  • EHD(elastohydrodynamic) lubrication theories are applied to analyse the contact characteristies between the circular are profiled teeth of the plano-wheel gear and the cylindrical pin type teeth of the inner gear for the planocentric gears unit, For improving lubrication characteristic and contact frictional interference between the teeth, a new design method of optimising continuous meshing position is introduced, and the new tooth profile which is modified as a rounded curvature of the edge of circular arc is also suggested. The results of mathematical computation from conventional and the modified gear unit are compared, respectively.

  • Cylindrical lens core for optical transceiver was designed and machined. With the lens design data, WC asymmetric core surface data were generated for non-revolutional ultra-precision grinding. Grinding process for optimum machining conditions of target surface was studied in terms of surface roughness and form profile. We used experimental results to optimize turbine speed, feed-rate and depth of cut with durable grinding wheel wear. Ground WC cores were measured contact type profilers and verified.

  • This research has been performed to reveal the hysteresis phenomena of the hunting motion in a railway passenger cars. It is found that there are some factors and its operation region to make the nonlinear critical speed reacts to them more sensitively than the linear critical speed. The simulation results show that a self steering bogie system can be a substitute proposal to improve curving Performance together with the reduction of hysteresis of critical speed. Full scale roller rig test is carried out for the validation of the numerical results. Finally, it is certified that wear of wheel profile and stiffness discontinuities of wheelset suspension caused by deterioration have to be considered in the analysis to predict the hysteresis of critical speed precisely.

  • An approach to enhance dimensional accuracy of the grinding process has been presented, and grinding of a glass material with a metal-bonded diamond wheel has been studied. In this study, a grinding tool is suspended flexibly and controlled by an electromagnetic actuator. During grinding, profile error of a ground surface is indirectly measured and fed back to a control system. A model of grinding error has been suggested on which the indirect measurement has been based. An optimal PID control is adopted and effectiveness of the in-process feedback control has been verified experimentally.

  • Rail defects(Corrugation, shelling, etc) are occurred by the Rail with wheel contact stress. Rail grinding is maintaining of optimal rail profile to use special rail grinding machine to remove rail defect. The benefits of rail grinding enforcement, improve track safety, improve track steering and rail life, improve ride comfort and reduce noise, etc. Actually when rail grinding plan apply to field track, we should consider a lot of function before determination, such as grinding method, grinding pass number, removing metal volume, etc. because each track has various characteristics. Therefore it is important that the determination of rail grinding strategy for optimum and economic before enforcement.

  • This research has been performed to estimate the hunting motion hysteresis of railway passenger cars. An old and a new car with almost same structure are chosen as analysis models. To solve effectively a set of simultaneous equations of motion strongly coupled with creep relations, shooting algorithm in which the nonlinear relations are regarded as a two-point boundary value problem is adopted. The bifurcation theory is applied to the dynamic analysis to distinguish differences between linear and nonlinear critical speeds by variation of parameters. It is found that there are some factors and their operation area to make nonlinear critical speed respond to them more sensitivity than linear critical speed. Full-scale roller rig tests are carried out for the validation of the numerical results. Finally, it is concluded that the wear of wheel profile and the stiffness discontinuities of wheelset suspension caused by deterioration have to be considered in the analysis to predict hysteresis of critical speed precisely.

  • In MAGLEV system, the train detection can be achieved by using cross inductive radio lines and antennas, because it is impossible to obtain the short circuit between rail and iron-wheel. In this paper, the experimental results of speed profile which is held on MAGLEV at KIMM are presented. We could obtain the successful experimental results for the speed pulses by the inductive radio lines.

  • This study describes the tail vibration reduction for the next generation high speed EMU(HEMU-430X). The model of 6 cars was generated and the calculation was performed using VAMPIRE(railway vehicle dynamic software). In view of ride characteristics, HEMU-430X was expected to sway at the tail because of the yaw damper direction. The lateral acceleration of vehicle body exceeded the criteria because of hunting. To reduce this hunting motion, some methods such as wheel profile change, the change of damping coefficient for the 2nd lateral damper, the damping coefficient change of yaw damper were tested, but had little effect. Finally, the yaw damper direction was changed and the tail vibration disappeared. In real running test, the tail vibration appeared at the speed of 150km/h and the yaw damper direction change made the vehicle stable at the speed of 300km/h. The maximum test speed of HEMU-430X is 430km/h. If the tail vibration appears at higher speed, some other methods in this study may be considered to reduce it.

  • This study was carried out to improve the ride quality of high-speed electric multiple unit. Through dynamic analysis of the HEMU-430X, the range of the equivalent conicity with a critical speed of 300 km/h was between 0.05 and 0.25. The initial adopted wheel profile of HEMU-430X was S1002. The equivalent conicity of S1002 with the mileage of more than 40,000 km was about 0.033 and it was confirmed that XP55 is more suitable for stable operation because XP55 has the equivalent conicity of over 0.061. In order to improve ride quality of high-speed electric multiple unit, the change of installation angle of the yaw damper was suggested from $7.35^{\circ}$ to $0^{\circ}$. From sensitivity analysis and optimization, the air spring lateral and vertical stiffness was suggested to be reduced by 30% and the secondary vertical and lateral damper damping coefficient was increased by 50%. By applying this, it was expected that the car body acceleration could be improved by about 20% on average. The HEMU-430X's yaw damper installation angle was changed to $0^{\circ}$ and the damping coefficient of the lateral damper was increased by 30%. When the test run was carried out at the speed of 300 km/h on the Kyungbu high-speed line, the vehicle lateral acceleration had improved by 34.3%. The effect of additional improvement measures proposed in this paper will be tested in the on track test. The riding quality improvement process used in this study can be used to solve ride quality problems that can occur in commercial operation of high-speed electric multiple unit in the future.

  • This study was carried out to investigate and alleviate the vibration problem of commercial high-speed trains. First, the measurement of the carbody vibration was performed, in order to determine the vibration level of the high-speed train. The measurement result showed that the vibration level of the driver cab was higher than that of the passenger car and that the vibration became bigger toward the trailing end of the train. The vertical vibration of the driver cab and passenger car was larger than the transverse vibration, and the maximum value of the vibration in the ballast section was larger than that in the concrete section. A dynamic analysis was carried out to improve the vibration of the KTX-Sancheon train. The results of the analysis showed that it is necessary to reduce the vibration of the driver cab and both ends of the passenger cars. To reduce the vibration of the driver cab, it was recommended that the stiffness of the secondary coil spring be reduced and the damping coefficient of the secondary vertical damper be increased. It was found that the failure of the suspension system could be the origin of the vibration problem of the high-speed train. The proper management of wheel wear plays an important role in the improvement of the operation efficiency and reduction of the carbody vibration of high-speed trains, and research is underway to change the present wheel profile to increase the mileage between wheel turning.
