In this paper, a free vibration analysis of functionally graded beam made of porous material is presented. The material properties are supposed to vary along the thickness direction of the beam according to the rule of mixture, which is modified to approximate the material properties with the porosity phases. For this purpose, a new displacement field based on refined shear deformation theory is implemented. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. Based on the present refined shear deformation beam theory, the equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's principle. The rule of mixture is modified to describe and approximate material properties of the FG beams with porosity phases. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions. Illustrative examples are given also to show the effects of varying gradients, porosity volume fraction, aspect ratios, and thickness to length ratios on the free vibration of the FG beams.
Shear wall is the most important component resisting lateral loads imposed to a building by wind or earthquake. In shear walls, lateral load applied to framing is transmitted to sheathing panel through nailed joints between sheathing and framing so that the load is resisted by in-plane shear strength of sheathing. Therefore, nailed joints are the most basic and important component in the viewpoint of stiffness and strength of shear walls. In this study, stiffness and strength of single nailed joint were measured by single shear tests of nailed joints and used as input for theoretical models developed to estimate racking behavior of shear walls. And shear walls were tested to check the accuracy of theoretical models estimating racking resistance of shear walls. Stiffness of nailed joint was affected by grain direction of stud but direction of sheathing panel had little effect. Behavior of nailed joint and shear walls under lateral loads could be represented by three lines. Theoretical model II was more accurate than theoretical model I in estimating racking behavior of shear wall under loads.
Interference effects in five square tall buildings arranged in an L- or T-shaped pattern are investigated in the wind tunnel. Mean and fluctuating shear forces, overturning moments and torsional moment are measured on each building with a force balance mounted at its base. Results are obtained at two values of clear separation between adjacent buildings, at half and a quarter building breadth. It is found that strong interference effect exists on all member buildings, resulting in significant modifications of wind loads as compared with the isolated single building case. Sheltering effect is observed on wind loads acting along the direction of an arm of the "L" or "T" on the inner buildings. However, increase in these wind loads from the isolated single building case is found on the most upwind edge building in the arm when wind blows at a slight oblique angle to the arm. The corner formed by two arms of buildings results in some wind catchment effect leading to increased wind pressure on windward building faces. Interesting interference phenomena such as negative drag force are reported. Interference effects on wind load fluctuations, load spectra and dynamic building responses are also studied and discussed.

In this study, wind characteristics of a shipping container were investigated through the wind tunnel test (high-frequency force balance test), and damage occurrence velocities of various containers with weights were evaluated based on results of the wind tunnel tests. As a result, mean wind force coefficients acting on containers in x-direction increased in the order of 12ft, 20ft, 40ft and 40ft high cube. On the other hand, mean wind force coefficients at y-direction increased in the order of 40ft high cube, 40ft, 20ft and 12ft. It was suggested that the shear layer separated from the corner of windward surface of the container is reattached on the sides of it, and then the mean wind force coefficient is weaker. As a result of the damage occurrence velocity on containers with weights, it was found that the probability of occurrence of sliding is higher rather than that of overturning. Further, the most unfavorable container was 40ft high cube, and the sliding and overturning occurrence velocities were 20.4 m/s and 26.8 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, the regression formula for sliding and overturing occurrence velocitys were proposed based on the results of relationship between weights of containers and damage occurrence velocities. These results are expected to be useful in establishing a guideline for external force estimation acting on container securing equipment and stacking way.
The paper presents a Life-Cycle Cost-based optimization framework for wind-excited tall buildings equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs). The objective is to minimize the Life-Cycle Cost that comprises initial costs of the structure, the control system and costs related to repair, maintenance and downtime over the building's lifetime. The integrated optimization of structural sections and mass ratio of the TMDs is carried out, leading to a set of Pareto optimal solutions. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is that, differently from the traditional optimal design approach, it allows to perform the unified design of both the structure and the control system in a Life Cycle Cost Analysis framework. The procedure quantifies wind-induced losses, related to structural and nonstructural damage, considering the stochastic nature of the loads (wind velocity and direction), the specificity of the structural modeling (e.g., non-shear-type vibration modes and torsional effects) and the presence of the TMDs. Both serviceability and ultimate limit states related to the structure and the TMDs' damage are adopted for the computation of repair costs. The application to a case study tall building allows to demonstrate the efficiency of the procedure for the integrated design of the structure and the control system.

