This study is conducted to provide the proper analysis method to evaluate the stability of a container crane under wind load. Two analysis method, namely structure analysis and fluid-structure interaction, are adopted to evaluate the stability of a container crane in this investigation. To evaluate the effect of wind load on the stability of the crane, 50-ton class container crane widely used in container terminals is adopted for analysis model and 19-values are considered for wind direction as design parameter. We conduct structure analysis and fluid-structure interaction for a container crane with respect to the wind direction using ANSYS and CFX. Then we compare the uplift forces yielded from two analysis with it yielded from wind tunnel test. The results are as follows: 1) A correlation coefficient between structure analysis and wind tunnel test is lower than 0.65(as $0.29{\sim}0.57$), but between fluid-structure interaction and wind tunnel test is higher than 0.65(as $0.78{\sim}0.86$). 2) There is low correlation between structure analysis and wind tunnel test but very high correlation between fluid-structure interaction and wind tunnel test.
Section model wind tunnel test is currently the main technique to investigate the flutter performance of long-span bridges. Further study about applying the wind tunnel test results to the aerodynamic optimization is still needed. Systematical parameters and test principle of the bridge section model are determined by using three long-span steel truss suspension bridges. The flutter critical wind at different attack angles is obtained through section model flutter test. Under the most unfavorable working condition, tests to investigate the effects that upper central stabilized plate, lower central stabilized plate and horizontal stabilized plate have on the flutter performance of the main beam were conducted. According to the test results, the optimal aerodynamic measure was chosen to meet the requirements of the bridge wind resistance in consideration of safety, economy and aesthetics. At last the credibility of the results is confirmed by full bridge aerodynamic elastic model test. That the flutter reduced wind speed of long-span steel truss suspension bridges stays approximately between 4 to 5 is concluded as a reference for the investigation of the flutter performance of future similar steel truss girder suspension bridges.
The ZG Bridge(preliminary design), with unfavorable aerodynamic stability characteristics, is a truss-stiffened suspension bridge, its critical wind speed of flutter instability is much lower than that of code requirement, In the present paper, based on both aerostatic and aeroelastic section model wind tunnel test, not only effects of some aerodynamic means on aerodynamic stability of its main girder are investigated, but also such effective aerodynamic means of it as flap and plate-like center stabilizer are concluded.
A comparison study between computational-fluid-dynamics simulation and wind tunnel test for a megawatt-class wind turbine is conducted. For the study, flow-field in wake, basic aerodynamic performance, and effect of the yaw error for a 1/86 scaled-down model of the NREL offshore 5 MW wind turbine are numerically calculated using commercial software "FloEFD" with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The computed results are compared to the wind tunnel test performed by the constant-velocity mode for the model. It is shown that discrepancy are found between the two results at lower tip-speed ratio and higher yaw angle, however, the velocity-defection distribution in the wake, the torque coefficient at moderated and high tip-speed ratios are in good agreement with the wind tunnel test.
In wind tunnel experiments, the blockage effect is a very important factor which affects the test results significantly. A number of investigations into this problem, especially on the blockage correction of drag coefficient, have been carried out in the past. However, only a limited number of works have been reported on the wind tunnel blockage effect on wind-induced vibration although it is considered to be fairly important. This paper discusses the aerodynamic characteristics of the square model and square model with corner cut based on a series of the wind tunnel tests with various blockage ratios and angles of attack. From the test results, the aerodynamic behavior of square models with up to 10% blockage ratio are almost the same and square models with up to 10% blockage ratio can be tested as a group which behaves similarly.
Estimated values for maximum lift coefficients of a light airplane, ChanGong-91, derived from an analytical method using a test database, a computational fluid dynamic method, a wind tunnel test, and a flight test are compared. The DATCOM method and VSAERO code are applied as the analytical method and the computational fluid dynamic method, respectively, in order to estimate the maximum lift coefficients of a light airplane. The wind tunnel test is conducted using a 1/14.5 scaled model installed in a closed circuit type wind tunnel. For the flight test approach, the wings-level power-off stall tests are performed to obtain the maximum lift coefficients. As a point of reference for the flight test results of the maximum lift coefficients, the differences of both estimates derived from the DATCOM method and the wind tunnel test data are smaller than those derived from VSAERO.
