  • This study aims to examine how motivational constructs are interrelated with social, context-specific factors and, as a result, contribute to L2 writing achievement within the framework of self-determination theory. The data consisted of 67 Korean college students' questionnaire responses, final scores in an on-offline blended writing course, and qualitative interviews with 5 students. In the descriptive and the correlation analyses, the participants' extrinsic motivation was found higher than intrinsic motivation, with low amotivation. Among social factors, immersion environment, foreign instructor, and peer comparison marked high scores, whereas Korean instructor and online material gained low scores. Those contextual factors were interrelated with each other, such that the immersion factor correlated significantly with Korean instructor and peer comparison. Extrinsic and intrinsic motivational subscales engendered strong correlations with the high-scored social factors, i.e., immersion, foreign instructor, and peer comparison, which were also closely interrelated with L2 writing achievement. The findings illuminate intricate workings of motivation in its effects on L2 achievement and corroborate the roles of contextual factors. The effect of motivational subscales on achievement may be valid through interplay with some social factors. The dynamics of motivation is discussed for pedagogical applications.

  • Objective : The purpose of this research is to choose scissoring, handling chopsticks, wearing a jacket with buttons as a significant subject in order to understand relations between writing ability of a preschool child and functional achievement ability. Methods : The subjects are 66 preschool children under the age of 5. The research has conducted for 1 week by using writing test, scissoring, handling chopsticks, wearing a jacket with buttons as an indicator of valuation. We collected statistics by using program called SPSS WIN 14.0 for the process of analysis. Results : The score of writing ability which is one of the common characteristic of subject has a significant difference in terms of statistics according to the gender. the score of girls are higher($13.33{\pm}2.55$) than boys($11.92{\pm}2.52$). Writing ability has a significant relativity with the achievement ability of scissoring(r=0.244, p=0.048),handling chopsticks(r=0.403, p=0.001), achievement ability in terms of statistics. Conclusion : A significant difference between writing ability according common characteristics of children is showed based on the gender. writing ability has a significant relativity with the achievement ability of scissoring, handling chopsticks, achievement ability.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect on academic achievement and science-related affective domain of elementary students though science journal writing about the units of Science textbook of the first semester of the sixth grade. The results indicate that science-journal writing has influenced the students positively in the academic achievement of a lower group's academic achievements, in science related attitudes, 'voluntariness' and 'cooperation', in science learning motives, 'self-satisfaction for science', 'superficial strategies for science', and 'expectation for science', in fear level for science subjects, its lower fear class, 'experiment performance'. A middle group was revealed to have more positive improvement in 'cooperation' and 'perseverance', both of which were lower categories of science related attitudes, and as subgrade of science learning motives, 'self-efficiency for science' and 'expectation for science' stood out. For fear level for science subjects, the lower group gained distinctive results from 'science evaluation'.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of science writing activities on the students' science-related attitude, motivation for learning science, and academic achievement. One hundred and twenty seven second graders of a middle school located in Gyeonggi province participated in this study. The experimental group performed science writing activities, while the comparative group performed problem solving activities at the end of the regular science lessons over 30 class hours. For the students' science-related attitude and motivation for learning science, TOSRA, PALS, and MSLQ were used with some modification and supplementation. For the students' academic achievement, scores on science examinations were used. The results of this study are as follows: First, the test of the science-related attitude showed that science writing activities have positive effects on the cultivation of sciencerelated attitude, as for the sub-factors, 'attitude towards scientific inquiry,' 'pleasure of science lessons,' and 'active attitude towards science'(p<.05). Second, the test of motivation for learning science showed that the science writing activities had positive effect on the improvement in students' motivation, as for the sub-factors, 'difference in values on task' and 'self-efficacy'(p<.05). Third, science writing activities are effective on improvement in the students' academic achievement(p<.05), especially on the high-level achievement group.

  • The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach is described as an immersive argument-based science inquiry focusing particularly on learning through epistemic practices. In the literature, several previous studies indicate how academic achievement is positively influenced by the SWH. In addition to these previous studies, several meta-syntheses of qualitative data have been conducted on this particular topic. With these literatures in mind, a quantitative meta-analysis was conducted with ten studies (N = 724) to examine the effectiveness of the SWH on student achievement in Turkey. To present a thoroughly detailed report, this study also examined the following moderators: grade level, subject area, school location, intervention length, and report source. Overall, this study found that in Turkey, the SWH classrooms performed better in academic achievement tests than traditional lecture-based classrooms. Additionally, the SWH is more likely to be effective regardless of grade levels, subject areas, and school locations.
