Fatigue and wear in wheels is often due to the forces and loading. These certainly have fundamental effects on reducing the wheel life and increasing the costs related to repairing and maintenance. Modeling and stress analysis of a wheel sample existing in the Iranian fleet have been performed in its contact with U33 and UIC60 rails. The results have been reviewed and analyzed in elastic and elastic-plastic phase and under static (railcar weight) and quasi static loads. Moreover, effects of wheel diameter, axle load, wheel material, rail type are analyzed.
After the introduction of revenue service, abnormal wear has been reported on DMRC EMU wheels that have been manufactured and delivered by Rotem. As a part of an investigation of cause, Rotem has carried out the study of propriety between wheel and rail profile. The wheel profile of DMRC EMU is SK-91146. The material and profile of the wheel was presented by DMRC. The Profile of the rail is UIC 60-1:20. This study tested the propriety of three wheel profiles to include, SK-91146, EN 13715-P8 and UIC s1002 between the rail profile UIC 60-1:20.
The hunting is the natural characteristics of the railway wheelset which is originated from the contact between the conical type wheel profile and rail. The critical speed of rolling-stock is called when the hunting is occurred, and it is closely connected with vehicle stability. The parameters which influence the hunting motion are like wheel profile, primary spring property and wheelset dimension, etc. The studies for these parameters are reported diversely. In this study, we aim to analyze the influence of parameters on hunting with the change of wheel profile produced by wheel wear and material property produce by aging of primary spring. For this, we made a dynamic model for wheelset and vehicle. Using these models, we analyzed the critical speed with the variations of the parameters like as wheel profile and primary spring property and we show the results.
The thermo-mechanical interaction between brake block and wheel tread during braking has been found to cause thermal crack on the wheel tread. Due to thermal expansion of the rim material, the thermal cracks will protrude from the wheel tread and be more exposed to wear during the wheel/block contact than the rest of the tread surface. The wheel rim is in residual compression stress when is new. After service running, the region in the tread has reversed to tension. This condition can lead to the formation and growth of thermal cracks in the rim which can ultimately lead to premature failure of wheel. In the present paper, the thermal cracks of railway wheel, one of severe damages on the wheel tread, were evaluated to understand the safety of railway wheel in running condition. The residual stresses for damaged wheel which are applied to tread brake are investigated. Mainly X-ray diffusion method is used. Under the condition of concurrent loading of continuous rolling contact with rails and cyclic frictional heat from brake blocks, the reduction of residual stress is found to correlate well with the thermal crack initiation.
This study examines the inconveniences and problems of established safety-equipment by investigating the actual conditions for elderly people who use welfare services such as wheel chairs provided by care institutions. Suggestions will be made on how to improve the function and convenience of use to suit the needs of the elderly and how to create beautiful wheel chair safety-wear. Medical treatment helpers for the elderly were surveyed about the wearing conditions of wheel chair safety equipment. The present wheel chair safety equipment was shown to be aesthetically unpleasant; in addition, feelings of restriction and unpleasantness were noted (concerning the wearing of the equipment). In addition, there was no feeling of fixed stability. The wheel chair safety-wear that has been designed reflects the inconveniences and problems of current wheel chair safety equipment in material, design, and patterns along with the results of those surveys. Both objective and subjective tests compared the manufactured safety-wear with current equipment. According to the results, the new safety-wear is superior than existing ones.
Diamond is the hardest material known to humans, also possesses the highest thermal conductivity and a very low thermal expansion coefficient. Therefore, these properties of diamond make them logical choices for many difficult grinding application. Bonding material is a very important factor to performance of a grinding wheel. Grinding glass constitutes one of the major application areas of diamond grinding wheels, and Cu-Sn tin bronze matrix is widely used as a metal bond of diamond wheel in grinding glass but these studies are rarely reported. The bronze test pieces excluding diamond are sintered by the method of hot sizing respectively at $600^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, with a composition(Cu-10wt%Sn) on ${\alpha}$ phase and two compositions(Cu-20wt%Sn and Cu-23wt%Sn) on ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase. The rupture strength of Cu-10wt%Sn is highest. The bronze bonded diamond wheels are manufactured by same conditions as the bronze test pieces. The results of grinding ratio of wheels are highest in case of Cu-10wt%Sn bonded wheel sintered at $650^{\circ}C$ and grinding power is highest in same composition sintered at $700^{\circ}C$.