Since its development in the early 1980's the force balance technique has become a standard method in the efficient determination of structural loads and responses. Its usefulness lies in the simplicity of the physical model, the relatively short records required from the wind tunnel testing and its versatility in the use of the data for different sets of dynamic properties. Its major advantage has been the ability to provide results in a timely manner, assisting the structural engineer to fine-tune their building at an early stage of the structural development. The analysis of the wind tunnel data has evolved from the simple un-coupled system to sophisticated methods that include the correction for non-linear mode shapes, the handling of complex geometry and the handling of simultaneous measurements on multiple force balances for a building group. This paper will review some of the components in the force balance data analysis both in historical perspective and in its current advancement. The basic formulation of the force balance methodology in both frequency and time domains will be presented. This includes all coupling effects and allows the determination of the resultant quantities such as resultant accelerations, as well as various load effects that generally were not considered in earlier force balance analyses. Using a building model test carried out in the wind tunnel as an example case study, the effects of various simplifications and omissions are discussed.
Obvious vortex induced vibration (VIV) was observed during section model wind tunnel tests for a single main cable suspension bridge. An optimized section configuration was found for mitigating excessive amplitude of vibration which is much larger than the one prescribed by Chinese code. In order to verify the maximum amplitude of VIV for optimized girder, a full bridge aeroelastic model wind tunnel test was carried out. The differences between section and full aeroelastic model testing results were discussed. The maximum amplitude derived from section model tests was first interpreted into prototype with a linear VIV approach by considering partial or imperfect correlation of vortex-induced aerodynamic force along span based on Scanlan's semi-empirical linear model. A good consistency between section model and full bridge model was found only by considering the correlation of vortex-induced force along span.
The 'NREL Phase VI' model with a 10.06m diameter was tested in the NASA Ames tunnel to make a reference data of the computational models. The test was conducted at the one rotational speed, blade tip speed 38m/s and the Reynolds number of the sectional airfoils in that test was around 1E6. The 1/5 scale down model of the 'NREL Phase VI' model was used in this paper to study the power characteristics in low Reynolds number region, 0.1E6 ~ 0.4E6 which is achievable range for the conventional wind tunnel facilities. The torque generated by the blade was directly measured by using the torque sensor installed in the rotating axis for a given wind speed and rotational speed. The power characteristics below the stall condition, lambda > 4, was presented in this paper. The power coefficient is very low in the condition below the Re. 0.2E6 and rapidly increases as the Re. increases. And it still increases but the variation is not so big in the condition above the Re. 0.3E6. This results shows that to study the performance of the wind turbine blade by using the scaled down model, the Re. should be larger than the 0.3E6.

Aerodynamic performance of solar wing system has been evaluated through wind tunnel test. The test model has 12 panels, each supported by 2 cables. The panels were installed horizontally flat, and gaps between panels were set constant. Sag ratios of 2% and 5%, and wind directions between $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ were considered. Mass of test model was determined considering the mass of full scale model, and Froude number and Elastic parameter were satisfied by adjusting the mean wind speed. From the wind tunnel test, it was found that the aerodynamic performance of the solar wing system is very dependent on the wind directions and sag ratios. When the sag was 2%, the fluctuating displacements between the wind directions of $0^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ increase proportionally to the square of the mean wind speed, implying buffeting-like vibration and a sudden increase in fluctuating displacement was found at large mean wind speed for the wind directions larger than $40^{\circ}$. When the wind direction was larger than $60^{\circ}$, a sudden increase was found both at low and large mean wind speed. When the sag ratio is 5%, distribution of mean displacements is different from that of sag ratio of 2%, and the fluctuating displacements show very different trend from that of sag ratio of 2%.
