  • This study was carried out to investigate the types of health documents for nurses, the content of informations in the documents, and writing behaviors of occupational health nurses. Health documents were collected from 7 nurses who were working in 7 group occupational health agencies (GOHA) located at Seoul and Inchon area in Korea. The collected health documents written in January to June 1999 were analyzed, and revealed the following results. 1) The occupational health nurses were using 9 to 18 different types of health documents. The contents of the documents were considered quite similar to each other with slightly different headings and items to record. Among different types of health documents. Health Management Card for Workplace', Nursing performance sheet and Workplace environmental checklist were in common among nurses and were used for content analysis. 2) The 'Health Management Card for Workplace' was the only formal sheet of small-scale-enterprises (SSE) for health management, in which health and safety related information was recorded. The information on nursing services were recorded on the Nursing performance sheet, which has slightly different names on each type with similar contents. The Workplace environment checklist was for the information on general work environment management and mainly status of workplace hygiene. This checklist is to be used by or with nurses among the 3 types health professional team such as doctor, hygienist, and nurse, but it seemed not being used frequently by nurses. 3) Analysis on recording tendencies of nurses revealed that the writing styles of occupational health nurses were associated with 'memo' using a few number of words and short sentences. The amount of information by this kind of recording style was considered not enough for health management situation. The possible reasons for nurses to use this writing style might be insufficient time for recording and improper designed format of health documents. Because nurses working in SSE spend more time on the roads to visit workplaces, nurses may not found enough time for recording properly within their working time. In addition, the health records were designed to focus on the frequency of nurse's performance in certain types of work rather than on the method they used to deal with health problems. In conclusion, this study suggests that some steps are necessary to develop health documents and recording system which is appropriate to occupational health nurses. The educational need for nurses on appropriate recording behavior is also recommended.

  • Balanced intake of appropriate nutrients is the key to sustaining and promoting health as well as preventing and treating diseases. It is not always easy, however, to take balanced nutrition and various related factors must be taken into consideration. This report provides a summary of studies that have examined the nutrient intakes of Japanese middle-aged men and the relationship of this intake to drinking, job-related separation from families, and health practices. The alcohol consumption of Japanese middle-aged men has more than tripled in the last forty years. When nutrient intake was examined in relation to alcohol consumption, it was discovered that the maximum acceptable alcohol consumption was approximately 23 grams (about two drinks) of pure alcohol, provided the level of nutrient intake for drinkers was equal to that of non-drinkers. The alcohol energy ratio was approximately 5%. It was also discovered that middle-aged men's eating habits deteriorate when they relocate to new posts without their families and live by themselves. Compared to those living with their families, a higher proportion of those living alone have unfavorable eating habits including skipping breakfast or lunch, having a late lunch, and eating and drinking after dinner until bedtime. When Breslow's seven health practices, nutrient intake, and consumption weight by food group were examined, it was discovered that the group that had many beneficial eating and living habits consumed plenty of legume, pulses, fruit, green yellow vegetables and milk products. Their intake of vitamins and minerals was high and the results of a physical examination proved to be excellent. According to nutrition surveys conducted in Japan, China, the United Kingdom and the United States using a 24-hour recall method with common protocols and strict controls to ensure high levels of accuracy and cross-study validity, the Japanese had the highest cholesterol intake and the lowest dietary fiber intake among the four countries. Also, the alcohol energy ratio of the Japanese exceeded 8%, the highest among the four countries, while their intake of magnesium and iron was the lowest These results indicate that it is necessary to enhance nutritional education for middle-aged men and to reinforce the social environments in which they live and work in order to promote proper diet and nutrition in Japan. • There has been an increase in the number of female doctors worldwide. Women now represent half of all medical students, with almost the same numbers of men and women becoming physicians. There is a pool of talented women in our midst, and it is our responsibility as leaders to find those individuals and groom them for progress. However, residency training and academic education still resemble the historical model when there were few women in medicine. Gender differences in medical specialty choices can cause a maldistribution of doctors by specialty and geographical area, which could cause significant problems at the national health care system level. Major challenges facing female physicians include gender discrimination and sexual harassment, and work/family conflicts. Women are largely under-represented in academic medicine and experience discrimination in the academic environments. Recent issues about related to the "feminization of medicine" raise important questions forabout how academic medicine deals with gender issues. To better accommodate the needs of female doctors and ensure that they will have successful careers, structural and cultural changes to medical educations are needed.

  • Objectives: After the MSDS submission and non-disclosure review system was introduced in January 2021, there were compliance difficulties in the field. Accordingly, for the establishment of the MSDS system, the government intends to investigate what has been improved and what urgently needs to be improved in the future, and to suggest detailed improvement plans. Methods: The background and problems of urgent difficulties in the field handling chemicals were investigated, and realistic improvement plans were derived through review of other laws related to the MSDS system and overseas cases. Results: In order to guarantee the safety of the public while at the same time promoting corporate R&D, it is necessary to alleviate the non-disclosure screening system for chemical substances for R&D, and to improve the irrationality of failing to implement the non-disclosure screening system due to information on unclassified substances being circulated. For this reason, it seems necessary to ease the requirement to submit all ingredients. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen punishment to raise awareness so that health problems do not occur due to the harmfulness and danger of hidden substances among workers who handle chemical substances and downstream users due to false descriptions in MSDS. Conclusions: All members of our society, including chemical manufacturers/importers and handling companies, academia, civil society, and the government, each subject of chemicals, should take an interest in the entire process from production to disposal of chemicals and work together to prevent harm to the public.
