Effect of Lactic Acid Bacteria Inoculation on Fermentation Characteristics of Whole Crop Barley Silage

  • An experiment was carried out to determine the homofermentative activity of Lactobacillus plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 on the ensiling of whole crop barley (WCB). The crude protein in the silages was slightly higher in the KCC-10 and KCC-19 treatments compared to the control, but there was no significant difference between the two inoculant-treated silages. Nutrient parameters such as acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber and in vitro dry matter digestibility in L. plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 treated silages did not differ from those in the control silage. The lactic acid content increased in KCC-10 and KCC-19 treated silage when compared with the control silage but the contents of acetic acid and butyric acid produced in KCC-10 and KCC-19 treated silages were similar with the control silage. Further, the number of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in KCC-10 treated silage demonstrated a significant increase when compared to the control. Especially, KCC-19 treated silage showed greater lactic acid bacterial growth potential. Other microbes such as yeast and fungi were not detected in KCC-10 and KCC-19 treated WCB silages. Hence, this study suggests that the addition of L. Plantarum KCC-10 and KCC-19 to the WCB silage can improve fermentation quality for the production of high-quality silage.

Effects of Cutting Length on Fermentation Characteristics and Aerobic Stability of Whole Crop Rice Silage

  • This study was conducted to estimate the effect of different cutting lengths on fermentation characteristics and aerobic stability of whole crop rice (WCR) silage. The WCR was harvested at the yellow ripe stage (43.7%, DM), and then cut at 5 (R05), 10 (R10), and 20 cm (R20) of the theoretical length of cut with no cut WCR (R60). Each forage was ensiled into 20 L mini bucket silo (5 kg) for 150 days in quadruplicates. The cutting lengths were not affected the chemical compositions of WCR silage (p > 0.05). The pH (p < 0.001) and concentration of ammonia-N (p = 0.022) in WCR silage were increased linearly with the increase of cutting length. The concentration of lactate had quadratic effect (p = 0.007), which was highest in R20 silage (p < 0.05). The concentration of acetate was increased linearly (p = 0.014), but the concentration of butyrate was decreased linearly (p = 0.033). The lactic acid bacteria count was decreased linearly (p = 0.017), and yeast count had quadratic effect (p = 0.009), which was the highest in R20 silage (p < 0.05). Aerobic stability had strong quadratic effect (p < 0.001), which was the highest in R20 silage (p < 0.05). In conclusion, R60 silage had highest pH by a linear increase of ammonia-N concentration and led to low aerobic stability. While R20 silage had the lowest pH by high lactate concentration and led to high aerobic stability.

총체맥류 분쇄기 개발 및 분쇄 총체맥류 사일리지의 품질 특성 (Development of Crushing Device for Whole Crop Silage and the Characteristics of Crushed Whole Crop Silage)

