Shrink Proofing of Wool Fabrics by Titanium Oxide Photocatalytic Reaction

  • Shrink-proofing processing of wool fabrics is practically carried out by means of oxidation of wool with choline and/or covering of wool surface with resins. But, these are not necessarily environmentally friendly process causing a waste fluid containing organic chlorine compounds. Development of alternative method using more environmentally friendly process is desired. In this study, utilization of titanium oxide, TiO$_2$, photocatalytic reaction for the shrink-proofing of wool has been examined. It was found that the treatment of wool by TiO$_2$ photocatalytic reaction gave good shrink-proofing characteristics to wool fabrics.

  • Glass wool filtration and swim-up method resulted in inreasing to 58.3% and 62.7% of the progressive motility in frozen-thawed boar sperm, compared to 34.2% in the untreated sperm. Glass wool filtration tended to be more successful than swim-up method for the survival sfter incubation of 38.5$^{\circ}C$ for 3h. Sperm recovered by both the swim-up method and the glass wool filtration method were tested in an in vitro fertilization to determine which of the two techniques would yield sperm with high fertilizing capacity.   • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of fiber type, compressional resilience and moisture transport properties of wool and polyester fiber on the heat transfer of insulation nonwovens. The results obtained were as follows: 1) Overall heat transfer of wool nonwoven was slightly higher than that of polyester nonwovens. Warmability of wool nonwoven was lower than that of polyester nonwovens. The radiative heat transfer was in the range of 11~18% of overall heat transfer in polyester nonwovens and 25% in wool nonwoven. 2) As wool nonwoven compressed, overall heat transfer was increased by increasing radiative heat transfer and wamability was decreased due to the poor compressional resilience. 3) Increasing rate of heat transfer by moisture absorption in wool nonwoven was lower than that of polyester nonwovens. Thickness and compressional resilience of wool nonwoven were reduced extremely by moisture absorption.

Dimensional Properties of Low Temperature Plasms and Silicone Treated Wool Fabric

  • Three different silicone polymer systems, such as aminofunctional, epoxyfunctional, and hydrophilic epoxyfunctional silicone polymers, were applied onto plasma pretreated wool fabric to improve the dimensional properties. The results showed that the plasma pretreatment modified the cuticle surface of the wool fiber and increased the reactivity of wool fabric toward silicone polymers. Felting shrinkage of plasma and silicone treated wool fabric was decreased with different level depending on the applied polymer system. Fabric tear strength and hand were adversely affected by plasma treatment, but these properties were favorably restored on polymer application. Therefore, it has been concluded that the combination of plasma and silicone treatments can achieve the improved dimensional stability, and better performance properties of wool fabric. The surface smoothness appearances of treated fabrics were measured using a new evaluation system, which showed good correspondence with the results of KES-FB4 surface tester.

  • This study has been carried out to investigate the differences of compressional properties in various wool fabrics which have different structural conditions in composing ratio of wool fabric, count of material yarn and cloth count of fabric. The result of the study are summarized as follows ; 1. The wool fabrics woven with lower with lower count yarn are superior to those woven with higher count yarn in the property of compression and resiliance of compression. 2. All wool fabrics are superior to polyester/wool blended fabrics in the property of compression and inferior in the linearity. 3. In general as the cloth count of fabrics increases, the percentage of compression decrease and the linearity increases proportionally in wool fabrics.

Dyeing of wool with rosemary extract (로즈마리 추출물의 이용한 모섬유 염색)

  • Dyeing properties of rosemary colorants on wool fabrics were investigated. Reosemary colorants were characterized by UV and FT-IR analysis. Effect of dyeing condition on dye uptake and effect of mordanting on dye uptake, color change of colorfastness were explored. Rosemary colorants showed high affinity to wool fiber and its isotherm adsorption curve was Langmuir type. Therefore, it was considered that ionic bonding was involved in the adsorption of rosemary colorants to wool fiber. Rosemary colarants produced mainly yellowish color on wool fabric. The dyed wool fabrics showed generally high colorfastness except fastness to washing and light. Mordanting did not improve any colorfastness except that Sn mordant improved the light fastness. Bacterial reduction rate was increased up to 100% at 5% dye concentration. Therefore, antimicrobial activity of rosemary extract was confirmed.

Modification of Dyeing Property of Wool Fabrics by UV Irradiation (UV조사에 의한 양모직물의 염색성 개질)

  • Wool fabrics were treated with deep UV for 10 to 30min and then dyed with C.I. Acid Yellow 99, C.I, Acid Red 57 and C.I. Acid Blue 62. FT-IR and XPS have been used to prove the chemical composition of wool fiber surfaces. The mechanical property and colorfastness were also studied. The intencities of the peaks of C=O group at $1700^cm^{-1}$ were increased with increasing irradiation time. Relative $O_{1s},\; N_{1s}\; and\; S_{2p}$ intensities increased considerably and oxygen was incorporated in the form of CO and COO on the fiber surface. The dye uptakes of wool fabrics dyed with three acid dyes were proportional to irradiation times and in inversely proportional to irradiation distances. It was found that the tensile strength of wool fabrics were gradually deteriorated with the UV irradiation times. The colorfastness, such as washing, light and rubbing, of UV irradiated wool fabrics dyed with acid dyes were good.

  • Fabric hand and sensibility must be studied together with the apparel sensibility. This study included 8 wool fabrics and 10 jacket styles to execute experiment their subjective sensibility and to look for the effects of subject's experiences. The wool sensibility changes not with the wool type but also with their appropriate jacket styles. Expert designers evaluated some of the wool and jacket sensibility differently from students did.

Textures and Sensible Images on Structural Properties of Washable Wool and Normal Wool Knit Fabrics (Part II) -Focus on Preferences- (워셔블 울과 노멀 울편성물의 구성특성에 따른 질감 및 감성이미지 (제2보) -구성특성에 따른 선호도를 중심으로-)

  • This study examines the effect of structural properties of F/W wool knit fabrics for woman's knitwear on the preferences for textile designing through analyzing the relationship among the structural properties, mechanical properties, objective hand measurements, and preferences. The 'knit structure' was determined to be the most important parameter in rating preferences, apart from the 'preference for cardigans'. Consumers preferred washable wool to normal wool when comparing a normal wool knit with a washable wool knit on a 'knit structure' factor. Preferred structural properties showed a similar tendency 'preference for fabric' and the 'preference for cardigans', 'preference for sweaters' and 'preference for vests'. The 'sophisticated/feminine' factor showed a correlation with 'fabric preference' and the texture and sensible images had a similar effect on fabric preferences. In the relationship between objective hand measurements and fabric preferences, the KOSHI value had a negative coefficient and the THV value had a positive correlation with fabric preferences. In conclusion, we found a consumer preference for more flexible fabrics.
