This study was conducted to determine the effects of artificial lighting sources on vegetative growth of Phalaenopsis and Doritaenopsis (an intergeneric hybrid of Doritis and Phalaenopsis) orchids. One - month - old plants were cultivated under fluorescent lamps, cool - white light - emitting diodes (LEDs), or warm - white LEDs at 80 and $160{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. The blue (400 - 500 nm) : green (500 - 600 nm) : red (600 - 700 nm) : far - red (700 - 800 nm) ratios of the fluorescent lamps, cool-white LEDs, and warm-white LEDs were 1 : 1.3 : 0.8 : 0.1, 1 : 1.3 : 0.6 : 0.1, and 1 : 2.7 : 2.3 : 0.4, respectively. Each light treatment was maintained for 16 weeks in a closed plant-production system maintained at $28^{\circ}C$ with a 12 h photoperiod. The longest leaf span, as well as the leaf length and width of the uppermost mature leaf, were observed in plants treated with warm-white LEDs. Plants grown under fluorescent lamps had longer and wider leaves with a greater leaf span than plants grown under cool-white LEDs, while the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II was higher under cool-white LEDs. The vegetative responses affected by different lighting sources were similar at both 80 and $160{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Leaf span and root biomass were increased by the higher light intensity in both cultivars, while the relative chlorophyll content was decreased. These results indicate that relatively high intensity light can promote vegetative growth of young Phalaenopsis plants, and that warm - white LEDs, which contain a high red-light ratio, are a better lighting source for the growth of these plants than the cool-white LEDs or fluorescent lamps. These results could therefore be useful in the selection of artificial lighting to maximize vegetative growth of Phalaenopsis plants in a closed plant - production system.
To realize a high luminous efficacy and a high emission color purity for the white-LEDs, the understanding for luminescence properties of the phosphors is significantly important because the performance of white-LEDs is directly affected by the luminescence properties of the phosphors. In this paper, therefore, we reviewed some commercially available $Eu^{2+}$- and $Ce^{3+}$- activated phosphors and discussed for the luminescence properties of these phosphors.
White LEDs (light-emitting diodes) are promising new-generation light sources which can replace conventional lamps due to their high reliability, low energy consumption and eco-friendly effects. This paper briefly reviews recent progress of oxy/nitride host phosphor and quantum dot materials with broad excitation band characteristics for phosphor-converted white LEDs. Among oxy/nitride host materials, $M_2Si_5N_8:Eu^{2+}$, $MAlSiN_3:Eu^{2+}$ M-SiON(M=Ca, Sr, Ba), ${\alpha}/{\beta}-SiAlON:Eu^{2+}$ are excellent phosphors for white LED using blue-emitting chip. They have very broad excitation bands in the range of 440-460 nm and exhibit emission from green to red. In this paper, In this review we focus on recent developments in the crystal structure, luminescence and applications of the oxy/nitride phosphors for white LEDs. In addition, the application prospects and current trends of research and development of quantum dot phosphors are also discussed.
Light fermentation has been conducted under different light conditions such as normal dark light, white light, and light emitting diodes (LEDs) various color (blue, green, red, white on blueberry powder with fermenting bacteria Bacillus subtilis (B2). The bacteria B2 was isolated and identified by 16S rRNA sequencing method. RYRP biologically converted to secondary metabolites through light fermentation in the presence of Bacillus subtilis, the bacteria actively involved in bioconversion process. LEDs fermentation to enhance the production of phenolic content while comparing to normal dark and white light. Among the different color LEDs, blue LEDs mediated fermentation showed higher amount of total phenolic and flavonoid content. Then blue LEDs mediated fermented compound were characterized by FTIR and GC-MS, subsequently the compound was analyzed antioxidant activity tests and the antioxidant activity exhibited higher. This is the first study to demonstrate that B. subtilis-LEDs mediated fermentation is useful for facilitating phenolic compound production and enhancing antioxidant activity, which may have greater application fermentation fields.
The purpose of this study was to determine optimum conditions for the cultivation of Tetraselmis suecica (T. suecica) under illumination of four different types of LEDs (i.e., blue, red, white, and mixed). Initial cell concentration was $4{\times}10^4$ cells/mL and temperature of reactor was maintained between 21-$24^{\circ}C$. Specific growth rates were 0.72 $day^{-1}$(white), 0.58 $day^{-1}$(red), 0.49 $day^{-1}$(mixed), and 0.49 $day^{-1}$(blue). Thus, white LEDs was used for the cultivation of T. suecica. Tests with white LEDs under different light intensity, which was conducted to determine optimum light intensity of white LEDs, showed that 9,000 lux of illumination resulted in fastest cell growth and greatest cell concentrations. To avoid shadow effects by dense cell populations, aeration was performed. Cell concentration increased 3.8 times when aeration was used.

