at 0.8 uM, which was reduced dose-dependent manner. The results of clinical study showed that 4.8 mM Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$ treated group reduced wrinkle significantly compared with placebo treated group (P 〈 0.05). Taken together, these result suggest that Tensolin-F$^{(R)}$ act as an anti-wrinkle agent by taking effects to antioxidation and reducing UVA-induced MMP-l production.-l production.
