Fire performance is the important criterion for evaluating of safety of wood structures which exposed to the standard fire condition. Endurance time and time-to-failure are used as the criteria for fire performance in many countries. Reliability analysis about wood floor system which exposed to fire was carried out as preliminary research for reliability-based design on fire. Analyses were conducted by two methods, numerical analysis method and deterministic method.. They didn't show the difference between two methods. The reliability of floor exposed to fire showed strong dependence on the coefficient of variation of member and did not be influenced by the strength or load of member.
Thermoplastic aceton-formaldehyde resin adhesive was added as a modifier for urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive and its effects on plywood smear strength and wood failure were investigated. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The plywood shear strength and wood failure showed the highest values at $120^{\circ}C$ of hot plate temperature, but the values decreased according to the rise of addition ratio of aceton resin. 2) The variation of molar ratio of aceton resin had no effect on plywood shear strength and wood failure. 3) The plywood bonded by the addition of aceton resin showed lower values than those of urea resin bonding plywoods in shear strength and wood failure. Therefore, aceton resin was inadequate as a modifier of urea resin adhesive.
This study was conducted to evaluate the planar (rolling) shear strength of OSB (oriented strand board) panels and domestic plywood through 5 point bending test method in ASTM D2718 standard. The test specimens were prepared in parallel and perpendicular direction to major axis (along the length of panels) and tested up to failure, and failure modes were also examined. From the test results, rolling shear strength were found to be $1.32{\sim}1.94N/mm^2$ in parallel to major axis, and $1.46{\sim}1.99N/mm^2$ in perpendicular to major axis respectively. Little difference was found between parallel and perpendicular direction of rolling shear strength. There were no statistically significant differences in rolling shear strength between Canadian OSB and domestic plywood in the parallel direction, and between Chilean OSB and domestic plywood in the perpendicular direction. The shear failure was observed in all tested OSB panels, whereas shear failure, glue line delamination, and bending combined with shear failure were observed in the domestic plywood.
This study was conducted to evaluate the tensile properties of metal plate connector for the domestic major softwoods, such as Korean red pine, Korean white pine, and Japanese larch. The maximum tensile load of Korean red pine was 3,612kgf in AA type, it was 1.2 and 1.7 times higher load than that of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. In EA type, it was 2,704kgf, and 1.1 and 1.5 times higher than the loads of Japanese larch and Korean white pine. The failure modes of metal plate connector were metal plate withdrawal, plate tensile failure, and wood shear block failure. The failure mode of Korean red pine connector was tensile failure of plate, that is reason of the high tensile load resistance for metal plate connections in Korean red pine. The mechanical properties of metal plate connector could be predicted by the Foschi model parameter. In the initial stage, the Korean red pine connector was stiffer than the other species. The design values for metal plate connector per tooth was 25, 22, and 15kgf for Korean red pine, Japanese larch, and Korean white pine in AA type and 19, 17, and 13kgf in EA type.
In this study, thick 24mm glulams were composed of thick. 3, 4, 6, 8mm Larch laminas to study that the theoretical analysis and the experimental analysis regarding the location of neutral axis of the glulams were compared, and to study on the effect of location of neutral axis on mechanical properties of glulam. The variation of location of neutral axis after proportional limit(or elastical limit) was studied to offer basic data to make the better composition method of glulam. The result obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The theoretical neutral axis was 0.547 in solid wood, and also 0.547 in glulams because glulams were composed of only Larch laminas. 2. In solid wood, the deviation of the theoretical and the experimental neutral axis location was 0.1%, But in glulams, the deviation from-12.2% to + 7.8% showed nonuniform pattern but no large deviation. Because laminas was only of Larch and so the mechanical properties of laminas were monotonous. 3. The neutral axis exerted no influance on the elasticity of glulam, which meaned that the maximum shear strength in the neutral axis showed no influance on elasticity limit. 4. The only minutely lower elasticities of glulam than that of solid wood were shown. This was because of influance of glue lines of glulam on the elasticlties. 5. The failure type of glulam was wholly simple tension failure and the horizontal shear failure near neutral axis was not taken place, which was that glue line was complete in bonding and the strength of the lamina was not various but uniform. 6. The ratio of tension strain($^{\varepsilon}t$) I compression strain($^{\varepsilon}c$) initially showed uniform level After the elasticity limit. the ratio was increased with the flow of time and so the tension strain was more increased than compression strain. So this proved tension lamination technique, which is that the mechanical properties of glulam could be improved, if the lamina of more superior strength would he added on the bottom side of the glulam.