  • 본 연구에서는 주로 한(육)우, 낙농 등에서 이용되는 총체맥류 조사료를 돼지, 닭 등에게까지 확대 이용 가능성을 모색하기 위하여 수행하였다. 이를 위해 총체맥류를 분쇄할 수 있는 시스템을 개발하였고 분쇄시스템을 통해 분쇄한 총체맥류를 비닐 백에 밀봉 저장한 후 사료가치를 분석하였다. 총체맥류는 Fig. 4에서 보는 바와 같이 수확 직후 줄기, 잎, 곡실 등을 분리하지 않고 원형 그대로 분쇄장치에 투입하였다. 분쇄되어 배출된 총체맥류의 분쇄상태를 분석한 결과 알곡 20%, 10 mm 이상 4%, 5~10 mm 27%, 5 mm 이하 49%로 매우 미세하게 분쇄되는 것으로 나타나 단위동물의 배합사료에 일정비율 혼합하여 급이 하는 것이 가능할 것으로 판단되었다. 분쇄 직후 밀봉하여 상온에서 저장한 총체맥류 사일리지는 약 3개월이 지난 시점에서 품질을 분석하였다. 시험에 사용한 총체맥류는 새쌀보리와 금강밀이다. 분쇄된 총체맥류의 발효를 촉진하기 위하여 하나에는 발효제를 접종하였고 다른 하나는 발효제를 접종하지 않았다. 발효제를 접종한 분쇄 총체 새쌀보리의 조단백질, 조지방, 조섬유, NDF, ADF, 리그닌, 셀룰로스 함량은 2.45%, 1.61%, 8.95%, 16.94%, 9.52%, 1.01%, 8.51%로 나타났으며 TDN, RFV는 81.38%, 447.5%로 나타났다. 발효제를 접종하지 않은 총체 새쌀보리의 조단백질, 조지방, 조섬유, NDF, ADF, 리그닌, 셀룰로스 함량은 2.57%, 1.62%, 9.61%, 18.25%, 10.13%, 1.10%, 9.04%로 나타났으며 TDN, RFV는 80.90%, 412.9%로 나타났다. 발효제를 접종한 분쇄 총체 금강밀의 조단백질, 조지방, 조섬유, NDF, ADF, 리그닌, 셀룰로스 함량은 2.43%, 1.27%, 10.99%, 19.49%, 11.23%, 1.46%, 9.77%로 나타났으며 TDN, RFV는 80.03%, 382.6%로 나타났다. 발효제를 접종하지 않은 총체금강밀의 조단백질, 조지방, 조섬유, NDF, ADF, 리그닌, 셀룰로스 함량은 2.28%, 1.44%, 10.08%, 18.02%, 10.44%, 1.26%, 9.18%로 나타났으며 TDN, RFV는 80.65%, 416.9%로 나타났다. 발효제를 접종한 것과 발효제를 접종하지 않은 분쇄 총체맥류 사일리지의 상대적 사료가치를 평가한 결과 새쌀보리의 경우 발효제를 첨가한 것이 높았으며, 금강밀의 경우 발효제를 첨가하지 않은 것이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 총체맥류 분쇄 사일리지를 조제할 때 품종에 따라 발효제의 첨가 여부를 결정하는 것이 중요할 것으로 판단되었다. 또한 Ju 등(2009, 2011)의 TDN과 RFV를 비교 분석한 결과 발효제의 접종 여부와 관계없이 분쇄 총체맥류 사일리지의 TDN과 RFV가 월등히 높은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 총체맥류 사일리지 조제시 수확${\rightarrow}$분쇄${\rightarrow}$밀봉의 과정을 거쳐 사일리지를 조제하는 것이 조사료 이용효율을 높일 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

수확시기별 예건시간에 따른 귀리의 수분함량과 사일리지 품질변화 (Effect of Pre-wilting Time on the Change of Moisture Content and Its Silage Quality at Different Harvest Stages of Whole Crop Oat)

  • 이 연구는 고품질 귀리 사일리지의 제조를 위한 수확시기별 적정 예건시간을 도출하고자 수행하였다. 시험은 국내 육성품종인 삼한귀리를 가을에 파종하고 이듬해 봄인 출수 후 20일 부터 10일 간격으로 3회에 걸쳐 수확하여 각 수확시기별로 0, 4, 8, 32시간동안 예건을 실시하였으며, 각 예건시간별 식물체의 수분변화와 사일리지 제조 후 품질을 분석하였다. 그 결과 귀리는 출수 후 20일 정도에 수확할 경우 4시간 정도 포장예건을 하고, 출수 후 30일 정도에 수확할 경우에는 사일리지 제조에 적합한 수분함량에 도달하여 예건이 필요하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 사일리지도 수분함량이 약 55~65% 정도가 도달한 시기에 수확한 처리구나 그 수준에 도달하도록 예건한 처리구에서 전체적인 사료가치가 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 사일리지 품질 평가기준의 중요한 요인인 pH와 유기산은 수분변화에 따라 아주 큰 변이를 보였는데 55~65%의 수분조건에서 젖산 함량이 높게 나타났고, 초산과 낙산 함량이 낮았다. 따라서 귀리는 출수 후 20일 경에 수확 시에는 4시간 정도 포장예건을 하는 것이 바람직하고, 그 이후에는 바로 수확하여 곤포로 제조하여도 양질의 사일리지를 생산할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Effects of Ensiling Fermentation and Aerobic Deterioration on the Bacterial Community in Italian Ryegrass, Guinea Grass, and Whole-crop Maize Silages Stored at High Moisture Content

