In a wireless sensor network (WSN) setting, this paper presents a distributed decision-making framework and illustrates its application in an online structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The objective is to recover a damage severity vector, which identifies, localizes, and quantifies damages in a structure, via distributive and collaborative decision-making among wireless sensors. Observing the fact that damages are generally scarce in a structure, this paper develops a nonlinear 0-norm minimization formulation to recover the sparse damage severity vector, then relaxes it to a linear and distributively tractable one. An optimal algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and a heuristic distributed linear programming (DLP) algorithm are proposed to estimate the damage severity vector distributively. By limiting sensors to exchange information among neighboring sensors, the distributed decision-making algorithms reduce communication costs, thus alleviate the channel interference and prolong the network lifetime. Simulation results in monitoring a steel frame structure prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
This paper analyses the data collected from the $2^{nd}$ Jindo Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge in Korea that is a structural health monitoring (SHM) international test bed for advanced wireless smart sensors network (WSSN) technology. The SHM system consists of a total of 70 wireless smart sensor nodes deployed underneath of the deck, on the pylons, and on the cables to capture the vibration of the bridge excited by traffic and environmental loadings. Analysis of the data is performed in both the time and frequency domains. Modal properties of the bridge are identified using the frequency domain decomposition and the stochastic subspace identification methods based on the output-only measurements, and the results are compared with those obtained from a detailed finite element model. Tension forces for the 10 instrumented stay cables are also estimated from the ambient acceleration data and compared both with those from the initial design and with those obtained during two previous regular inspections. The results of the data analyses demonstrate that the WSSN-based SHM system performs effectively for this cable-stayed bridge, giving direct access to the physical status of the bridge.

Ubiquitous computing is one of the key technology areas in the "Project on Development of Ubiquitous computing and network technology" promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a frontier business of the $21^{st}$ century in Korea, which is based on the new concept merging physical space and computer-based cyber space. With recent advances in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology, low cost and low-power consumption wireless micro sensor nodes have been available. Using these smart sensor nodes, there are many activities to monitor real world, for example, habitat monitoring, earthquake monitoring and so on. In this paper, we introduce web-based real environment monitoring system incorporating wireless sensor nodes. It collects sensing data produced by some wireless sensor nodes and stores them into a database system to analyze. Our environment monitoring system is composed of a networked camera and environmental sensor nodes, which are called Mica2 and developed by University of California at Berkeley. We have modified and ported network protocols over TinyOS and developed a monitoring application program using the MTS310 and MTS420 sensors that are able to observe temperature, relative humidity, light and accelerator. The sensed data can be accessed user-friendly because our environment monitoring system supports web-based user interface. Moreover, in this system, we can setup threshold values so the system supports a function to inform some anomalous events to administrators. Especially, the system shows two useful pre-processed data as a kind of practical uses: a discomfort index and a septicity index. To make both index values, the system restores related data from the database system and calculates them according to each equation relatively. We can do enormous works using wireless sensor technologies, but just environment monitoring. In this paper, we show just one of the plentiful applications using sensor technologies.
In this study, the applicability and practicality of landslides monitoring by using wireless sensor network (WSN) was analysed. WSN system consists of a sensor node for collecting and transmitting data using IEEE 802.14e standard, a gateway for collecting data and transmitting the data to the monitoring server. In the topology of the sensor network, a highly flexible and reliable mesh type was adopted, and three testbeds were chosen in each location of Seoul metropolitan area. Soil moisture sensors, tensiometers, inclinometers, and a rain gauge were installed at each testbed and sensor node to monitor the landslide. For the estimation of the optimal network topology between sensor nodes, the susceptibility assessment of landslides, forest density and viewshed analysis of terrain were conducted. As a result, the network connection works quite well and measured value of the volumetric water content and matric suction simulates well the general trend of the soil water characteristic curve by the laboratory test. As such, it is noted that WSN system, which is the reliable technique, can be applied to the landslide monitoring.