In this article, a mathematical model is developed to predict the dynamic behavior of bio-inspired composite beam with helicoidal orientation scheme under variable axial load using a unified higher order shear deformation beam theory. The geometrical kinematic relations of displacements are portrayed with higher parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Constitutive equation of composite beam is proposed based on plane stress problem. The variable axial load is distributed through the axial direction by constant, linear, and parabolic functions. The equations of motion and associated boundary conditions are derived in detail by Hamilton's principle. Using the differential quadrature method (DQM), the governing equations, which are integro-differential equations are discretized in spatial direction, then they are transformed into linear eigenvalue problems. The proposed model is verified with previous works available in literatures. Parametric analyses are developed to present the influence of axial load type, orthotropic ratio, slenderness ratio, lamination scheme, and boundary conditions on the natural frequencies of composite beam structures. The present enhanced model can be used especially in designing spacecrafts, naval, automotive, helicopter, the wind turbine, musical instruments, and civil structures subjected to the variable axial loads.
In this paper, a refined shear deformation plate theory which eliminates the use of a shear correction factor was presented for FG sandwich plates composed of FG face sheets and an isotropic homogeneous core. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate. The mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness direction by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Based on the present refined shear deformation plate theory, the governing equations of equilibrium are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Numerical illustrations concern buckling behavior of FG sandwiches plates with Metal-Ceramic composition. Parametric studies are performed for varying ceramic volume fraction, volume fraction profiles, Boundary condition, and length to thickness ratios. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
Big tidal differences, which range from 3.0 m to 8.0 m, exist with regional locations at south and west shores of Korea. Under this ocean circumstance, since a large scour may occur due to multi-directional tidal current and transverse stress of the wind, the scour surrounding the wind turbine structure can make instability of the system due to unexpected system vibration. The hydraulic resistance capacity of soils consolidated under different pressures are evaluated by Erosion Function Apparatus (EFA) under unidirectional and bi-directional flows in this study. It was found that the flow direction change affects significantly on the sour rate and critical shear stress, regardless of soil types while the consolidation pressure affects mainly cohesive soil. Among geotechnical parameters, the undrained shear strength can be well-correlated with the hydraulic resistance capacity, regardless soil type while the shear wave velocity shows the proportional relationships with the hydraulic resistance capacities of fine grained soil and coarse grained soil, respectively.
In the bolted connections, bolt placements are generally described and are generally made in the direction of design effects and in the perpendicular direction to design effects. In these both directions, the reliability of the distance of bolts to the edges of connection plate and the distance of bolts to each other is investigated for high strength steel connections built up with high strength bolts in this study. For this purpose, simple SL (bearing type shear connection) and SLP (bearing type shear connection for body-fit bolts) type steel connections with St 52 grade steel plates with 8 different thicknesses and with 8.8D grade high strength bolts (HV) were constituted and analyzed under H (Dead Loads+Live Loads+Snow Loads+Roof Loads) and HZ (H Loads+Wind Loads+Earthquake Loads) loadings. Geometric properties, material properties and design actions were taken as random variables. Monte Carlo Simulation method was used to compute failure risk and the first order second moment method was used to determine the reliability indexes of those different distances describing the placement of bolts. Results obtained from computations have been presented in graphics and in a Table. Then, they were compared with some values proposed by some structural codes. Finally, new equations were constituted for minimum and maximum values of distances describing bolt placement by regression analyses performed on those results.
In this research work, nonlinear thermal buckling behavior of functionally graded (FG) plates is explored based a new higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). The present model has just four unknowns, by using a new supposition of the displacement field which enforces undetermined integral variables. A shear correction factor is, thus, not necessary. A power law distribution is employed to express the disparity of volume fraction of material distributions. Three kinds of thermal loading, namely, uniform, linear, and nonlinear and temperature rises over z-axis direction are examined. The non-linear governing equations are resolved for plates subjected to simply supported boundary conditions at the edges. The results are approved with those existing in the literature. Impacts of various parameters such as aspect and thickness ratios, gradient index, type of thermal load rising, on the non-dimensional thermal buckling load are all examined.
