  • We report the white light emission from the multilayer organic electroluminescent(EL) device using exciplex emission. The exciplex at 500nm originated between poly(N-vinylcarvazole)(PVK) and 2,5-bis(5'-tert-butyl-2-benzoxazoly)thiophene(BBOT) and exciplex of 50nm originated from N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-(3-methyphenyl)-1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine(TPD) and BBOT were observed. Also, the energy transfer from PVK to BBOT and poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) in mixed emitting materials was occurred. The electroluminescence(EL) spectra of organic EL device which have a device structure of ITO/CuPc(5nm)/emitting layer(100nm)/BBOT(30nm)/LiF(1.4nm)/Al(200nm) were slightly changed as a function of the applied voltage. The luminance fo 12.3 ${\mu}$W/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was achieved at 20V and EL spectrum measured at 20V corresponds to Commission Internationale de L\`Eclairage(CIE) coordinates of x=0.29 and y=0.353.

  • In order to achieve white emission from organic light emitting devices (OLEDs), five distinct structures were fabricated and tested. The white emission was obtained using two different color-emitting materials (yellow from rubrene-doped $Alq_3$ and blue from DPVBi) with or without a carrier-blocking layer. For enhancing the red emission, two types of devices with three-color emitting materials were fabricated. The white emission, close to the CIE coordinate of (0.3,0.3), was achieved by using two blocking layers as well that as without a blocking layer. This paper covers the subject of controlling the location of exciton recombination zone. It has been found that there is a trade-off in that the devices with three color emitting layers do not show as much luminescence efficiency compared to those with two color emitting layers, but rather, show distinct red emission in the resultant emission spectra. The highest power efficiency was measured to be 1.15lm/W at 2,000 $cd/m^2$ for a structure with two color-emitting layers.

  • We synthesized bis (2-methyl-8-quinolinolato)(triphenylsiloxy) aluminum (III) (SAlq), a blue-emitting material having a high luminous efficiency, through a homogeneous-phase reaction. The photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) spectra of SAlq show two peaks at 454 nm and 477 nm. Efficient white light-emitting devices are fabricated by doping SAlq with a red fluorescent dye of 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-{2-(2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-benzo[i,j]quinolizin-8yl) vinyl}-4H-pyran (DCM2). The incomplete energy transfer from blue-emitting SAlq to red-emitting DCM2 results in light-emission of both blue and orange colors. Devices with the structure of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/SAlq:DCM2 (30 nm, 0.5 %)/$Alq_3$ (20 nm)/LiF (0.5 nmj/Al show EL peaks at 456 nm and 482 nm originating from SAlq and at 570 nm from DCM2, resulting in the Commission Internationale d'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of (0.32, 0.37). The device exhibits an external quantum efficiency of about 2.3 % and a luminous efficiency of about 2.41m/W at 100 $cd/m^2$. A maximum luminance of about 23,800 $cd/m^2$ is obtained at the bias voltage of 15 V.

  • We have fabricated organic white light emitting diodes by mixing two colors from very thin rubrene doped and non-doped DPVBi layers. The device structure was ITO/2-TNATA(15 nm)/${\alpha}$-NPD(35 nm)/DPVBi:rubrene(5 nm)/DPVBi(30 nm)/$Alq_{3}(5\;nm)$/BCP(5 nm)/LiF(0.5 nm)/Al(150 nm). The yellow-emitting rubrene of 0.7 wt % was doped into the blue-emitting DPVBi host for the white light. CIE coordinate of the device was (0.31, 0.33) at 8 V. The color coordinates were stable at wide ranges of driving voltages. The luminance was over $1,000\;cd/m^{2}$ at 8 V and increases to $14,500\;cd/m^{2}$ at 12 V. The maximum current efficiency of the device was 8.2 cd/A at $200\;cd/m^{2}$.

  • We report the fabrication and the characterization of white organic light-emitting devices consisting of a red-emitting layer of a new DCM derivative doped into 4,4'bis[N-(1-napthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]-biphenyl (${\alpha}-NPD$) and a blue-emitting layer of 1,4-bis(2,2-diphenyl vinyl)benzene (DPVBi). The device structure is ITO/PEDOT:PSS/${\alpha}-NPD$ (50 nm)/${\alpha}-NPD$:DCM (5 nm, 0.2 %)/DPVBi (x)/Alq3 (40 nm)/LiF (0.5 nm)/Al. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra consist of two broad peaks around 470 nm and 580 nm with the spectral emission depending on the thickness of DPVBi. The device with the DPVBi thickness of about 20 nm show a white light-emission with the Commission Internationale d'Eclairage(CIE) chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.36). The external quantum efficiency is 2.6% and luminous efficiency is 2.0 lm/W at a luminance of 100 $cd/m^{2}$. The maximum luminance is about 30,270 $cd/m^{2}$ at 13.9 V.

  • The authors have demonstrated the various characteristics of hybrid white organic light-emitting diodes (HWOLED) using fluorescent blue and phosphorescent red emitters. We also demonstrated that two devices showed different characteristics in accordance with thickness of the 4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazole-biphenyl (CBP) spacer (CS) inserted between the blue and the red emitting layer. It was found that the device with a CS thickness of 70 $\AA$ showed a current efficiency 2.5 times higher than that of the control device with a CS thickness of 30 $\AA$ by preventing the triplet Dexter energy transfer from the red to the blue emitting layer. The HWOLED with the CS thickness of 70 $\AA$ exhibited a maximum luminance of 24500 cd/$m^2$, a maximum current efficiency of 42.9 cd/A, a power efficiency of 37.5 lm/W, and Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinates of (0.37, 0.42).

  • In this study, the white organic light emitting device was fabricated using ITO/a-NPD:DCM/a-NPD/BCP/Alq3/Al structure. Blue emission by a-NPD and orange emission by energy transfer between a-NPD and DCM embodied the white emission. The optimal structure of the white OLED is ITO/a-NPD:DCM(50$\square$)/a-NPD(150$\AA$)/BCP(100$\square$)/Alq$_3$(200$\square$)/Al. We varied the doping concentration of DCM properly and obtained high purity white emitting light. The CIE coordinate and maximum luminance of the devices was obtained (0.310, 0.333) and 400cd/$m^2$ at 11Volt.
