  • A microstrip patch array designed at 35 GHz is described for use in the detection of the position of moving targets. To obtain wide detection range, the array is arranged to give a narrow beamwidth in the elevation plane and a wide beamwidth on the azimuth plane. This can be achieved by aligning the electric field plane of each element to the array axis. Employing a 3 dB-tapered feed network, the array has a side lobe level of less than -20 dB and wider azimuth beam width of 12.8$^{\circ}$ simultaneously.

  • The periodic transmission spectrum of a solid etalon for wide-band capability is analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. In the transmission spectrum with an incident area of a photodetector, the peak wavelength and transmittance are deeply dependent on the incident angle and the divergence angle of the input laser beam. A thermal adjustment for a solid etalon is an optional way to control the transmission spectrum instead of the inefficient fine-angle alignment. In the result, we present the deviations of free spectral range (FSR) by the change in angle and temperature over wide wavelength range.

  • Ultra Wide Bandwidth (UWB) spread-spectrum techniques will playa key role in short range wireless connectivity supporting high bit rates availability and low power consumption. UWB can be used in the design of wireless local and personal area networks providing advanced integrated multimedia services to nomadic users within hot-spot areas. Thus the assessment of the possible interference caused by UWB devices on already existing narrowband and wideband systems is fundamental to ensure nonconflicting coexistence and, therefore, to guarantee acceptance of UWB technology worldwide. In this paper, we study the coexistence issues between an indoor UWB-based system (hot-spot) and outdoor point to point (PP) links and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) systems operating in the 3.5 - 5.0 GHz frequency range. We consider a realistic UWB master/slave system architecture and we show through computer simulation, that in all practical cases UWB system can coexist with PP and FWA without causing any dangerous interference.

  • In this paper, a compact S type resonator is presented, where the proposed resonator is surface micromachined over transmission lines or other resonators, in order to obtain a wide range of possible electromagnetic couplings. The structure has been applied in two compact, bandstop and bandpass filters with moderate fractional bandwidths (FBW) of 20% and 25% respectively. The bandstop filter presented, was designed by the combination of two design methods in order to obtain the proposed fractional bandwidth, where traditionally, coupled resonator bandstop filters have been used for narrow stopbands. The bandpass filter illustrates the use of the proposed suspended resonator structure to obtain a wide range of electric type coupling coefficients, and external quality factors for the filter. This paper describes the design methodology, concepts and fabrication method proposed for the design of these filters.

  • In this paper, authors introduce about Wide Range Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) system using Automatic Identification System (AIS). In order to develop the prototype of Wide Range VIS system, Korean satellite is used for data communication system for AIS. In this system, ship position obtained by using GPS is reported automatically to VTS center through Korean satellite. By using this system, VTS center can cover more wide area than the case using radar only. And the uncertainty of information is decrease. The results of test show the good possibility of VTS using satellite and AIS.

  • Flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) phenomenon of low alloy carbon steels in nuclear power plant has been known as one of major degradation mechanisms. It has a potential to cause nuclear pipe rupture accident which may directly impact on the plant reliability and safety. Recently, the equipotential switching direct current potential drop (ES-DCPD) method has been developed, by the present authors, as a method to monitor wall loss in a piping. This method can rapidly monitor the thinning of piping, utilizing either the wide range monitoring (WiRM) or the narrow range monitoring (NaRM) technique. WiRM is a method to monitor wide range of straight piping, whereas NaRM focuses significantly on a narrow range such as an elbow. WiRM and NaRM can improve the reliability of the current FAC screening method that is based on computer modeling on fluid flow conditions. In this paper, the measurements by ES-DCPD are performed with signal sensitivity analyses in the laboratory environment for extended period and showed the viability of ES-DCPD for real plant applications.

  • In this study, a fast charger for electric vehicle with wide charging voltage range is proposed. To achieve high efficiency, three-level topologies are employed for the AC-DC and DC-DC converters. Given that the output range of the DC-DC converter in fast chargers is quite wide, the circulating current of conventional three-level converter will increase under low voltage condition. The proposed hybrid switching method mitigates this issue. When a coupled inductor is used on the output side, the circulating current is further reduced, and the switches $S_2$, $S_3$, $S_6$, and $S_7$ achieve turning-off under the ZCS condition. Experimental results from a 50 kW prototype are provided to validate the proposed charger, and a rated efficiency of 95.9% is obtained.

  • This paper presents a wide band, fine-resolution digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) with an on-chip 3-D solenoid inductor using the 0.13 ${\mu}m$ digital CMOS process. The on-chip solenoid inductor is vertically constructed by using Metal and Via layers with a horizontal scalability. Compared to a spiral inductor, it has the advantage of occupying a small area and this is due to its 3-D structure. To control the frequency of the DCO, active capacitor and active inductor are tuned digitally. To cover the wide tuning range, a three-step coarse tuning scheme is used. In addition, the DCO gain needs to be calibrated digitally to compensate for gain variations. The DCO with solenoid inductor is fabricated in 0.13 ${\mu}m$ process and the die area of the solenoid inductor is 0.013 $mm^2$. The DCO tuning range is about 54 % at 4.1 GHz, and the power consumption is 6.6 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage. An effective frequency resolution is 0.14 kHz. The measured phase noise of the DCO output at 5.195 GHz is -110.61 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset.

  • Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have higher torque and superior output power per volume than other types of AC motors. They are commonly used for applications that require a large output power and a wide range of speed. For precise control of PMSMs, knowing the accurate position of the rotor is essential, and normally position sensors such as a resolver or an encoder are employed. On the other hand, the position sensors make the driving system expensive and unstable if the attached sensor malfunctions. Therefore, sensorless algorithms are widely researched nowadays, to reduce the cost and cope with sensor failure. This paper proposes a sensorless algorithm that can be applied to a wide range of speed. The proposed method features a robust operation at low-speed as well as high-speed ranges by employing a gain adjustment scheme and intermittent voltage pulse injection method. In the proposed scheme the position estimation gain is tuned by a closed loop manner to have stable operation in tough driving environment. The proposed algorithm is fully verified by various experiments done with a 1 kW outer rotor-type PMSM.

  • This work proposes a highly efficient sensorless motor driver chip for various permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) in a wide power range. The motor driver chip is composed of two important parts. The digital part is a sensorless controller consisting mainly of an angle estimation block and a speed control block. The analog part consists of a gate driver, which is able to sense the phase current of a motor. The sensorless algorithms adapted in this paper include a sliding mode observer (SMO) method that has high robust characteristics regarding parameter variations of PMSMs. Fabricated SMO chips detect back electromotive force signals. Furthermore, motor current-sensing blocks are included with a 10-bit successive approximation analog-to-digital converter and various gain current amplifiers for proper sensorless operations. Through a fabricated SMO chip, we were able to demonstrate rated powers of 32 W, 200 W, and 1,500 W.