The delamination along the annual ring on the cross-section of laminae and the bonding strength according to the tangential angle between laminae were evaluated for the production of 3-ply cross-laminated timber (CLT) using domestic larch. Since there is no standard for CLT in Korea, the production and test of specimens for bonding strength followed the standard procedure of "Structural glued laminated timber" (KS F 3021). The standard specifies to exclude any measurement from the cracks of timbers resulted from drying or knots during delamination test of the glued laminated timbers. However, the failure of cross-sectional tissues along the annual rings was observed near the glue-line of all specimens during the delamination test. Because this phenomenon can generate defects in the CLT that may be exposed to various temperatures and relative humidities after the actual construction, the delamination percentage was measured by including this wood failure. As a result, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed inward was the lowest, which was around 13%, regardless of the annual ring direction of the middle lamina. On the other hand, the delamination percentage of the CLT which had been combined in such a way that the annual rings of outer lamina were directed outward was the highest, which was around 26%. Furthermore, end-split occurred in the outer lamina during the drying process of the boiling delamination test, which affected the delamination percentage. Therefore, the soaking delamination test was found to be more appropriate for evaluating the delamination strength of CLT. The block shear strength of larch CLT was $3.9{\pm}0.9$ MPa on average, which was 46% lower than the block shear strength requirement (7.1 MPa) of the standard, but satisfied the criteria of the block shear strength (3.5 MPa) of the European Standard (prEN 16351: 2013).
For quantitative evaluation of wooden structures, the mechanical performance of members has undergone outdoor exposure tests. A year-long monitoring was conducted using an SPF species. Test groups were divided into twelve (each month) to measure the moisture content, density and ultimate load. Starting from May when moisture content of the test group was at the lowest, simple failure modes were observed more frequently during the first half of the experiment, whereas complex failure modes took over during the second half. Starting from June when moisture content of the test group was the highest, ultimate load decreased by 30% in the second half compared to the first half. A multiple regression analysis confirmed that moisture content of the test group was the variable with most effect on ultimate load of various outdoor variables, and an estimation equation of a simple regression analysis revealed that moisture content and ultimate load formed an inversely proportionate relationship. It is thought that correlational relationships of variables other than moisture content could be applied with the increase in added data amount by longer periods of outdoor exposure tests.
The selected physical and mechanical properties of non-certificated LVL circulated in domestic lumber market were investigated and compared to relevant standards. The tested LVL passed the moisture content and the soaking delamination rate limit as per domestic (KS) and Japanese standard (JAS). The evaluated mechanical properties were flatwise/edgewise bending strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), horizontal shear and compressive strength. The 30 mm-thick LVL showed significantly higher bending strength than that of the 25 mm-thick LVL. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) showed same tendency in the results of bending strength. The edgewise bending strength and MOE were higher than that of flatwise bending strength and MOE. The horizontal shear strength values were also showed similar results to bending strength values. The tested results were compared each other and each products were graded according to JAS 701 grade specification. The failure mode of LVL in bending test showed the similar failure mode of solidwood that failed in a simple tension manner (splintery tension). The glue line failure was severe in 25 mm-thick specimens due to concentration of shear stress in layer discontinuity containing small voids and starved glue lines. In horizontal shear strength test, failure mode of LVL showed the typical horizontal shear failure. Compressive specimens failed with fiber crushing in company with apparent delamination that splitted along the length of the specimens. From the results, the complete bonding between lamination and consistency in thin veneer layer were considered as a critical factor in the mechanical properties of LVL. Moreover, the standard test procedure and specification for non-certificated LVL should be required to check the performance of uncertificated materials.
An evaluation of bending test of composite I and Box beams for determining the ultimate strength limit design criteria was presented. Maxium loads of composite I beams were found in beams composed of thicker upper flanges and/or vertical LVL flanges. These loads of plywood web beams were greater than those of PB web beams. Maximum loads of unsymmetrical box beams were less than those of symmetrical box beams. Thus, it took on different phase in box type beams. Ultimate loads of composite beams were greater than those of solid. The failure of composite beams were abrupt and failure mode was classified into following categories; Edgewise shear failure in web, delamination in flange-web joint, tension failure and tearing in LVL flanges, and web delamination. These failures of composite beams were appeared at the mixed mode. The influence factor affecting the performance of tested composite beams was shear strength of PB-web composite beams and compressive strength in plywood-web composite beams. It was also assumed that the influence factors on structural performance on composite beams were flange quality, web material and geometry of cross section. As one of the design methods resisting to compressive stress that was required in the case of small span to depth ratio and deep beams. composite I-beams composed of thicker upper flanges comparing to lower flanges were very effective in structural performance.
Three different finger-jointed lumbers which have different geometric features and adhesives were manufactured and studied in this study. Larch and pitch pine lumbers with and without preservative treatment were used. Bending MOE was measured as the preliminary investigation for grouping the specimen. After the finger, bending MOE of two wood species without preservative treatment shows over 97% property of the control group. The tensile modulus also shows almost same property after the finger joint. And it is found out that the preservative treatment induce little effect on bending and tensile MOE. Based on this result, high performance of examined finger-jointed lumber can be found out. However, tensile strength decreased around 20% which would be induced by the crack along the root of the finger which is formed near the edge during manufacturing stage. And finger-jointed lumber with preservative treatment even shows higher decrement of the tensile strength with higher wooden part failure mode.
