This study aimed to investigate the anatomical structure and fiber quality of four lesser-used wood species namely Benuang (O. sumatrana), Duabanga (D. moluccana), Pisang Merah (H. hellwigii), and Terap (A. odoratissimus). This study evaluated its suitability for raw material in pulp and paper manufacturing. The anatomical structure was observed macro- and microscopically. Macroscopic structures were observed directly to the wood samples, while microscopic characteristics were observed through microtome specimens. Fiber dimension was measured through macerated specimens and fiber quality was analyzed following the Rachman and Siagian's method. Results showed that these four timber species have similarity in the indistinct growth ring, diffuse porous in a radial pattern, rounded solitary vessel outline, 1 to 3 cells of ray width, deposits within the rays, fiber length, and cell wall thickness. Differences were found on vessel diameter, vessel grouping, vessel frequency, tyloses existence, type of axial parenchyma, and ray height. Based on fiber length and its derived values, the wood fibers of all species studied are suitable for pulp and paper manufacturing. They belong to the II quality class. The produced pulp and paper would have good quality, especially in tensile, folding, and tear strength. To promote their utilization, silviculture aspect of these four species has to be well understood.
In the present paper I described the relations of wood ray indicators such as ray height, ray width, number of rays per $0.25mm^2$, ray spacing and fusiform ray height on the stem of Pinus koraiensis and Larix leptolepis grown at the Experiment Forest of Kangweon National University. The results may be summarized as follows. 1. The number of rays and ray spacing were generally decreased with the increase of ray height on the sample woods. 2. According to the tree species the patterns of varition of ray width with the increase of ray height were different, namely the relation between ray width and ray height showed some positive correlation on Pinus koraiensis and negative on Larix leptolepis. 3. It was recognized that the variation of fusiform ray height due to the increase of ray height indicated two patterns(the increasing, md constant regions) in sample woods. This boundary seemed to appear at six cells of ray height on Pinus koraiensis and ninc cells on Larix leptolepis. 4. The relation between fusiform ray height and number of rays had a negative correlation on Pinus koraiensis, but this tendancy was not obvious on Larix leptolepis. And ray spacing and ray width due to the increase of fusiform ray height were generally decreased. 5. On the whole the values of ray spacing and ray width became gradually larger in proportion to the increase of number of rays. 6. According to the increase of ray spacing the values of ray width also increased gradually. But this tendency was more clear on Pinus koraiensis than larix leptolepis.
This report describes the wood anatomy and 1% safranine solution penetration depth in radial and longitudinal directions of Anthocephalus chinensis belonging to the family Rubiaceae native to Bangladesh. The wood of this species was mostly characterized by diffuse porous, vessel with simple perforation plate, vestured alternate intervessel pittings, relatively medium vessel elements and fiber, and nonseptate fiber with distinctly bordered pits at radial wall. The body ray cell was procumbent with 2 to over 4 rows of upright and square marginal cells. Sometimes, the rays with procumbent, square and upright cells were mixed. Latewood fiber was thin to thick walled while it was very thin walled in earlywood. Axial parenchyma was diffuse, vasicentric, 5-8 cells per parenchyma strand dominantly present. Liquid penetration depth was observed in radial and longitudinal directions at moisture level of 7.42%. Longitudinal penetration was found 6.3 times higher than radial penetration. The initial penetration rate of safranine solution was high, but gradually decreased during the course of time. Different anatomical features were found to be responsible for the variation of safranine solution penetration depth compared to Gmelina arborea.
Despite poorly documented species delimitation and unresolved taxonomic nomenclature, four species of Symplocos (S. coreana, S purnifolia, S sawafutagi, and S. tanakana) have been described in Korea. In this study, we carried a comparative wood anatomy analysis of all four species of Korean Symplocos to understand the wood anatomical variations among them. The results of this study indicated that Korean Symplocos are comparatively indistinguishable in terms of their qualitative wood features, except for exclusively uniseriate rays present in S. purnifolia instead of uniseriate to multiseriate in other three species. Nevertheless, differences are noticed in quantitative wood variables such as the vessel density, vessel size, and ray density. The vessel density of S. purnifolia is more than twice as high as those of S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana. In contrast, the vessel circumference and diameter on both plants of S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana is nearly twice as large as those of S. purnifolia. Symplocos coreana has characteristic intermediacy between these two groups in terms of vessel features and is closer to S. purnifolia in terms of its ray density level. A cluster analysis based on a paired group (unweighted pair-group method with the arithmetic mean, UPGMA) algorithm using the Euclidean similarity index clearly differentiates S. purnifolia from the remaining species, representing the first branch of the phenogram.
