  • Recently, the applications of Internet of Things (IoTs) are growing rapidly. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) becomes an emerging technology to provide the low power wireless connectivity for IoTs. The IPv6 over low-power wireless personal area networks (6LoWPAN) has been proposed by IETF, which gives each WSN device an IPv6 address to connect with the Internet. The transmission congestion in IoTs could be a problem when a large numbers of sensors are deployed in the field. Therefore, it is important to consider whether the WSN devices have be completely integrated into the Internet with proper quality of service (QoS) requirements. The Software Defined Network (SDN) is a new architecture of network decoupling the data and control planes, and using the logical centralized control to manage the forwarding issues in large-scale networks. In this research, the SDN-based 6LoWPAN Border Router (6LBR) is proposed to integrate the transmission from WSNs to Internet. The proposed SDN-based 6LBR communicating between WSNs and the Internet will bring forward the requirements of end-to-end QoS with bandwidth guarantee. Based on our experimental results, we have observed that the selected 6LoWPAN traffic flows achieve lower packet loss rate in the Internet. Therefore, the 6LoWPAN traffic flows classified by SDN-based 6LBR can be reserved for the required bandwidth in the Internet to meet the QoS requirements.

  • A low-cost wireless sensor network (WSN) solution with highly expandable super and simple nodes was developed. The super node was designed as a sensing unit as well as a receiving terminal with low energy consumption. The simple node was designed to serve as a cheaper alternative for large-scale deployment. A 12-bit ADC inputs and DAC outputs were reserved for sensor boards to ease the sensing integration. Vibration and thermal field tests of the Chi-Lu Bridge were conducted to evaluate the WSN's performance. Integral acceleration, temperature and tilt sensing modules were constructed to simplify the task of long-term environmental monitoring on this bridge, while a star topology was used to avoid collisions and reduce power consumption. We showed that, given sufficient power and additional power amplifier, the WSN can successfully be active for more than 7 days and satisfy the half bridge 120-meter transmission requirement. The time and frequency responses of cables shocked by external force and temperature variations around cables in one day were recorded and analyzed. Finally, guidelines on power characterization of the WSN platform and selection of acceleration sensors for structural health monitoring applications were given.

  • WSN, or Wireless Sensor Network, consists of a multitude of inexpensive micro-sensors. Because the batteries in sensor nodes can not be replaced once they are deployed, the life of a WSN is absolutely determined by the batteries. So, energy efficiency of a network is a critical factor for long-life operation. LEACH protocol which divides WSN into two groups is a typical routing protocol based on the clustering scheme for the efficient use of limited energy. It is composed of round units which are separated into set-up and steady state. In this paper we propose a power saving scheme to minimize set-up phase itself and to involve a data comparison algorithm. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme in comparison with original LEACH protocol. Simulation results validate our scheme has better performance in terms of the number of alive nodes as time evolves and average energy dissipated.

  • Recently, Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is emerged as a simple yet powerful optimization algorithm for routing and load-balancing of both wired and wireless networks. However, there are few researches trying to adopt ACO to enhance routing performance in WSN owing to difficulties in applying ACO to WSN because of stagnation effect. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient path selection algorithm based on ACO for WSN. The algorithm is not by simply applying ACO to routing algorithm but by introducing a mechanism to alleviate the influence of stagnation. By the simulation result, the proposed algorithm shows better performance in data propagation delay and energy efficiency over Directed Diffusion which is one of the outstanding schemes in multi-hop flat routing protocols for WSN. Moreover, we checked that the proposed algorithm is able to mitigate stagnation effect than simple ACO adoption to WSN.

  • WBSN (Wireless Body Sensor Network), also called WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) generally, is a kind of WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) applications, which is composed of the various sensor nodes residing in human body embodied or in wearable way. The measured data at each sensor node in WBSN requires being synchronized at sink node for exact analysis for status of human body, which is like WSN. Although many time synchronization protocols for WSN has been already developed, they are not appropriate to WBSN. In this paper, a new time synchronization protocol for WBSN considering the characteristics of WBSN is proposed. The proposed scheme is not only simple, but also consumes less power, leading to increasing network life time. We will show that the proposed scheme is appropriate to WBSN by evaluating its performance by simulation.

