As a basic study for development of early wheats an experiment was carried out at four sites of Korea by use of 60 varieties. Analysis of variance for heading and maturing dates revealed that there were highly significant among varieties, but not significant among variety x location-interactions, thus indicating the stable response for earliness at all locations of each variety. Grain filling periods of each variety showed the stable response at all locations like those of heading and maturing dates, however, there showed significance among locations for early group, and among varieties for late group. High correlations were between growth habit and winter survival for early varieties, and between shortday length and grain filling period for late one. Interior factors most closely related to heading date were growth habit and winter survival, and winter survival showed highly negative correlation with heading date. It needs to breed the early wheats adaptable for southern and/or northern areas separatively. The earlier heading and maturing dates of wheats were, the shorter internodes of culm are, appearing the outstanding phenomenon in early wheats. Heading date appeared negative correlations with test weight and with number of culm before winter, but showed positive correlation with number of kernels/spike.

Soil fertility different depend on application rate of manure and compost for many years. While each crop has different adaptability depend on soil fertility, crop and species or varieties should be chosen depending on the adaptability and productivity. These experiments were carried out to compare the five winter cereal crops for whole crop silage on growth, yield and feed value as affected by soil organic content. The rate of increase on no. of spikes at high fertile soil compared with medium fertile soil was sequently high Samhan (Oat's variety) > Cheongwoo (Wheat) > Gogu (Rye) > Youngyang (Barley) > Shinyoung (Triticale). The rate of decrease at low fertile soil compared with medium fertile soil was sequently high Youngyang > Gogu > Cheongwoo > Shinyoung > Samhan. The triticale was lower variation of no. of spikes as affected by soil organic content than that of other winter cereals. The variations of dry matter yield as affected by soil fertility was higher oat and barley and lower triticale. Forage yield of triticale was higher about 69 percent than that of barley at low fertile soil. Forage yield was the highest in triticale and the lowest in rye in all soil fertility. In high fertile soil, rate of increasing digestible dry matter (DDM) yield compared with medium fertile was high in Samhan and Youngyang. Rate of reduced DDM yield in low fertile soil compared with medium fertile was low in Shinyoung and Cheongwoo.
The nationwide survey of weed population covering 1,800 wheat and barley fields in 60 Cities and Guns all around Korea was conducted in December of 1982 and March-April of 1983. In this survey result, two species of gresses and 35 species of broadleaves were identified, and among them 36 and 29 species were found in the wheat and barley fields of upland and paddy, respectively. In the scope of weed life cycle, biennials were more dominant than perennials and annuals in these fields. The most dominant weed species in upland fields were Stellaria media, Cyrillus and Alopecurus aequalis Sobol var. amurensis Ohwi while those in paddy fields were Stellaria alsine Grimm. var. undulata Ohwi and Alopecurus aequalis Sobol var. amurensis Ohwi. In addition, the more weeds were observed in the conventional row seeding method than in other seeding methods including drill seeding and also in no-tillage than in tillage method. In the other hand, the successive use of herbicide for several years greatly influenced the pattern of weed occurrence; broadleaved weeds increased and grasses decreased with the successive use of herbicides.
The characteristics of four samples of noodle flours milled from Australian Standard White(ASW) wheat were compared with one sample of noodle flour prepared from a blend of hard red winter(HRW) and western white(WW) American wheats. The ASW flours had lower content of protein and ash. Farinograms revealed that the absorption of the ASW flours was slightly higher than that of the HRW-WW flour. The mixing time, however, showed no difference between ASW flours and HRW-WW flour. The stability and the mechanical tolerance index were different among ASW flours, which were lower than HRW-WW flour. The ratios of resistance to extention determined by extensigraph for ASW flours were higher except one flour than HRW-WW flour. The flours showed characteristic mean particle sizes, which may reflect the differences in hardness of wheat used in the flour production. Farinograph indices showed no correlations with protein content and extensigraph indices. The amylograph peak viscosity was inversely correlated with the protein content (p<0.05).

