  • Block-glued glulam is a structural material that can be used as a construction member of a large-section wooden building, which is produced by edgewise bonding of two or more glulam beam elements. The edgewise bonding performance of the block-glued glulam was examined through delamination test and block shear strength test. According to the test results, the block-glued glulam that was manufactured with 1.5 MPa of compressive pressure after applying $500g/m^2$ of Resorcinol adhesive showed the best edgewise bonding performance. The block-glued glulam produced in a good edgewise bonding condition was compared with a control glulam with the same section modulus for bending strength performance. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) in bending was similar to that of the control glulam. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of the block-glued glulam was higher by 27% than that of the control glulam. No interfacial failure or cohesive failure were observed in the edgewise bonding layer.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the planar (rolling) shear strength of OSB (oriented strand board) panels and domestic plywood through 5 point bending test method in ASTM D2718 standard. The test specimens were prepared in parallel and perpendicular direction to major axis (along the length of panels) and tested up to failure, and failure modes were also examined. From the test results, rolling shear strength were found to be $1.32{\sim}1.94N/mm^2$ in parallel to major axis, and $1.46{\sim}1.99N/mm^2$ in perpendicular to major axis respectively. Little difference was found between parallel and perpendicular direction of rolling shear strength. There were no statistically significant differences in rolling shear strength between Canadian OSB and domestic plywood in the parallel direction, and between Chilean OSB and domestic plywood in the perpendicular direction. The shear failure was observed in all tested OSB panels, whereas shear failure, glue line delamination, and bending combined with shear failure were observed in the domestic plywood.

  • Oriented strand board (OSB) distributed in Korea was collected, and its mechanical properties were investigated according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Japanese Industrial Standards, and Korean Design Standard. Ten types of OSBs were collected, including six types for walls and others for floors. The thickness swelling, moisture content, and density of each product satisfied the ISO standards. All products showed lower formaldehyde emission values than those of the SE0 grade. The internal bonding strengths of all products, except products B, H, and I, met the ISO standards. However, products A, B, C, F, and H did not satisfy the thickness swelling standard of the load-bearing OSB for use in dry conditions. Products D and G showed heavy duty load-bearing OSB for use in humid conditions in terms of internal bonding and bending strength after boiling. In the nail head pull-through force and lateral nail resistance tests, all products met the standards. In terms of the structural bending performance (four points), the six types of OSBs for walls satisfied the standard for bending strength and modulus of elasticity. All the products for flooring met the standard for bending strength but, except for product G, the products did not meet the standard for modulus of elasticity. Although the results of this study cannot represent the performance of all imported OSBs, considering the above results, the water resistance performance of seven types of OSB products did not meet the standard, and 10 types of products did not match the labeling grades.

  • The bent wood technique has been used for making the bow, the musical instruments and the wagon wheel, The Winsor chair of England in 1730's was the first Lfurniture product by using this method. This method was spread out by Michael Thonet in Austria after the Industrial Evolution. Early making technique of Winsor chair was relatively easy, but Michael Thonet's bent chair was mass produced by the machine and launched the revolution in the industrial furniture. 20th-Century European furniture designers applied the method of layering and forming plywood to bent chairs, enhanced the function and conformability. The bent chair had a big impact on modern chair design. The bent chair has the formative beauty and convenience from the character of softness and colors of wooden materials and has been developed variously by furniture designers. This study is a new approach to use Dyed-Gathered Wood with various colors and patterns as a material of the bend wood. First, bent wood with the Dyed-Gathered Wood enhances a close texture of wooden material textures instead of coating the surface. Second, flexibility of the bent wood with the Dyed-Gathered Wood enables wood bending techniques. Lastly, the Dyed-Gathered Wood is made with relatively cheap woods, replaces expensive imported woods which cause product price rise. This method enables a material cost saving and a stable supply of material.

  • The concept of horizontal shear connection utilization on wood-concrete beams intends to be an alternative connection detail for composite wood-concrete decks. The volume of sawn-wood is over three times more expensive than concrete, in Brazil. In order to be competitive in the Brazilian market we need a composite deck with the least amount of wood and a simple and inexpensive connection detail. This research project uses medium to high density tropical hardwoods managed from the Brazilian Amazon region and construction steel rods. The beams studied are composed of a bottom layer of staggered wood boards and a top layer of concrete. The wood members are laterally nailed together to form a wide beam, and horizontal rebar connectors are installed before the concrete layer is applied on top. Two sets of wood-concrete layered beams with horizontal rebar connectors (6 and 8) were tested in third-point loading flexural bending. The initial results reveal medium composite efficiency for the beams tested. An improvement on the previously conceived connection detail (set with six connectors) for the composite wood-concrete structural floor system was achieved by the set with eight connectors. The new layout of the horizontal rebar connectors added higher composite efficiency for the beams tested. Further analysis with advanced rigorous numerical Finite Element Modeling is suggested to optimize the connection parameters. Composite wood-concrete decks can attend a large demand for pedestrian bridges, as well as residential and commercial slabs in the Brazilian Amazon.

  • This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of wood-based panels and wood-cement board for the possible uses as flooring and wall materials. The optimum cement/wood ratio(C/W ratio) of wood~cement board manufactured by clamp-pressing was from 2.7 to 3.2. The dimesional stability was superior in the C/W ratio of 3.2. Particularly, the dimensional stability of cement board using fine particle for particleboard face layer was favorable through three levels of C/W ratio. According to types of wooden material, bending strength of cement board using coarse particle for particleboard core layer or old newspaper(ONP) fiber was relatively higher than others. Thermal conductivities of wood-cement boards were no lower than that of gypsum board, and higher than those of plywood and boards. In case of wood-cement board of the C/W ratio of 2.7, the fire-proof performances of cement composite boards were greater than that of gypsum board, and weight loss reached to about a half of gypsum board. Then, wood-cement boards showed superior fire-proof performance compared to wood-based panels.

  • This study serves as basic research for the development of a new wood-based building finishing material that improved the weakness of inorganic materials such as gypsum board and magnesium board widely used as interior finishing materials and brought out the strength of the wood. The results of evaluating the physical and mechanical properties and the environmental effect related to hazardous substance discharge having manufactured a wood-magnesium laminated composite are as follows. The thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of WML board was improved by about 28~109 percent over magnesium board due to the low thermal conductivity of wood. The adhesive strength of WML board showed a similar result to that of plywood as it exceeds 0.7N/㎟, the adhesive standard of wood veneer which is presented by KS F 3101. Bending strength and screw holding strength were more improved by manufacturing WML board than magnesium board. The WML board manufactured in this study satisfied the criteria for emissions of hazardous substances prescribed in the Indoor Air Quality Control Act, and confirmed the possibility of development as a new wood-based composite material that can replace existing inorganic materials.