  • The effects of storage period and aerobic deterioration on the bacterial community were examined in Italian ryegrass (IR), guinea grass (GG), and whole-crop maize (WM) silages. Direct-cut forages were stored in a laboratory silo for 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, and 120 d without any additives; live counts, content of fermentation products, and characteristics of the bacterial community were determined. 2,3-Butanediol, acetic acid, and lactic acid were the dominant fermentation products in the IR, GG, and WM silages, respectively. The acetic acid content increased as a result of prolonged ensiling, regardless of the type of silage crop, and the changes were distinctively visible from the beginning of GG ensiling. Pantoea agglomerans, Rahnella aquatilis, and Enterobacter sp. were the major bacteria in the IR silage, indicating that alcoholic fermentation may be due to the activity of enterobacteria. Staphylococcus sciuri and Bacillus pumilus were detected when IR silage was spoiled, whereas between aerobically stable and unstable silages, no differences were seen in the bacterial community at silo opening. Lactococcus lactis was a representative bacterium, although acetic acid was the major fermentation product in the GG silage. Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus brevis, and Morganella morganii were suggested to be associated with the increase in acetic acid due to prolonged storage. Enterobacter cloacae appeared when the GG silage was spoiled. In the WM silage, no distinctive changes due to prolonged ensiling were seen in the bacterial community. Throughout the ensiling, Weissella paramesenteroides, Weissella confusa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were present in addition to L. plantarum, L. brevis, and L. lactis. Upon deterioration, Acetobacter pasteurianus, Klebsiella variicola, Enterobacter hormaechei, and Bacillus gibsonii were detected. These results demonstrate the diverse bacterial community that evolves during ensiling and aerobic spoilage of IR, GG, and WM silages.

PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF GRASS SILAGE WITH WHOLE-CROP CEREAL SILAGE FOR GROWING BEEF CATTLE

  • A study was conducted to investigate the effect of different inclusion levels of urea treated whole-crop wheat silage (UWCWS) in grass silage based rations on the performance of growing beef cattle. The winter wheat (variety, Riband) was harvested (in the summer of 1991) at a dry matter proportion of 520 g/kg and treated with feed grade urea at the rate of 37 kg/tonne crop dry matter and preserved in a heavy duty plastic bag using a silo press. The urea treated whole crop wheat silage (UWCWS) was mixed with grass silage to replace 0.00 (S100), 0.33 (S33) and 0.67 (S67) parts of the forage dry matter and fed ad libitum in a cross over design to 18 Simmental X Holstein Friesian growing beef animals. Two energy sources {one high in starch, rolled barley (RB) and one high in digestible fibre, sugar beet pulp (SBP)} were fed to supply sufficient energy for the efficient use of nitrogen by the rumen micro-organisms. The data on DMIF (dry matter intake of forage), TDMI (total dry matter intake), DLWG (daily live weight gain), FCR (feed conversion ratio) were recorded and faecal samples were collected to determine the digestibility coefficients. Results revealed that with the inclusion of UWCW in the animals' diets the DMI of the forage was significantly increased (p < 0.05). The highest DMIF was found in the treatment "S33" ($6.28{\pm}0.25kg$) where 67% of the silage dry matter was replaced with the UWCW and the lowest value for DMIF was observed in the control treatment ($5.03{\pm}0.23kg$). The DLWG did not differ significantly between the treatments. However, treatment "S100" showed a trend towards a superior DLWG. Feed conversion ratio in the control treatment differed significantly from "S67" and "S33". The addition of the UWCW in the animals' diet resulted in the lower FCR There was no effect of type of energy supplement on any aspect of performance either overall or in interaction with grass silage: UWCWS ratio. The regression and correlation coefficients for DMIF (r = 5.22 + 0.0184x*), DLWG (r = $1.04-0.00086x^{NS}$) and FCR (r = 4.78 = 0.022x*) on the inclusion of UWCW in the diet were calculated. The effect of the inclusion of UWCW on the overall digestibility coefficients was significant (p < 0.05). The addition of the UWCWS in the diet decreased the digestibility of the DM, OM, ADF and NFE but effect on the protein digestibility was non significant. The results of present study suggests that a DLWG slightly over 1 kg can be achieved with UWCW during the store period (period in which animal performance targets are low especially during winter) and the prediction of ME was overestimated as the high intake of DM did not reflect in improved animal performance.