A new winter wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar "Hwanggeumal" was developed by the NICS(National Institute of Crop Science), RDA(Rular Dvelopment Administraion) in 2019. It was derived from a cross of the "Jokyoung//Kauz/Rayon" and "Jopoom" in 2008. It had advanced generation through bulk and pedigree method for seven years and designated line name "Jeonju398" after AYT(Advance Yield Trial) test for two years. And "Hwangeumal" was designated variety name after RYT(Regional Yield Trial) test in eight locations around Korea for two years from 2018 to 2019. Its heading date was April 19 and maturity date was May 31, which were similar to Jokyoung. "Hwanggeumal" had shorter plant height(75 cm) and spike length(7.1 cm), spikes per m2(699) and lower 1,000 grain weight(44.2 g) than "Jokyoung"(78 cm, 8.2 cm, 776, 46.6 g, respectively). "Hwanggeumal" was showed weak to winter hardiness and susceptible to powdery mildew but tolerance to PHS(Pre-harvest sprouting). The average grain yield in the AYT was 6.2 ton/ha, which were 10% more than "Jokyoung" And in the RYT was 5.1 ton/ha in upland and 4.4 ton/ha in paddy field, which were lower than "Jokyoung", respectively. "Hwanggeumal"s flour yield (71.4%) and flour lightness (91.82) showed similar to "Jokyung" and higher protein content (14.0%) and gluten content (10.3%) and SDS-sedimentation volume (60.3ml). These result showed that the "Hwanggeumal" dough strength of flour is strong than "Jokyung". "Hwanggeumal"s HMW-GS(High molecular weight gluten subunits) composition are Glu-D1 (5+10), Granule-bound starch synthase(GBSS) composition are Wx-A1 (a), Wx-B1 (b), Wx-D1 (a) and composition of Puroindolines are Pina-D1(a), Pinb-D1(b).
It was identified as a sharp eyespot (Rhizoctonia cerealis) that the isolates from abnormal symptoms in wheat that showed yellowing leaves, necrotic spot on stem base and dead tillers. These isolates have slower growth property and fewer mycelia than Rhizoctonia solani AG-1(1A) (KACC 40106). They showed binuclear cell, same media cultural and DNA characteristics to R. cerealis. They caused same symptoms on leaves and stem base appeared in artificial inoculation test, comparing to diseased wheat fields and also affect to maturing of kernels. They have optimal growth temperature and acidity on the artificial media as $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and pH 5~7, respectively. In the investigation of varietal resistance of Korean winter cereal crops to sharp eyespot, there was no resistant in wheat cultivars that all materials infected over 20% diseased ratio. 12 cultivars including 'Anbaekmil', however, considered to moderate resistance with 20 to 30% infection ratio. The others crops using in feeding, whole crop barley, oat, rye and triticale were resistant below 15% diseased degree except the rye that showed over 50% infection rate. It was the first evaluation to sharp eyespot resistance for the Korean feeding crop cultivars. Most tested Korean barley cultivars for malting and food were moderate and susceptible to the sharp eyespot. Only 3 hulled barley, 'Tapgolbori', 'Albori' and 'Seodunchalbori', showed resistance with less than 10% diseased ratio. All tested naked barley cultivars showed susceptible response to the disease.
This study was conducted to estimate organic Hanwoo carrying capacity when whole crop wheat and triticale as winter forage crops were grown on different applying sources (no fertilizer, organic fertilizer or cattle slurry), and mixed sowing in combination with hairy vetch and forage pea at the level of 50% cattle slurry application during the period of 2009~2011. The experimental plots were consisted of 5 treatments. Each treatment was triplicates and allocated in the randomized complete block design. For whole crop wheat, annual mean dry matter (DM) yield was significantly (P<0.05) higher for fertilizer application treatments than for no fertilizer treatment, and crude protein (CP) yield was significantly (P<0.05) higher for forage pea and hairy vetch-mixed sowing treatments than for no fertilizer and organic ferilizer treatments. Mean CP, total digestible nutrients (TDN) and relative feed value (RFV) contents of legumes-mixed sowing treatments was significantly (P<0.05) higher than those of other treatments. As diets replaced with 70% whole crop wheat were provided for 450kg of Hanwoo heifers, legumes-mixed sowing treatments could raise more heifers than organic fertilizer and no fertilizer treatments. For triticale, annual mean DM, CP and TDN yields were significantly (P<0.05) higher for fertilizer application treatments than for no fertilizer treatment, and CP content of legumes-mixed sowing and cattle slurry application treatments was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of other treatments. When 450kg of Hanwoo heifers were fed on diets replaced with 70% triticale, it was estimated that legumes-mixed sowing treatments at the level of 50% cattle slurry application could rear average 3.3~3.4 heads/ha/year, which was significantly (P<0.05) higher than no fertilizer treatment (2.5 heads/ha/year). It was indicated that DM yields of whole crop wheat and triticale were much more effective in cattle slurry application than organic fertilizer, and Legumes-mixed sowing at the level of 50% cattle slurry application rather than whole crop wheat or triticale alone increased yields per unit area and nutritional value such as CP content. In conclusion, it is conceived that whole crop wheat or triticale produced in the manner above can be used instead of grains imported as dietary protein sources in the organic Hanwoo feeding regimen.
