Anatomy of Quercus variabilis charcoal was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Charcoal was prepared in an electric furnace under nitrogen gas atmosphere at $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$, and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The structure of charcoal was significantly affected by charring temperature. In cross section, charcoal prepared at $400^{\circ}C$ exhibited a smooth clean surface. As the charring temperature increased, the surface became more rough and increasingly disrupted. The cell walls appeared homogeneous and glass-like. Ray parenchyma cells showed very little separation from each other in radial section at $400^{\circ}C$. At $600^{\circ}C$ and above there is an apparent disintegration of the middle lamella, resulting in a separation of the ray cells. The $2{\sim}4{\mu}m$ wart-like protuberances were observed on the surfaces of the parenchyma cells. These structures were seen in charcoal prepared at all temperatures. Distinctive features can be seen in multiseriate rays as large crack and split. Rhomboidal crystals in crystalliferous cells had a smooth surface at $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$, but the crystals had a sponge like appearance at $800^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$.
In this study, the effects of carbonization temperature on the physico-chemical properties of porous wood charcoal are studied by FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies. IR studies showed that cellulose and hemicellulose are mostly decomposed in the precarbonization stage at $500^{\circ}C$, while the decomposition reaction of relatively more stable lignin lasts up to $700^{\circ}C$. Above $900^{\circ}C$, the peak at $1575cm^{-1}$ disappears and a new peak at $1630cm^{-1}$, which seems to be related to the new carbon deposit phase, is evolved. The results of Raman studies, which show the red-shift of D-band and the increase in the relative intensity of D- to G-band, indicate that the size of the crystalline becomes smaller with increasing the carbonization temperature.

To survey the present qualities of the molded and to present the base line of qualities in manufacture, the charcoal collected at 27 makers through the nation were examined. The molded charcoal examined in this paper, which is made by carbonization and molding of sawdusts from wood industries, is widely used to kindle holed-coal-briquette. The holed-coal-briquette is utilized in cooking and heating as primary energy source of ordinary households in this country. The average qualities of molded charcoal was as follows; ash content 13.95$\%$, weight 184.6g, density 0.47, time of kindling holed-coal-briquette 65.4 min., calorie 5,790 kcal/kg. The ten makers produced inferior qualities, that was 37 per cent of the 27 makers examined. The base line of qualities of molded charcoal was defined as follows; ash content below 17$\%$, weight above 175 g, falling strength above 300 mm, calorie above 5,500 kcal/kg.
Bottom ash generated from thermal power plants is mainly disposed in landfills, from which metals may be leached by infiltrating water. To evaluate the effect of metals in leachate on soil and groundwater, we characterized bottom ash generated from burning cokes, bituminous coal, the mixture of bituminous coal and wood pellets, and charcoal powder. The bottom ash of charcoal powder had a relatively large particle size, and its wood texture was well-preserved from SEM observation. The bottom ash of charcoal powder and wood pellets had relatively high K concentration from total element analysis. The eluates of the bottom ash samples had appreciable concentrations of Ca, Al, Fe, SO4, and NO3, but they were not a significant throughout the batch test. Therefore, it is considered that there is low possibility of soil and groundwater contamination due to leaching of metal ions and anions from these bottom ash in landfills. To estimate the trend of various trace elements, long-term monitoring and additional analysis need to be performed while considering the site conditions, because they readily adsorb on soil and aquifer substances.
The study was carried out to analyze wood quality of coffin board, the wood species of coffin excavated in Youngdong, Korea. All coffin woods were identified as hard pines, Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora S. & Z.). According to wood quality of coffins, inner coffins of Bae Cheon-Jo and his wife showed similarity and dissimilarity comparing with several literatures. The similarity was in the structure of panels, bottom lining board and charcoal layer, and the dissimilarity was in jointing. From the analysis of fibrous materials attached to coffin woods, the paper mulberry and cotton fibers were identified. In the inner coffin of Bae Cheon-Jo, tool traces by handle planer were observed.
Wood identification was conducted for the 8 Neolithic charcoals excavated at Giheung Nongseori Ruins through scanning electron microscopy. They were all identified as hardwood: 6 and 1 were found to be Prinus section and Cerris section of subgenus Lepidobalanus under genus Quercus, respectively, and the remaining 1 to be genus Betula. This species composition was thought to indicate the temperate to warm temperate climate region.