  • WSN is composed of a lot of small sensors with the limited hardware resources. In WSN, at the initial stage, sensor nodes are randomly deployed over the region of interest, and self-configure the clustered networks by grouping a bunch of sensor nodes and selecting a cluster header among them. Specially, in Mobile-WSN environment, in which the administrator's intervention is restricted, the self-configuration capability is essential to establish a power-conservative Mobile-WSN which provides broad sensing coverage and communication coverage. In this paper, we propose a self-configuration routing protocol for Mobile-WSN, which consists of step-wise novel protocols for initial deployment, effective joining and removal of sensor nodes, which result in reducing overall power consumption, and extending the lifetime of network.

  • Recently, as IT technology and the ubiquitous environment have diffused, the application of these techniques are being attempted in the field of traffic operations and management. Therefore, it is necessary to develop data collection systems and signal control strategies that are suitable in the ubiquitous environment and that will improve efficiency and safety of signalized intersections. The authors conducted a study on the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) signal control strategy using a wireless communication network between individual vehicles and a signal-control system and full actuated signal control technique to propose a new signal control strategy in the ubiquitous environment. The WSN was defined to evaluate the algorithm used with PARAMICS API simulation. The simulation produced results that the WSN signal control is more effective than other signal control methods. The WSN signal control could reduce vehicle delay time to a maximum of 64% in comparison with other signal control methods in low and near saturation flow conditions.

  • To establish the equitable distribution of total energy load, a representative cluster based routing protocol LEACH selects cluster heads randomly in accordance with the pre-determined probability every round. But because the current energy level of sensor nodes is not considered, if a sensor node which has little residual energy is elected as a cluster head, it can not live to fulfil the role of cluster head which has big energy load. As a result, the first time of death of a node is quickened and the service quality of WSN gets worse. In this regard we propose a new routing method that, by considering the current energy of a cluster head and the distance between cluster heads and a base station, selects the sub cluster head for saving the energy of a cluster head. Simulation results show that the first time of death of a node prolongs, more data arrive at the base station and the service quality of WSN improves.

  • Wireless sensor network (WSN) technology has been implemented using commercial off-the-shelf microcontrollers (MCUs), In this paper, we propose a simulation environment to realize the physical evaluation of FPGA-based node by considering vertically cross-layered WSN in terms of physical node device and network interconnection perspective. The proposed simulation framework emulates the physical FPGA-based sensor nodes to interoperate with the NS3 through the runtime infrastructure (RTI). For the emulation and interoperation of FPGA-based nodes, we extend a vendor-providing FPGA design tool from the host computer and a script to execute the interoperation procedures. The standalone NS-3 is also revised to perform interoperation through the RTI. To resolve the different time-advance mechanisms between the FPGA emulation and event-driven NS3 simulation, the pre-simulation technique is applied to the proposed environment. The proposed environment is applied to IEEE 802.15.4-based low-rate, wireless personal area network communication.

  • WSN is a wirelessly configured network of sensor nodes with limited power such as batteries. If the sensor node's battery is exhausted, the node is no longer available. Therefore, if the network is to be used for a long time, energy consumption should be minimized. There are many Wireless Sensor Network Protocols to improve energy efficiency, including Cluster-based and chain-based Protocols. Cluster-based Protocols elect Cluster Heads and divide sensor field into Clusters. The Cluster Head collects the data in the Cluster and transmits it to the Base Station. In the case of nodes elected as Cluster Heads, there is a problem of energy consumption. The chain-based Protocol links sensor nodes in a chain and finally transmits all data to the Base Station. In this paper, we intend to increase the network lifetime by using a chain to reduce the energy consumption of the Cluster Head in the Cluster-based Protocol, LEACH Protocol.