Thirty-one multiparous Bos indicus${\times}$Bos taurus cows were offered concentrate supplements based on (1) 2 kg wheat bran; (2) 4 kg wheat bran; and (3) concentrate (30 maize: 67 wheat bran) at 0.5 kg per 1.0 kg milk produced, in a one year study in India. All supplements also contained 2 parts of a mineral mixture and 1 part salt. Cows were allocated to treatments at calving on parity (2nd and 3rd calf) with 13, 8 and 10 cows respectively in treatments 1, 2 and 3. They were individually fed for whole lactation, the basal diet being ad libitum berseem clover plus 2 kg wheat straw in the cool season/winter (period 1) and chopped maize in summer (period 2). Diets with berseem offered TDN and CP contents of 67.6, 18.2; 65.5, 16.8; and 67.5, 16.8 percent; and with maize fodder 62.6, 12.0; 62.6, 12.5; and 63.3, 12.5 percent for treatments 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Total dry matter (DM) intakes (1) 9.9 kg, (2) 10.9 kg and (3) 11.1 kg DM/day and intake of nutrients (TDN, CP) increased with level of supplementation (p<0.01), but effects of treatment on animal performance were not significant. Cow milk yields averaged (1) 7.9 kg, (2) 8.1 kg and (3) 8.8 kg milk/day (p>0.05) for lactation lengths of 252, 270 and 220 days (p>0.05) and cows gained +7.3; +8.1; and +12.0 kg respectively over their lactation (p>0.05). Wheat bran was used effectively as the sole energy component in concentrates for lactating dairy cows. Its use could potentially reduce feed costs and demands for cereal grain. Reduced concentrate levels may be considered if green forages of high nutrient content are fed ad libitum. Associated economic advantages or disadvantages require further evaluation.

This study was attempted to investigate preference characteristics affecting for winter kimchi. Questionnaire were collected by 646 nationwide households during 3 months from December 2000 in Korea, and the data were analyzed by SPSS program. The results were as follows: (1) Seven minor ingredients including red pepper, garlic, ginger, green onion, paste (e.g. glutinous rice, rice and/or wheat flour paste), sugar and sesame were user in high preference for making winter kimchi in that odor. Seafoods (oyster, shrimp, Alaska pollack, yellow corvenia, squid and hairtail) were also utilized for making winter kimchi related with regional characteristics. (2) Two jeotkals, anchovy and anchovy juice, were popular ingredients for winter kimchi in southern region, while shrimp jeotkal in middle region including Seoul, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and Jeju northern sand lance juice jeotkal in western region, respectively. (3) Two kimchi, green onion and leek kimchi were high favored by people in spring regardless of region, and baby radish kimchi and cucumber kimchi in summer, pony-tail kimchi and gutjuli (fresh kimchi) in autumn, respectively. Except for winter cabbage kimchi, however, dongchimi and godulbaegi (Korean lettuce kimchi) were high favorite kimchi in winter. It was estimated that Koreans consume about 80 g of kimchi per person per day.

Twenty-four Harnai lambs 6 to 7 month old, weighing $16{\pm}2kg$ were used in a completely randomized design in growth and digestibility trials to study fourwing saltbush ratio supplemented with cotton seed cake. The animal were divided at random into three groups of 8 animals each. Three iso-nitrogenous (10.5% CP) experimental rations (1, 2 and 3) containing wheat straw + lucerne hay (24:76); fourwing saltbush (Atriplex canescens) + cotton seed cake (71:29); and wheat straw + cottonseed cake (41:59); respectively, were allotted to each group randomly. All the animals were taken out for grazing in a dormant native range for about 3 hours in the afternoon during the growth trial. The growth trial lasted for 8 weeks followed by a digestibility trial. At the end of 8 weeks lambs on ration 3 had gained significantly (p<0.10) more weight compared to those on rations 1 and 2 which maintained their body weight. The crude protein digestibility of the fourwing saltbush based ration was comparable with the other two treatments (71 vs 70 and 71%). However, the digestibility of dry matter (41%), acid detergent fibre (13%) and neutral detergent fibre (22%) of this ration was significantly lower (p<0.10) than the other two diets. The results suggest that lambs can be maintained on fourwing saltbush during winter without significant loss in body weight with 30% extra protein concentrate supplementation.
