고속도로 공사구간에서의 차종별 승용차환산계수 (Passenger Car Equivalents of Various Vehicle Types on Expressway Work Zones)

  • The objective of this paper is to estimate the PCE(Passenger Car Equivalents) of various vehicle types on expressway work zones. Headway samples of 5,359 vehicles were collected in 6 work zones in the Kyungbu Expressway between September and November of 1995. Average headways of 8 vehicle types based on the vehicle classification method of the Department of Construction and Transportation were calculated. A statistical test of effects of the types of the preceding vehicles were performed for the average headways between a vehicle type preceded by other vehicle types. The results show that the effects of the type of preceding vehicles are significant (exceeded 5% and 10% significance levels) and the PCEs of heavy vehicles on expressway work zones are higher than that of basic expressway section. Therefore, different adjustment factors should be applied for heavy vehicles in estimating saturation flow rates of expressway work zones. The study also derives an equation to determine PCEs of these vehicle types.

Framework to Compute Vehicle Emission Costs Associated with Work Zones

  • Active construction work zones will result in longer travel time and/or longer travel distances for road users because of reduced speed limits and/or detours. This results in increased fuel consumption and increased emissions of harmful gases such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Sulfur Oxides (SOx), which causes discomfort to the environment and road users around the work zone. The impact of such emissions should be considered while designing work zones or determining the number of days the roadway will be allowed to be closed partially or fully. This study develops a methodology to compute additional road user costs associated with such work zones. To achieve this goal, a) an extensive literature review is conducted, b) a framework to compute emission cost is developed, c) emission rates are computed for all counties (95) of the state of Tennessee, and d) a case study is conducted to demonstrate the use of the framework to estimate the additional impact of emission because of the work zone. For the case study conducted, the emission cost was computed to be $10,653.60 for the duration of the project. State DOTs can account for such road user costs while selecting contractors using A+B bidding. Accounting for such impact of emission will also indicate the agency's willingness to consider sustainability as a part of the business practices.

  • 최근 도로의 유지관리 개념의 중요성이 대두되면서 도로 자체의 유지보수 확장이나 도로선형 개량 등 도로상에서 각종 공사의 빈도가 증가하고 있다. 특히 고속으로 주행하는 고속도로 상에서 도로점용공사로 인하여 차로가 감소되는 구간은 교통효율과 사고 위험도 측면에서 체계적이고 합리적인 도로점용공사가 필요하지만, 국내의 도로 특성을 반영한 공사구간 도로상에서의 교통사고 측면의 연구가 부족하여 외국의 사례를 적용하고 있는데, 외국은 국가의 면적, 도로의 사정, 국민들의 의식수준 등 여러 가지 상황이 우리나라와 상이하여 외국의 사례를 그대로 적용했을 때에는 실제적으로 우리나라 도로현황과 일치하지 않는 경우가 대부분이다. 이에 고속도로 23개 노선을 중심으로 2003년부터 2005년까지 3년동안 교통통제가 이루어진 공사구간에서 발생한 교통사고를 조사하고 이 공사구간에서 발생하는 교통사고의 특성을 사고유형별, 사고심각도별, 공사유형별, 원인별, 사고 발생경향별, 그리고 전체 고속도로상의 교통사고와의 비교를 통해서 알아보고자 한다. 또한 이를 통해서 보다 구체적이고 세부적인 공사구간 통제지침의 필요성을 제시하고자 한다.

Construction Workers' Sensation-Seeking and Inattentiveness to Warning Alarms from Construction Vehicles

  • In road work zones, pedestrian workers' habituated inattention to warning alarms from construction vehicles can lead to fatal accidents. Previous studies have theorized that human factors such as personality traits may affect workers' inattentiveness to workplace hazards. However, there has been no study that directly examined how road construction workers' personality traits affect their attention to warning alarms within a work zone and the likelihood of engagement in a struck-by accident. This study examines how workers' sensation-seeking (especially boredom susceptibility) is related to inattention to warning alarms while performing a task in road work zones. An experiment with actual road construction workers was conducted using a virtual road construction environment. Workers' attention to repeatedly presented warning alarms was measured using eye-tracking sensors. In response to workers' frequent inattentive behaviors, a virtual accident was simulated. Results revealed a significant association between boredom susceptibility and workers' engagement in the virtual accident, a consequence of inattentiveness to warning alarms. The findings suggest that workers' personality traits predispose them to tune out warning alarms and become vulnerable to accidents in road work zones. The findings of this study can be used to develop targeted interventions aimed at preventing workers' inattention to repeatedly exposed workplace hazards, thereby contributing to reducing fatal accidents in road work zones.

  • 해안 대수층 내에서 담수와 해수 사이에 형성되는 확산대의 위치와 형태는 많은 변수들에 의하여 영향을 받는다. 현재까지 수행된 많은 연구는 확산대들의 정성적 비교로 국한되었다. 본 연구에서는 정량적 분석을 위하여 확산대 특성(최대 침투 길이, 두께, 성층 정도)을 계량화하고 수치 모형을 이용하여 주요 변수(유속과 확산지수)가 확산대 특성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. 차원해석을 통하여 정리된 실험 결과는 유속과 확산지수가 확산대의 특성에 미치는 영향을 명확히 규명하였다. 유속의 증가는 확산계수를 증가시키기 때문에 확산대가 팽창한다는 일부의 주장과는 달리 확산대는 축소하는 것으로 밝혀졌다.