White LEDs, based on blue LED chips coated with a yellow emitting phosphor (YAG:Ce), have several disadvantages. In this paper, we report the improvement in CRI [Color Rendition Index] using $GdAl_5O_{12}:Ce$ (GdAG:Ce) and related phosphors for blue LEDs. A modified combustion synthesis route using mixed fuel was used for synthesis route. By using this procedure, we formed the desired compounds in a single step. LEDs were then fabricated by coating the blue LED chips (CREE 470 nm, 300 micron) with the GdAG:Ce phosphor dispersed in epoxy resin. The CRI typically between 65~70 for the YAG:Ce based LED was improved to 87 for LEDs fabricated from the Gd(Al,Ga)G phosphors.

Research on down conversion phosphor materials is the key for the development of solid state lighting (SSL). Especially finding alternative red phosphor for white LEDs based on blue or NUV LEDs are important research task. Under this view, we have synthesized a series of $Eu^{3+}$ substituted $La_2W_{2-x}Mo_xO_9$ (x = 0 ~ 2, insteps of 0.1) red phosphor and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence. XRD results reveal a phase transition from triclinic to cubic structure for $x\;{\geq}\;0$. All the compositions show broad charge transfer band due to charge transfer from oxygen to tungsten/molybdenum and red emission due to $Eu^{3+}$ ions. Select compositions show high red emission intensity compared to the commercial red phosphor under NUV/blue ray excitation. Hence, this candidate can be possible red emitting phosphors for white LEDs.

Currently, the majority of commercial white LEDs are phosphor converted LEDs made of a blue-emitting chip and YAG yellow phosphor dispersed in organic silicone. However, silicone in high-power devices results in long-term performance problems such as reacting with water, color transition, and shrinkage by heat. Additionally, yellow phosphor is not applicable to warm white LEDs that require a low CCT and high CRI. To solve these problems, mixing of green phosphor, red phosphor and glass, which are stable in high temperatures, is common a production method for high-power warm white LEDs. In this study, we fabricated conversion lenses with LUAG green phosphor, SCASN red phosphor and low-softening point glass for high-power warm white LEDs. Conversion lenses can be well controlled through the phosphor content and heat treatment temperature. Therefore, when the green phosphor content was increased, the CRI and luminance efficiency gradually intensified. Moreover, using high heat treatment temperatures, the fabricated conversion lenses had a high CRI and low luminance efficiency. Thus, the fabricated conversion lenses with green and red phosphor below 90 wt% and 10 wt% with a sintering temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ had the best optical properties. The measured values for the CCT, CRI and luminance efficiency were 3200 K, 80, and 85 lm/w.
Reliability and degradation mechanism of conventional phosphor-converted white GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were investigated. Under electro-thermal stress condition, the optical output degraded rapidly at the initial stress time accompanied by the change of chromatic properties. This could be attributed to the optical degradation of packaged materials, in particular, the browning of encapsulants and the darkening of reflective packages. At longer stress times, the optical output gradually decreased according to the degree of the reverse leakage currents, namely, the generation ofnonradiative recombination defects. This indicates that the optical degradation of white LEDs are dominated by the darkening of packaged materials and the generation of defects depending on the injection current and ambient temperatures. Using analyses of electroluminescence spectra, optical microscopy, electrical, optical, and thermal properties, optical degradations of white LEDs are discussed.