Marine radioactivity monitoring is critical for taking immediate action in case of unexpected nuclear accidents at nuclear facilities located near coastal areas. Especially when the level of contamination is not predictable, mobile monitoring systems will be useful for wide-area ocean radiation survey and for determination of the level of radioactivity. Here, we used a silicon photomultiplier and a high-efficiency GAGG crystal to fabricate a compact, battery-powered gamma spectroscopy that can be used in an ocean environment. The developed spectroscopy has compact dimensions of 6.5 × 6.5× 8 cm3 and weighs 560 g. We used LoRa, a low-power wireless protocol for communication. Successful data transmission was achieved within 1.4 m water depth. The developed gamma spectroscopy was able to detect radioactivity from a 137Cs point source (3.7 kBq) at a distance of 20 cm in water. Moreover, we demonstrated an unmanned radioactivity monitoring system in a real sea by combining unmanned surface vehicle with the developed gamma spectroscopy. A hidden 137Cs source (3.07 MBq) was detected by the unmanned system at a distance of 3 m. After successfully testing the developed mobile spectroscopy in an ocean environment, we believe that our proposed system will be an effective solution for mobile real-time marine radioactivity monitoring.

Wireless sensor network is one of prospective methods for railway monitoring due to the long-term operation and low-maintenance performances. How to supply power to the wireless sensor nodes has drawn much attention recently. In railway monitoring, the idea of converting ambient vibration energy from vibration of railway track induced by passing trains to electric energy has made it a potential way for powering the wireless sensor nodes. In this paper, a bimorph cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester was designed based on a single degree-of-freedom model. Experimental test was also performed to validate the design. The first natural frequency of the bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester was decreased from 117.1 Hz to 65.2 Hz by adding 4 gram tip mass to the free end of the 8.6 gram energy harvester. In addition, the power generation of the piezoelectric energy harvester with 4 gram tip mass at resonant frequency was increased from 0.14 mW to 0.74 mW from $2.06m/s^2$ base excitation compared to stand-alone piezoelectric energy harvester without tip mass.
Quick, accurate damage monitoring is strongly required for damage assessment in the aftermath of a large natural disaster. Wireless sensor networks are promising technologies to acquire damage information in a citywide area. The wireless sensor networks, however, would be faced with difficulty to collect data in real-time and to expand the scalability of the networks. This paper discusses a scheme of network architecture to cove a whole city in multi-tier heterogeneous networks, which consist of wireless sensor networks, access networks and a backbone network. We first review previous studies for citywide damage monitoring, and then discuss the feature of multi-tier heterogeneous networks to cover a citywide area.

This paper presents a wireless sensor network protocol aimed for artificial structure monitoring. The proposed protocol enables the sensor network to operate at a low duty cycle for reducing power consumption with a high degree of synchronization accuracy. It also enables event-triggered measurement of environmental information with a high sampling rate and the transmission of the measured data with a low latency. The feasibility of the proposed protocol is demonstrated through experiments involving three sensor nodes and a sink node. Though a tunnel health monitoring was considered in the paper, the proposed protocol can be easily adopted in other areas.

As a core area of the new computing paradigm, the Ubiquitous Sensor Network Technology utilizes a wireless sensor networking which can be applied to the Context Information Monitoring System. When the technology is used in a poor user-environment for monitoring purposes, it can cost-effectively gather the context data on real-time basis, analyze the information gathered, effectively response to the user situation, and execute orders to create environmental factors desired by the user. This study structures a system able to monitor information in regards to a user-environment based on wireless-node sensor technology coupled with the Ubiquitous Sensor Network Technology. The proposed system requires a minimal collection of data without continuous monitoring. Monitoring periodically, it can sense the user-environment more efficiently than the existing monitoring technologies based on the wire-communication technology.
In this study, we installed a weather observation tower tailored to the intertidal zone and established an intertidal weather observation system capable of real-time monitoring through a wireless network. This provided weather observation data representing the meteorological characteristics of the intertidal zone. To optimize this system in the future, we present practical directions for the development of observation equipment and for the data management and sharing, and we contribute to establishing the infrastructure.