The identification of species, hygroscopic property, and ability of ethylene gas absorption of 23 ancient charcoals excavated from wooden coffin burials and roof-tile kilns of Chudong-ri cultural site were investigated. All of the 12 charcoals excavated from wooden coffin burials were broad-leaved trees. Among the total 12 samples, 9 samples were Lepidobalanus and others were Celtis spp.. On the other hand, other 11 charcoals from roof-tile kilns were needle-leaved tree, Pinus spp.(hard pine). The broad-leaved tree charcoals from wooden coffin burials showed a higher moisture absorption capacity than needle-leaved tree charcoals from roof-tile kilns. The ethylene gas absorption was greater in the Lepidobalanus charcoal than that of Celtis spp. and Pinus spp. (hard pine) charcoal. The broad-leaved tree charcoal having high absorption ability of substances was due to a large microporous and specific surface area. Therefore, it was estimated that broad-leaved tree charcoals were filled in order to make favorable condition in tomb. The wood quality of pine is soft and easy to burn because of low specific gravity, as well as high calorific value by resin in wood. We could assume that the pine wood was used as fuel for roof-tile kilns because of easy control of heating and thermal power.
This study was examined to investigate the effect of wood carbonization products on growth and body composition of oliver flounder(Paralichthys olivaceus) as a part of fishery utilization of charcoal and pyroligneous acid. Weight gain in oliver flounder fed with wood carbonization products was higher than that of the control group. Feed efficiency between the groups fed with charcoal and Mogchotan(the mixture of charcoal and pyroligneous acid, 80:20, w/w) and the control group showed no significant difference(p>0.05) and was significantly higher in group fed with pyroligneous acid than the control group(p<0.05). All groups fed with wood carbonization products were also higher than the control group in hemoglobin and hematocrit. Especially, the amount of both components was significantly higher in group fed with Mogchotan(p<0.05). The result indicates that the addition of Mogchotan can improve the health of oliver flounder, and was excellent in the mortality and the recovery rate. In conclusion, Mogchotan treatment would be suitable way for improving the growth and health of oliver flounder.
The purpose of this study is to provide an inquiry into paleovegetation (paleoenvironment), eruption age and inferred emplacement temperature of pyroclastic deposit using charcoal occurred in the Quaternary Nari Caldera, Ulleung Island. In order to obtain the data, we carried out species identification and tree-ring analysis, radiocarbon dating for the charcoal. This sample was collected from pumiceous deposit in lowermost member(Member N-5) of the Nari Tephra Formation, which corresponds to the wood branch that has well preserved the tree-ring structure. Speciation and outermost tree-ring of wood reveal Picea spp. and $263+{\alpha}$ years. The calibrated ages from the center(pith) to the outermost tree-ring are $20,260{\pm}230$, $19,995{\pm}245$, and $19,975{\pm}265cal\;BP$, respectively, which are accordant with the tree-ring position. The youngest age, <19,710 cal BP would have implications for the eruptive age of Member N-5. Our results indicate that Picea spp. is the paleovegetation representing that Nari Caldera was under cold and wet climate conditions during the late Pleistocene. Based on the silky luster, brittleness, color, and streak of charcoal, etc., the lowest emplacement temperatures of pyroclastic flow are interpreted to have been at least as high as $350{\sim}500^{\circ}C$.

Owing to the Increasing use of fossil fuels, worldwide concerns over environmental pollution are increasing. As a solution, ligneous biomass has emerged as a promising alternative fuel in recent times. Therefore, in this study, a moisture evaporation model that largely influences the energy density and efficiency of ligneous biomass is studied using a numerical approach. Furthermore, the thermal characteristics are analyzed in terms of torrefaction temperature and moisture fractions in the wood, and the type of wood species. The results show that the temperature and moisture fractions of wood decrease with an increase in the torrefaction temperature. In particular, when the torrefaction temperature is lower than 423K, there were little changes in the moisture fraction in the wood. Furthermore, it was found that charcoal is produced more slowly as the moisture fraction in the wood increases.
