The Abies koreana Wilson has been unique species of Korea and has not been clearly investigated about lignans of extractives. This studies have been carried out from the isolation and determination of lignans from alcoholic extractives in its xylem. Six lignans were isolated and their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. They were two new compounds, (+)-koreslactol and (-)koreanol and four known compounds, lariciresinol p-coumarate, (+)-todolactol C, (-)-${\alpha}$-intermedianol, and (+)-pinoresinol.
As a way to revive the traditional technology of Korean golden varnish(Hwangchill), the exudates of D. morbifera, this study was carried out at first to investigate the anatomical characteristics and the chemical composition of D. morbifera stems and their exudates. Trees of more than 20 years old were harvested at Wando and Jejudo islands in the southwestern part of Korean peninsula during different physiological seasons of winter, spring, and summer, The results obtained are as follows: 1. In the anatomical aspect of wood, Hwangchil woods is ring-porous wood, has alternate inter-vessel pittings and horizontal intercellular canal in xylem. 2. In the chemical aspect of wood and bark, the general compositions appeared hot to differ from those of other hardwoods, and ash and alcohol-benzene extractives showed little increase with the increase of atmospheric temperature of harvesting season. 3. In the solvent-sequential extraction of bark, wood and exudate, the exudates was extracted up to 80% by ether, but the bark and wood contained a very small amount of ether extractives, about 2% in the bark and 0.5% in the xylem.
To elucidate chemical structure of the wood extractive, wood meal of Larix leptolepis Gorden was extracted with 95% ethanol for 72 hours. The extract was fractionated with organic solvents such as n-hexane, chloroform, diethylether, and ethyl acetate. From the hexane somble fraction of the extractives, a new diterpene compound was isolated and identified as 6-acetoxymanool or 13-hydroxy-8(17), 14-labddienyl-6-acetate by IR, $^1H(^{13}C)$-NMR and Mass spectrometry.
Red pine and Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis Gordon) grown in Korea have been the main species of coniferous resources in Korea. Especially, planting area of Japanese larch has been increased continueously in the recent years due to its superior plant type and rapid growth rate and its stocks reached approximately 4.32 million cubic meters at the present time. Although many research works have been done for the utilization of the larch wood in various ways, still many problems are existed in its chemical applications due to a large proportion of soluble extractives. In this study, chemical composition of larch extractives and chemical structure of its major component were analyzed. In order to identify the basic structure of major component, gas-liquid chromatography for separation of some completely methylated alditols as their acetates on a 3% - ECNSS-M on Gas Chrom Q. column was used. Proportion of extractives of Japanese larch wood was higher than that of other conifers and major component of the soluble extractives was arabinogalactan, a schematic structural formula which was presented in Figure 2. The molar ratio of arabinose and galactose was 1:4.5. The main chain of arabinogalactan was composed of 1,3 linked ${\beta}$-D-galactopyranose residues, each of which carried a side chain, attached to the C-6 positions. The exact nature of all of the side chains is not known, but the majority of these side chain was composed of 1, 6 linked ${\beta}$-D-galactopyranose residues, with 2~3 such units present per average chain. Some of the galactose units in the main chain had a residue of 3 - 0 - ${\beta}$-L-arabinopyranosyl-L-arabinofuranose. In addition, a few terminal residues of D-glucuronic acid also was confirmed, attached to C-6 position of the D-galactopyranose residue. It could concluded that the main structure of highly branched arabinogalactan from Japanese larch extractive was essentially the same as those of the other larch species.
This study was performed to understand the changes in wood extractives, mainly acetone extracts, in pine woods (Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida) treated by three blue stain fungi (BSF) such as native BSF in Korea, Leptographium sp., screened Albino strain(BSFcs-1) and commercial Cartapip and fungicide, Wood guard. In addition their pulping and bleaching properties were investigated. BSF treatment has significantly reduced acetone extracts, $25.1{\sim}30.4%$ decreasing in red pine and $22.9{\sim}28.1%$ in pitch pine. Three week aging treatment showed about 20% decreasing in red pine and 19.3% in pitch pine. There were not so significant differences in extracts reduction among native BSF and Albino-type strains (Albino strain, BSFcs-1, and commercial Cartapip). But fungicide, Wood guard, treated wood showed relatively lower decreasing rates of extractives, 14% in red pine and 10.1% in pitch pine. Therefore it is understandable that the fungicide could protect the wood from blue stain fungi attack, but has no effect on its extractive reduction. Concerned to pulping properties of BSF and fungicide treated woods, red pine and pitch pine, optimum pulping condition was 20% active alkali, wood to liquor ratio 1 to 6, $170^{\circ}C$, and 2.5 hr. In the case of BSF woods, optimum pulping condition was same as the sound wood, $43.5{\sim}45%$ of pulp yields and $1.3{\sim}1.45%$ of rejects. Screened pulp yield of fungicide treated wood was lower than those of BSF treated woods. Rejects in pulps were higher in fungicide-treated wood than BSF treated woods. Bleaching pulp yields were ranged of 92 to 93.5%. BSF, Cartapip and fungicide treated woods resulted in lower brightness of $55{\sim}58%$, but Albino-type strain(BSFcs-1) $61.3{\sim}62.3%$, very similar to untreated one. Therefore bleaching chemicals could be saved in the processing of chemical pulping.