This experiment was executed to investigate and compare qualitative and quantitative anatomical features in compression wood, opposite wood, and side wood formed in a bent stem, a straight branch, and an exposed horizontal root of Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora S. et Z.). The respective four discs containing compression wood taken at 20cm interval both in stem and branch as well as a disc containing well developed compression wood from horizontal root were analyzed. Percentage of compression wood and eccentricity showed decreasing tendency with the increasing distance in height direction of stem and length direction of branch. The qualitative anatomical features of compression wood appeared to differ from those of side and opposite wood in very gradual tracheid transition from earlywood to latewood, roundish tracheid shape on cross surface, tracheid distortion at tip on radial surface, existence of intercellular space, and helical cavity in tracheid wall. And the differences in these qualitative features among the compression wood, opposite wood, and side wood became less intensive with the decreasing trends in percentage of compression wood and eccentricity. The quantitative anatomical features in compression wood also appeared to be wider in that respective widths of fusiform and uniseriate ray than those of opposite and side wood, but the heights of fusiform and uniseriate ray in compression wood were smaller than in opposite and side wood. The number of horizontal resin canal(fusiform ray) and uniseriate ray, however, showed no differences among the compression wood, opposite wood, and side wood. And the number of vertical resin canal in unit area, $4{\pi}mm^2$ of compression wood was fewer than that in opposite wood, whereas numerous vertical resin canals contained in a growth ring. These rays of compression wood seemed to be characterized by smaller height and wider width than those of opposite and side wood.
To study the structure of opposite wood in the angiosperms. samples were cut from stems and branchs of 10 spcies growing in Korea. The opposite side was defined as being along a line passing from the most wide annual ring of the tension wood on the upper side to the pith and extrapolated through the opposite side. lateral sides being on the right and left of this line. The stem woods growing almost horizontally were surveyed the structural features of the well-developed opposite wood for the tension wood. In the annual-ring of the well-developed opposite woods. an investigation was made on how the dimension of elements, microfibril angles. and cell wall layers change from tension side to opposite side. The structural characteristics of opposite wood in hardwoods realized in this study are as follows: 1. The vessel diameters increased continuously to ward the opposite side in which the values were maximum. The vessel length also increased toward opposite side. but the rates of increase were smaller than those in the vessel diameters. 2. The wood fiber length were decreased from tension toward opposite side. but the rates of decrement were f1actuated within the sampled species. 3. The microfibril angles had the minimum values on the tension side. then increased steeply toward the opposite side in which the values maximum. 4. In the percentage of elements the vessel elements increased continously at a relative rate from the tension to opposite side, whereas the values of the wood fibers were lower in the opposite than the tension side, but the' variation patterns of rays were not seem distinctly. 5. The component layers of the wood fiber in the opposite woods were very similar to the lateral woods.
This research was carried out to examine the FIR (far-infrared rays) emissivity and emission power of five types of flooring board by the mixing ratio of charcoal and loess, and the physical property of five types of injected flooring board by the amount of mixture. Type D was appeared the most high value of FIR emissivity and emission power. But there was a little difference among the five types of flooring board values. In physical properties, control type flooring board and injected flooring board showed a similar tendency. Among the domestic trees, all of hard wood seems to be used to surface wood for strong hardness flooring board. But a coniferous tree was not.