Effect of Replacing Corn Silage with Whole Crop Rice Silage in Total Mixed Ration on Intake, Milk Yield and Its Composition in Holsteins

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of replacing whole crop corn silage (WCCS) with whole crop rice silage (WCRS) in the total mixed ration (TMR) on nutrient intake, milk yield and its composition in Holstein cows. The Chucheong rice variety (Oryza sativa L. Japonica) and corn (Pioneer 32 P75) were harvested at yellow-ripe stage and were ensiled in round bales and in trench silos, respectively. Two TMR containing either WCCS or WCRS were prepared. These diets were randomly assigned to 16 midlactating Holstein cows (8 cows per treatment) and were fed for 120 days. The first 20 days were used for dietary adaptation and for the next 100 days daily feed intake, milk yield and its composition were recorded. The pH, lactic acid, NDF, ADF, CP, Ca and P contents were similar in WCRS and WCCS. The DM, ash and EE contents of WCRS were greater compared with WCCS. Nutrient (DM, NDF, TDN and CP) intakes were similar in cows fed WCCS- and WCRS-based TMR. Daily and 4% fat corrected milk yield were not affected by the treatments. Milk composition (percent milk fat, protein, lactose and total solids) was similar in cows fed either WCCS- or WCRSbased TMR. The concentration of milk urea N was greater in cows fed WCRS-based TMR than those fed WCCS-based TMR. In conclusion, round-baled WCRS can replace WCCS in the diet of mid- to late-lactating Holsteins without any deleterious effects on feed consumption, milk yield and its composition. The present findings raise the possibility that WCRS can be used as an alternative roughage source in the diets of dairy cows in countries with surplus rice production.

보리 사일리지용 미생물의 발효능력 평가 (Evaluation of Fermentation Ability of Microbes for Whole Crop Barley Silage Inoculant)

  • 본 시험은 사일리지 조제시 품질 개선을 위한 젖산균 첨가제를 개발하기 위하여 2000년부터 2002년까지 국립축산과학원 초지사료과 조사료 분석실험실에서 수행하였다. 보리는 한국에서 중요한 식량작물로서 대부분이 식량으로 이용되나 곡실부분이 많아 가축의 사료로도 활용되며 특히 총체보리로 하여 반추가축의 조사료로 활용되고 있다. 본 시험은 우량 보리 사일리지에서 젖산균을 수집하여 0.02% $NaN_2$가 함유된 MRS agar에 도말하여 생장을 보며 1차 선발한 후 MRS broth에서 다시 배양하여 생장 능력과 산생성 능력을 평가하여 총 4종의 균주를 선발하였다. 선발된 균주는 그람 양성, 로드형, 카탈라제를 생성하지 않으며 생화학적 특성과 기질 이용성을 평가한 결과 Lactobacillus plantarum으로 판명되었다. 선발된 균주는 시중 판매되는 첨가제 등과 함께 호숙기의 보리 사일리지에 첨가하여 2개월후 사일리지의 품질을 조사한 결과 B2-2 미생물 처리구애서 pH가 낮았고 젖산함량도 높게 나타났다. 사일리지 품질 점수와 등급에 있어서도 B2-2 처리구가 높게 나타났다. 따라서 이상의 결과를 종합하여 볼 때 B2-2 균주는 보리 사일리지용 우량 미생물로 추천되었다.