This paper describes the results of a study on the tracking performance of outdoor insulating materials based on the rotating wheel dip test(RWDT). And, the influence of surface degradation was evaluated through such as measurement of the flashover voltage after and before tracking test, also aspects of surface degradation using scanning electron microscopy. The time to tracking breakdown of treated filled specimen is longer than untreated filled specimen. And, after the RWDT, the surface of specimen by adding untreated filler appeared heavy erosion. It was found that the addition to surface treated filler, the better tracking resistance. In the RWDT, the breakdown specimen is not affected by the dry flashover voltage, despite the fact that the surface degradation of tracking test has different state on each specimen. This suggests that wet flashover voltage play an important role in evaluating of tracking and erosion on the surface degradation in tracking test. And, the flashover voltage of specimen under wet conditions are greatly affected by the salt concentration and degree of degradation by the RWDT Because of hydrophobicity and degree of degradation by the RWDT, the flashover voltage of treated filled specimen is higher than that of untreated filled specimen. Different types of specimen may have different hydrophobicity and their surface state under contaminated conditions may not be the same.
In normal grinding abrasive particles of a grinding wheel rotate on planes parallel to the direction of workpiece fred. which may induce continued scratch lines on ground surface as the workpiece feeds. Instead in helical scan grinding the planes make an angle, called a helical angle, with the feeding direction. Thus scratch lines produced by abrasive particles per one revolution are discontinued which implies that the generation of scratch lines are suppressed by the helical scan grinding. In this study some experimental works have been done on the helical scan grinding of glass to find the effects of grinding conditions on the surface roughness and estimate the optimal grinding conditions. The helical angle, fred rate, material removal rate and the wheel speed are taken as factors for three kinds of grinding wheels i.e., coarse(#140 mesh), medium(#400) and fine(#800) diamond wheels. The experiments are scheduled by Taguchi technique and ANOVA has been carried out for the interpretation of the results. As a result of this study effects of the factors are verified quantitatively showing that the major factors are changed according to the wheel's mesh size and the helical angle is one of the influencing factors on the surface quality.
Recently polymer insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Polymer insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain and glass insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage transmission lines. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance and hydrophobicity. Polymer insulators are a relatively new technology, but their expected life is still unknown. Therefore these estimating technique are very important. Their life time is related to weathering and operating condition. Multi-aging test is requested because aging factor is occurred by multi-aging than unique aging. The aging test about polymer insulators have mainly carried out by IEC 61109. This paper presents multi-stress chamber experiments and tracking wheel test to examine the tracking and erosion performance of polymer insulator for transmission. Multi-stress testing is able to demonstrate deficiencies of polymer insulator materials and designs, including the nature of interfaces in insulation design. We have investigated IEC 61109 Annex C (5000h aging test) and CEA tracking wheel test as test methods of artificial accelerated aging. The aging degree of polymer insulator is estimated by leakage current, measurement of hydrophobicity degree, damage conditions of insulator surface, withstand voltage test etc.
Recently, the polishing process using magnetorheological fluids(MR fluids) has been focused as a new ultra-precision polishing technology for micro and optical parts such as aspheric lenses, etc. This method uses MR fluid as a polishing media which contains required micro abrasives. In the MR polishing process, the surface roughness and material removal rate of a workpiece are affected by the process parameters, such as the properties of used nonmagnetic abrasives(particle material, size, aspect ratio and density, etc.), rotating wheel speed, imposed magnetic flux density and feed rate, etc. The objective of this research is to predict MRR according to the polishing conditions based on the multiple regression analysis. Three polishing parameters such as wheel speed, feed rates and current value were optimized. For experimental works, an orthogonal array L27(313) was used based on DOE(Design of Experiments), and ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) was carried out. Finally, it was possible to recognize that the sequence of the factors affecting MRR correspond to feed rate, current and wheel speed, and to determine a combination of optimal polishing conditions.