A Study on Logistical Distribution Management and Safety in Thailand's Highway Work Zone: The case of Logistics Drivers

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the Safety and Logistical Distribution Management system in Thailand's Highway Work Zone based on data from Logistics drivers. Accidents in highway construction zones have caused enormous casualties in Thailand yearly. Statistical data shows evidence of correlation between numbers of accidents and drivers' recklessness. Research design, data, and methodology: In this study, we conducted an in- depth interview with 414 logistics drivers and highway construction workers in Khon Kaen province, Thailand. The data was collected based on 63 questionnaires aiming at capturing factors contributing to the risk of safety and cause of accidents in logistic infrastructures such as Highway work zone. Results: The result reveals two significant factors affecting safety in highway work zone, which includes construction environment and safety management system. Moreover, the result shows that feeling of afraid and confused while driving within the construction zones significantly affecting driver's risk of having an accident. Conclusions: The findings of this study offer that a strategic planning and evaluation of the logistics drivers' satisfaction and construction workers' participation to mitigate highway accidents at construction zones and that drivers' knowledge and perception toward construction safety management plays a significant role in preventing highway accidents at the construction areas.

Effects of Hydraulic Variables on the Formation of Freshwater-Saltwater Transition Zones in Aquifers

  • The location and the shape of a freshwater transition zone in a coastal aquifer are affected by many hydraulic variables. To data most works to determine the effects of these variables are limited to qualitative comparison of transiton zones. In this work characteristics of transition zones are analyzed quantitatively. The investigation is limited to a steady-state transition zones. Three dimensionless variables are defined to represent characteristics of steady-state transition zones. They are maximum introsion length, thickness, and degree of stratification. Effects of principal hydraulic variables (velocity and dispersivity) on these characteristics are studied using a numerical model. Dimensional analysis is used to systematically analyze entire model results. Effects of velocity and dispersivity are seem clearly. From this study, increase in velocity is found to cause shrinkage of transition zones. This observation contradicts claims by some that, because dispersion is proportional to velocity, increase in velocity would cause expansion of transition zones.

도로공사로 인한 부(-)의 편익 반영 및 경제성 분석 (Estimation of Road User Costs Caused by Work Zones and Economic Analysis in the Feasibility Study)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 예비타당성조사에서 수행한 도시부 간선도로 확장공사로 인한 부(-)의 편익을 산정하고 이것이 경제성 평가에 미치는 영향을 분석하는 것이다. 북부간선도로 태릉-구리 간 확장사업의 실제 예비타당성조사 단계에서 통상적인 편익 산출 방법론을 적용하였으며, 공사로 인한 차량운행비용, 통행시간, 교통사고, 환경비용의 부(-)의 편익을 산출하였다. 분석 결과, 부(-)의 편익의 적용여부는 사업의 경제적 타당성 평가에 많은 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 공사기간, 공사의 종류, 공사구간 및 교통량 등에 따라 부(-)의 편익에 많은 영향을 주는 감소되는 용량 및 자유속도가 현저하게 다를 수 있으며, 향후에는 이러한 요소와 용량 및 자유속도에 대한 상세한 연구가 필요할 것이다.

  • In the large scale projects, it is difficult to manage every blocks because of the apartment housing project have repetitive shapes and structures. Therefore, it is necessary to divide construction site into work zones and blocks considering site plan, the number of units per each floor, arrangement of blocks, etc. In this study, 20 influencing factors on the grouping of work zones and formwork crew team formation are identified through case study and literature review. Factors are analyzed to determine the degree of influence through experts interviews. A systematic process of crew formation based on work zoning and the considerations by each steps are presented.

주행 시뮬레이션을 활용한 고속도로 이동공사 안전성평가 (Evaluation of Freeway Mobile Work Zone Safety using Driving Simulations)

  • 공사구간으로 진입하는 운전자에게 안전한 회피행동을 유도하는 공사장 안내 및 경고정보가 제공되고 있다. 그러나 이동공사구간의 경우 작업차량 후방에 작업보호차량을 배치하여 운영하고 있지만 안전한 회피행동을 유도하기에는 한계가 있다. 본 연구에서는 이동공사구간에서 운전자의 주행행태분석을 통하여 안전성을 평가하고 능동적인 사고예방대책 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 주행 시뮬레이션 실험을 통해 이동공사와 고정공사 구간에 대한 주행실험 시나리오를 제작하고 운전자의 주행궤적자료 수집하였다. 차로변경 시 종점, 차로변경 수행거리를 도출하여 주행특성분석 자료로 활용하였다. 또한 피실험자가 전방의 이동작업차량을 회피할 때의 주행궤적자료를 수집하여 주행안전성 평가지표인 Safety Distance Index를 산출하였다. 그 결과, 이동공사가 고정공사보다 위험한 주행행태를 나타냈다. 특히 주행차량은 저속으로 이동하는 작업차량을 사전에 인지하지 못하여 차로변경 시점이 늦게 나타나는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 이동공사 시 운전자가 작업보호차량을 사전에 신속히 인지하고 적절한 회피행동을 수행할 수 있도록 경고정보를 제공하는 교통안전 향상 방안의 적극적인 도입이 필요하다.