청보리 사일리지 급여가 Holstein 젖소 미경산우의 번식 성적에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Feeding of Whole Crop Barley Silage on the Reproductive Performances of Holstein Heifers)

  • This study was carried out between 2008 and 2009 in four dairy farms to investigate the effect of feeding of whole crop barley silage on the reproductive performance of Holstein heifers. Two diets, mixed hay or whole crop barley silage separately from concentrate were fed 6-month old Holstein heifers (=37). In control group (=CON), heifers (n=16) were fed 6 kg (/head) mixed hay and 4 kg (/head) commercial diet. In whole crop barley silage group (=WBS), heifers (n=21) were fed 10 kg (/head) whole crop barley silage, 4 kg (/head) mixed hay and 2 kg (/head) commercial diet. To manage body weight gain, the body condition score of heifers were measured every month. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Body weight in CON and WBS heifers at 13-, 14-, 15- and 17-month old were $340{\pm}17.9$ and $342{\pm}13.6\;kg$, $356{\pm}15.7$ and $366{\pm}14.7\;kg$, $382{\pm}13.1$ and $387{\pm}14.4\;kg$, and $429{\pm}15.0$ and $417{\pm}10.3\;kg$, respectively. 2. Body condition score in CON and WBS heifers at 9-, 12-, 15- and 17-month old were $2.88{\pm}0.04$ and $2.80{\pm}0.04$, $2.88{\pm}0.04$ and $2.80{\pm}0.04$, $2.89{\pm}0.08$ and $3.00{\pm}0.07$, and $2.89{\pm}0.08$ and $3.00{\pm}0.07$, respectively. 3. Average age of sexual maturity in CON and WBS heifers were $437.3{\pm}9.9$days and $939.6{\pm}12.5$days, WBS group heifers were significantly shorter (p<0.05) than CON group heifers. 4. First-service conception rates in CON or WBS group were 81.3% (13/16) and 66.7% (14121), respectively, and cumulative conception rate to 2nd artificial insemination were 87.5% for CON and 85.7% for WBS group. Conception rate was not different between treatments.

Comparison of Productivity and Feed Value of Silage Corn according to the Cutting Height

  • Corn silage is extensively utilized in ruminant feeding on a global scale, with substantial research efforts directed towards enhancing its nutritional worth and managing moisture content. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of normal cutting height and elevated cutting height on whole-crop corn silage. Corn was harvested at heights of 15 cm and 45 cm above the ground, respectively, 45 days after heading. The harvested corn was cut into 2-3 cm lengths and packed into 20-liter plastic silos in triplicate. The results showed that dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), water soluble carbohydrates (WSC), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of C45 were significantly higher than those of the control, while the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was significantly lower in C45 (p<0.05). The C15 had higher yields than C45 (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield of whole-crop corn silage. The increase in cutting height resulted in a larger change in moisture content and NDF per centimeter. After 60 days-ensiling, C45 showed significantly lower NH3-N concentrations. Moreover, C45 had significantly higher lactic acid concentration, lactic acid/acetic acid ratio, and lactic acid bacteria count compared to the control. Mold was not detected and the yeast count was less than 2 log10 cfu/g fresh matter in both control and C45. In summary, C45 improved the feeding value and fermentation quality of whole-crop corn silage at the expense of forage productivity.