The heartwood of cengal (Neobalanocarpus heimii) is known to have a high degree of decay resistance by virtue of its high extractive content. After 30 years in ground contact an utility pole of this tropical hardwood was found to be degraded only in the surface layers by cavity-forming soft rot fungi. The present work was undertaken 1) to characterize the degradation of cengal heartwood from the aspect of ultrastructure and chemistry and 2) to investigate the correlation between soft rot decay and its extractive microdistribution in wood tissues. The chemical analysis of cengal heartwood revealed the presence of a high amount of extractives as well as lignin. The wood contained a relatively high amount of condensed lignin and the guaiacyl units. Microscopic observations revealed that vessels, fibers and parenchyma cells (both ray and axial parenchyma) all contained extractives in their lumina, but in variable amounts. The lumina of fibers and most axial parenchyma were completely or almost completely filled with the extractives. TEM micrographs showed that cell walls were also impregnated with extractives and that pit membranes connecting parenchyma cells were well coated and impregnated with extractives. However, fungal hyphae were present in the extractive masses localized in cell lumina, and indications were that the extractives did not completely inhibit fungal growth. The extent of cell wall degradation varied with tissue types. The fibers appeared to be more susceptible to decay than vessels and parenchyma. Middle lamella was the only cell wall region which remained intact in all cell types which were severely degraded. The microscopic observations suggested a close correlation between extractive microdistribution and the pattern and extent of cell wall degradation. In addition to the toxicity to fungi, the physical constraint of the extractive material present in cengal heartwood cells is likely to have a profound effect on the growth and path of invasion of colonizing fungi, thus conferring protection to wood by restricting fungal entry into cell walls. The presence of relatively high amount of condensed lignin is also likely to be a factor in the resistance of cengal heartwood to soft rot decay.
In order to elucidate chemical structure of the wood extractives, softwood (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.) meal was extracted with 95% ethanol at room temperature for 72 hours. The extract was fractionated with organic solvents such as n-hexane, ether, ethylacetate, and acetone. From the n-hexane and ether soluble fraction of the wood extractives, four flavonoid compounds were isolated and identified as 5-hydroxy-7-methoxyflavone (I), 5-methoxy-7-hydroxyflavone (II), 5-hydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone (III), and 5-methoxy-7-hydroxyflavanone (IV) by UV, IR, $^1$H-NMR spectroscopy and MS spectrometry.
In order to reconstruct the traditional technology of Korean golden varnish(Hwangchil) made from the exudates of D. morbifera, this study in the second step was carried out to analyze the chemical composition and oil properties of the exudates for coatings and bark extractives made from the trees of D. morbifera more than 20 years old grown in Wando and Jejudo islands in the southwestern part of Korean peninsula according to the physiological seasons. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The exudates appeared to be a phytoalexin because it exudated after several days in tapping only in summer season. 2. Both the exudates and bark-extracts with acetone contained 50~60% unsaponifiables and 30~50% saponifiables 3. A major component of essential oil in bark-extractives was ${\beta}$-cubebene and reached to 60~80%, while that of exudates included only 34% ${\beta}$-cubebene and some other compounds such as ${\beta}$-cadinene of 12%, aromadendrene of 9%, ${\beta}$-selinene of 9%, CAS030021-74-0 of 10%, etc. in GC-MS spectrometer. 4. A mjor component of fatty oil fraction in bark-extractives was linoleic acid and reached to more than 60%, while the exudates had mostly other components such as terpenes and phenolics instead of fatty acids accordint to GC-MS spectrometer. 5. Iodine value of samples after oil refining had 214mg/g in the exudates and more than than 150mg/g in bark-extractives, so the latter belonged to a drying oil.. 6. Therefore, the exudates from D. morbifera for traditional Korean golden varnish seems to have beeen used to a good varnish because it has some specific compounds different from its bark-extractives or general varnishes.
