Monte Carlo simulation was performed on theoretical models of plywood warp for southern yellow pine plywood originating from the United States. The objective of the investigation was to determine which plywood layers was more warp sensitive to veneers that were manufactured to an undesired thickness. This study found that for a balanced panel (a panel of equal target thickness for each of five layers) manufactured veneers of undesired thickness would experience minimal warp. The veneers of undesired thickness placed in the center of the plywood panel also provided a minimum change of plywood warp properties. The panel warp was very sensitive to surface veneers constructed with undesired thickness. Conversely, this study confirms that monitoring of veneer thickness and proper allocations within the plywood lay-up were critical.
In order to develop the end use of cylindrical laminated veneer lumber (LVL) such as wooden crafts, the water proof-bonding strength, the resistance to abrasion and the surface hardness by painting the surface of LVL were investigated. The study results were as follows; The water proof-bonding strength through 5 cyclic test by boiling in water immersion and drying were favorable without delamination of glue line. Then the formulation of glue was resorcinol resin (100) to hardener of paraformaldehyde (5) by mixed weight percentage. The resistance to abrasion was relatively higher at cross section than tangential section. When tangential section of LVL was painted by UV protection oil, the resistance to abrasion was improved. In case of an cross section of LVL, the higher surface hardness appeared at larch core than radiata pine LVL. Also, in case of an tangential section of LVL, the higher surface hardness appeared at glue line than veneer side.
The selected physical and mechanical properties of non-certificated LVL circulated in domestic lumber market were investigated and compared to relevant standards. The tested LVL passed the moisture content and the soaking delamination rate limit as per domestic (KS) and Japanese standard (JAS). The evaluated mechanical properties were flatwise/edgewise bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), horizontal shear and compressive strength. The 30 mm-thick LVL showed significantly higher bending strength than that of the 25 mm-thick LVL. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) showed same tendency in the results of bending strength. The edgewise bending strength and MOE were higher than that of flatwise bending strength and MOE. The horizontal shear strength values were also showed similar results to bending strength values. The tested results were compared each other and each products were graded according to JAS 701 grade specification. The failure mode of LVL in bending test showed the similar failure mode of solidwood that failed in a simple tension manner (splintery tension). The glue line failure was severe in 25 mm-thick specimens due to concentration of shear stress in layer discontinuity containing small voids and starved glue lines. In horizontal shear strength test, failure mode of LVL showed the typical horizontal shear failure. Compressive specimens failed with fiber crushing in company with apparent delamination that splitted along the length of the specimens. From the results, the complete bonding between lamination and consistency in thin veneer layer were considered as a critical factor in the mechanical properties of LVL. Moreover, the standard test procedure and specification for non-certificated LVL should be required to check the performance of uncertificated materials.
This study was carried out in order to investigate the treatment effect of PEG soln which is a common dimensional stabilizer to green log. sawing panel etc, on bonding product including plywood widely-used in secondary processing unit. The 30% concentration of aqueous PEG soln. with molecular weight of 400, 1.000 and 4,000 were prepared respectively, and also dipping the veneer in the PEG soln. spreading the PEG soln. on veneer and mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive were allowed. Then the ratio of PEG impregnation on veneer, the adhesive strength of plywood were epitomized as follows: The ratio of impregnation by PEG 4,000 at dipping condition was highest. while that by PEG 400 at same condition was lowest. However, the effect of PEG molecular weight on the ratio of impregnation at spreading condition did not occur. 2. The adhesive strength was great in the order of 4,000>400>1,000 in molecular weight of PEG at dipping and spreading conditions. In case of mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive, the adhesive strength was great in the order of 400>1,000>4,000 in molecular weight of PEG. Throughout three treatment conditions, PEG 400 was relatively favourable with about 10kg/$cm^2$ dry strength. 3. The adhesive strength was great 10 the order of spreading >dipping >mixing condition. 4. Although adhesive strength with the 30% concentration of aqueous PEG soln. was decreased by 35% and over, compared to control (non-treatment) adhesive strength, all types of PEG treatment except mixing the PEG soln. in the adhesive exceeded the standard dry strength for common use panel. 7.5kg/$cm^2$. 5. In warm water-proof test, the adhesive strengths by all PEG treatment conditions were less than the standard wet strength, 7.5kg cot, and also delamination of glue line occured mostly in mixing in the PEG soln. in the adhesive condition.
This experiment was executed to investigate the effect of activation of veneer surface by oxidizing agents, hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid, on bonding characteristics of Malas(Homalium foetidum Benth) plywood, in which the effects of these oxidizing agents amount, pretreatment time, and pressing time and temperatue on shear strength of the plywood were examined and discussed. In this research the activation of veneer surface by oxidants was effective in raising shear strength but the difference in shear strength was not observed between hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid treatment. Hydrogen peroxide treatment, however, seemed to be more profitable to industrial application because of its lower concentration and easier handling than nitric acid. The bonding method by lignin-phenol adhesive through surface activation revealed inferior shear strength to phenol- and urea-formaldehyde adhesive but superior water resistance to urea-formaldehyde adhesive and this bonding method, in addition, have the advantage of lower cost compared with phenol-formaldehyde adhesive, Therefore, this bonding method by lignin-phenol adhesive through surface activation seemed to economical in manufacturing of water-resistant wood panel materials in future.

Formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from wood-based panels that have been made using wood particles, wood fiber, wood chips, formaldehyde-based resins and so on. In this study, we examined formaldehyde and total VOCs (TVOC) emission behaviors for plywood overlaid with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard (PL), and two kinds of surface materials (decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil) that were adhered onto the PL that named DPL and PPL. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) was used to overlay the decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil on the plywood with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard by a hot press instrument. The debonding test and accelerated aging test were conducted to assess their mechanical properties. Formaldehyde and TVOC emission concentrations were measured using the FLEC method and a VOC Analyzer, respectively. The debonding test results of PL, DPL and PPL were 1.2, 1.5, and $0.5N/mm^2$, respectively. The surface appearance of the samples were not changed after the accelerated aging test. The PL and DPL exhibited reduced formaldehyde and TVOC emission levels, respectively. In the case of PPL, the VOC value was relatively higher than those of PL and DPL.

The eco-friendly preservatives such as ACQ or CUAZ have been used in landscape architectural facilities these days. In this study, the decay efficacies of ACQ treatments were evaluated according to domestic veneer species, concentration of ACQ, weathering test, adhesive type, and fungus type. In case of veneer species, hinoki cypress and yellow poplar showed the highest and lowest decay resistance, respectively. And the decay resistance appeared to be greater in plywoods bonded by resorcinol resin-bonded plywood and non-weathering treated plywood than polyurethane resin-bonded plywood and weathering treated plywood.
Due to the increase of oil price and the environmental issue such as the emission of volatile organic compounds, the necessity for developing alternative resins of petroleum-based adhesive resins, which have extensively been used for the manufacture of wood-based products, has been speculation since the early 1990. In our study, rapeseed flour (RSF), which is the by-product of bio-diesel produced from rapeseed, were hydrolyzed by enzymes. As a crosslinking agents of the RSF hydrolyzates, phenol-formaldehyde prepolymers (PF) were prepared. The RSF hydrolyzates and PF were mixed to complete the formulation of RSF-based adhesive resins, and the resins were applied to make the laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The physical and mechanical properties of the LVL were measured to examine whether RSF can be used as raw materials of adhesive resins for the fabrication of LVL or not. The average moisture content and soaking delamination rate of the LVL bonded with RSF-based adhesive resins exceeded the minimum requirement of KS standard. Moreover, thermal analysis of the RSF-based resins showed similar tendencies except for the RSF-based adhesive resins formulated with pectinase-hydrolyzed RSF. The bending strengths of the LVL were higher than that of the LVL made with commercial PF resins. These results showed the potential of RSF as a raw material of alternative adhesives for the production of LVL. Further works on the optimal conditions of RSF hydrolysis and spreading characteristics for RSF-based adhesive resins is required to improve the adhesive performance of RSF-based resins.
Since 1990's, a flooring based on plywood has gotten customers' demand. Costs of raw material and production increased because of changed environment of industry. Tropical timber such as Red Meranti (Shorea acuminate) used for raw material of the floor has been depleting beside countries in South Eastern Asia changed species of afforestation. As a result, it gets hard to secure good quality of raw material for plywood. Moreover plywood price is increased suddenly after earthquake in Japan. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) in china has been using for raw material as a countermeasure of changed environment of industry. In this study, possibility of using flooring consisted of Eucalyptus veneer as a core layer was checked by heat transfer experiments. Flooring consisted of Red Meranti was used for comparison. Two factors which impact on heat transfer are a type of density gradient and density difference between Long-grain veneer and Short-grain veneer. Red Meranti samples are 'M' type of density gradient on the other hand Eucalyptus samples are 'W' type of density gradient.
This study was to investigate the adhesion properties of fancy veneer and base panels and formaldehyde emission of wood-based floorings bonded with urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives. We focused on stoichiometric mole ratio of reactive functional groups. The urea-melamine formaldehyde adhesives were made at twelve different formaldehyde/urea-melamine mole ratios. The interlaminated shear strength and formaldehyde emission of wood-based floorings bonded with selected adhesive among these adhesives were examined. The results showed that the bonding properties were high and the formaldehyde emission was low as the adhesive consisted of stoichiometric mole ratio of formaldehyde/urea-melamine. Interlaminated shear strengths of HDF(High Density Fiberboard) flooring were over 14 kgf/cm2 at all mole ratios. At the mole ratio of 1.0, HDF flooring showed low value of formaldehyde emission of 953 mg/L. Interlaminated shear strengths of Plywood flooring were high, 14.02 kgf/cm2 at mole ratio of 1.4. At the mole ratio of 1.0, Plywood flooring showed low value of formaldehyde emission of 0.26 mg/L.
