The voltage variation problem at the point of common coupling (PCC) in a grid-connected wind turbine is investigated. The voltage variation problem is one of the most frequent power quality issues for the grid connection of large amounts of input power in a weak grid. Through the simplified modeling of the wind turbine and power network, the magnitude of PCC voltage variation is calculated by using the equivalent circuit parameters and output power of the wind turbine. The required amount of reactive power that can compensate the voltage variation is also presented analytically by using the vector diagram method. The proposed calculation and compensation method of the PCC voltage variation is verified by computer simulations and experiments.
Because of the nature of wind, the output power of wind turbines fluctuates according to wind speed variation. Therefore, many countries have set up wind-turbine interconnection standards usually named as Grid-Code to regulate the output power of wind farms to improve power system reliability and power quality. This paper proposes three operation modes of wind farms such as maximum power point tracking (MPPT) mode, single wind turbine control mode and wind farm control mode to control the output power of wind turbines as well as overall wind farms. This paper also proposes an operation scheme of wind farm to alleviate power fluctuation of wind farm by choosing the appropriate control mode and coordinating multiple wind turbines in consideration of grid conditions. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified via simulation studies in PSCAD/EMTDC with doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine models.
In order to clarify characteristics of variation in wind energy over a long-term period, an investigation was carried out at Seoguang site on Jeju island. The wind data for 10 years from Automatic Weather System (AWS) were analyzed for each year. The variation in the annual energy production (AEP) for the 2 MW wind turbine was estimated through statistical work. The result shows that the range of the yearly average wind speed at 15 m above ground level for 10 years was from -22.6% to +13.7%, which is wider range than that in Japan. The coefficient of variation for the AEP was 22.7%, which is about twice of that for the yearly average wind speed. Therefore, for estimating the wind energy potential accurately at a given site, the wind data should be analyzed over a long-term period based on the data from the meteorological station.
Multi-MW wind turbines have very large blades over 40~50 m in length. Some factors like wind shear and tower shadow make an effect on asymmetric loads on the blades. Larger asymmetric loads are produced as the length of blade is getting longer. In this paper, a 2 MW on-shore wind turbine is considered and variations of thrust on 3 blades and rotor hub under wind shear are calculated by using a commercial Bladed S/W and dynamic properties of the thrust variations are investigated. It is shown that the amplitude of the asymmetric thrust on each blade under wind shear is getting larger as the wind speed increases, the frequency of the thrust variation on each blade is same as the one of rotor speed, and the frequency of the thrust variation at rotor hub is 3 times as high as the one of rotor speed.

Power system of Jeju is interconnected to the mainland using HVDC and that is also interconnected to three wind farms. It will be difficult to control of Jeju power system if HVDC is disconnected or HVDC is overhauled under large scale wind farms interconnected. We measured and analysed the power quality of two substation and two wind farms to assess that wind farms have an effect on Jeju system during the HVDC overhaul last May. We concentrated on the power quality like frequency, voltage variation, voltage harmonics, current harmonics, flicker. We can found that the frequency of Jeju system is very unstable during overhaul, so the frequency of Jeju system can be variated easily by wind farm's rapid output power variation. There are some benefits and weak points in power quality between two wind farms because each wind farm is consist of different wind turbines.

In this study future wind resource maps have been produced under climate change scenario using ensemble regional climate model weather research and forecasting(WRF) for the period from 2045 to 2054(mid 21st century). Then various spatiotemporal analysis has been conducted in terms of monthly and diurnal. As a result, monthly variation(monsoon circulation) was larger than diurnal variation(land-sea circulation) throughout the South Korea. Strong wind area with high wind power energy was varied on months and regions. During whole years, strong wind with high wind resource was pronounced at cold(warm) months in particular Gangwon mountainous and coastal areas(southwestern coastal area) driven by strong northwesterly(southwesterly). Projected strong and weak wind were presented in January and September, respectively. Diurnal variation were large over inland and mountainous area while coastal area were small. This new monthly and diurnal variation would be useful to high resource area analysis and long-term operation of wind power according to wind variability in future.
As a first step for aerodynamic analysis of vertical axis wind turbine, dynamic stall characteristics of airfoil was investigated. Dynamic stall of wind turbine airfoil is caused by severe variation of angle of attack and relative velocity of flow around airfoil. Angle of attack and relative velocity can be expressed with tip speed ratio. Variation of angle of attack is strongly dependent on the tip speed ratio. For tip speed ratio, 1.4 and free stream velocity, 15m/s, dynamic stall characteristics of wind turbine airfoil is compared with those of oscillating airfoil having same angle of attack variation.
This paper describes evaluation results of the wind power penetration limit (WPPL) and the wind energy penetration (WEP) in the Mongolian central power system (MCPS). A wind power plant (WPP) in a power system possesses an output power limit because the power system must maintain a balance between the generation and consumption of electricity at all times in order to achieve an adequate level of quality. The instantaneous penetration limit (IPL) of wind generation at a load is determined as the minimum of the three technical constraints: the minimum output, the ramp rate capability, and the spinning reserve of the conventional generating units. In this paper, a WPPL is defined as the maximum IPL divided by the peak load. A maximal variation rate (VR) of wind power is a major factor in determining the IPL, WPPL, and WEP. This paper analyzes the effects of the maximal VR of wind power on the WPPL, WEP, and capacity factor (CF) in the MCPS. The results indicate that a small VR can facilitate a large amount of wind energy while maintaining a high CF with increased wind power penetration.
In both structural and environmental wind engineering, the vertical variation of wind direction is important as it impacts both the torsional response of the high-rise building and the pedestrian level wind environment. In order to systematically investigate the vertical variation of wind directions (i.e., the so-called 'twist effect') induced by hills with idealized geometries, a series of wind-tunnel tests was conducted. The length-to-width aspect ratios of the hill models were 1/3, 1/2, 1, 2 and 3, and the measurements of both wind speeds and directions were taken on a three-dimensional grid system. From the wind-tunnel tests, it has been found that the direction changes and most prominent at the half height of the hill. On the other hand, the characteristic length of the direction change, has been found to increase when moving from the windward zone into the wake. Based on the wind-tunnel measurements, a descriptive model is proposed to calculate both the horizontal and vertical variations of wind directions. Preliminarily validated against the wind-tunnel measurements, the proposed model has been found to be acceptable to describe the direction changes induced by an idealized hill with an aspect ratio close to 1. For the hills with aspect ratios less than 1, while the description of the vertical variation is still valid, the horizontal description proposed by the model has been found unfit.
Kiwifruit vines with broad leaves are easily torn or shed by high-speed wind. In this study, the threshold wind speed at which a cane is broken was investigated experimentally with varying physical parameters of a kiwifruit vine under two different ABL (atmospheric boundary layer) conditions. In addition, the temporal variation of wind-blown young canes was visualized using a high-speed camera. The average threshold wind speeds for ABL types A and B are about 20.5 m/s and 18.9 m/s, respectively. A wind-blown young cane takes periodic up-and-down motion when it is broken off. The mean motion frequency of young canes of the kiwifruit vines was found to be about 4.5Hz.