Anatomical characteristics of the secondary xylem in the roots and the stems of genus Pinus including nine species growing naturally in Korea have been studied to elucidate the structural differences between two organs. The results, comparing the root woods with the stem woods, are as follows; The transition from the early-wood to the late-wood occurs more gradually in the root woods. In the root woods, the bordered pits on the radial wall of tracheid are frequent in the two rows. The spiral thickening on the radial and tangential wall of the tracheid can be seen in the only stem woods of four species such as P. koraiensis, P. rigida, P. rigitaeda and P. banksiana. In the majority of the species studied, the length of the tracheid is longer in the root woods, but in some species such as P. strobus, P. densiflora, P. rigida and P. sylvestris, this length is almost sam ein both organs. The diameter of the tracheid in the root woods is wider. The wall thickness of the tracheid in the early wood is thicker in the root woods, but vice versa in the late woods. More rays per unit area can be seen in the root woods.

Symplocos Jacq. including about 350 species is the sole isolated genus of the family Symplocaceae. Despite poorly documented species delimitation and unresolved taxonomic nomenclature four species of Symplocos (S. coreana, S purnifolia, S sawafutagi, and S. tanakana) have been described in Korea. In this study, we carried the comparative wood anatomy of all the four species of Korean Symplocos to understand the wood anatomical variations within these four species. The result of this study indicated that Korean Symplocos are comparatively indistinguishable in terms of their qualitative wood features except for exclusively uniseriate rays present in S. purnifolia instead of uni- to- multiseriate in other three species. However, discrepancies are observed in quantitative wood variables such as vessel density, vessel size, and ray density. The vessel density of S. purnifolia (highest among the four species) is more than two times higher than the S. sawafutagi (lowest among the four species) and S. tanakana. On the other hand, vessel size is likewise reverse to the vessel number relationships i. e. vessel circumference and diameter in both planes of S. sawafutagi and S. tanakana is almost twice a larger than S. purnifolia. Interestingly, S. coreana remains in between of these two groups in terms of vessel features and closer to S. purnifolia in terms of ray density. The cluster analysis based on the paired group (UPGMA) algorithm using the Euclidean similarity index clearly differentiates S. purnifolia from the rest of the taxa representing the first isolated clade of the tree.
In Korea, a study on the anatomical features of pitch pine (pinus rigida Miller) branch wood through photo-microscopical method was reported in 1972 by Lee. Therefore, as a further study of Lee's on the anatomical features in branch wood of pinus rigida miller that grows in Korea, compression wood, opposite wood, and side wood were selected and treated for the purpose of comparing their structures revealed on cross and radial surface through scanning electron microscope in this study. The obtained results in this study were summarized as follows; 1. The trachied transition from earlywood to late wood is very gradual and the tracheids are nearly regular in both arrangement and size in compression wood but this transition in opposite wood and side wood is abrupt and the tracheids in opposite wood and side wood are less regular than those in compression wood. Also, the annual ring width of opposite wood is narrower than that of compression wood or side wood and the rays revealed on cross surface of side wood are more distinct than compression wood and opposite wood rays. 2. The tracheids of compression wood show roundish trends especially in earlywood but those of opposite wood and side wood show some angular trends. And intercellular space, helical cavity, and spiral check are present in both earlywood and latewood of compression wood but not present in opposite wood and side wood irrespective of earlywood and latewood. 3. The wall thickness of latewood tracheid is similar to that of earlywood tracheid in compression wood whereas the wall thickness of latewood tracheid is by far thicker than that of earlywood tracheid in opposite wood and side wood and the S3 layer of secondary wall is lack in compression wood tracheid unlike opposite wood and side wood tracheid. 4. The tracheids in compression wood are often distorted at their tips unlike those in opposite wood and side wood and the bordered pit in compression wood tracheid is located at the bottom of helical groove unlike that in opposite wood and side wood tracheid. 5. The bordered pits in radial wall of opposite wood and side wood tracheids are oval in shape but those of compression wood tracheids show some modified oval shape. 6. In earlywood of side wood, the small apertures of cross-field pits are roundish triangle to rectangle and the large one are fenestriform through the coalition of two small ones. However, the small apertures of cross-field pits are upright oval and the large ones are procumbent oval shape in earlywood of opposite wood and the apertures of cross-field pits in compression wood are tilted bifacial convex lens shape in earlywood and slit in late wood because of the border on tracheid side.
