The aim of this study is to design a simulation model for an electric All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) tractor to evaluate the performance of the selected component and agricultural work ability. The electric AWD tractor consists of four motors independently for each drive wheel, and each motor is combined with an engine generator, a battery pack, and reducers. The torque data of a 78 kW-class tractor was measured during plow tillage and driving operation to develop a workload cycle. A simulation model was developed by using commercial software, Simulation X, and it used the workload as the simulation condition. As a result of simulation analysis, the drive system, including an electric motor and reducers, was able to cope with high load during plow tillage. The SOC (State of Charge) level was influenced by the output power of the motor, and it was maintained in the range of 50~80%. The fuel consumed by the engine was about 18.23 L during working on a total of 8 fields. The electric AWD tractor was able to perform agricultural work for about 7 hours. In the future study, the electric AWD tractor will be developed reflecting the simulation condition. Research on the comparison between the simulation model and the electric AWD tractor should be performed.

Economic background is discussed with consequences for tractor industry and tractor concepts. Particular reference is given to the question of frame chassis instead of block concept. Development trends of tractor components are analyzed for driving system (including four-wheel drive and brakes), diesel engines, transmissions, human engineering , hydraulics and implement control. Consideration is given to electronics and aspects of environmental protection as well. Expected further tractor design developments are summarized at the end of the paper.
There are several different types of continuously variable transmission(CVT) such as toroidal drive, belt drive, hydrostatic drive, hydro-mechanical drive. The toroidal CVT is an alternative to the manual transmission, HST, power-shift gear trans-missions or other CVTs. The driver of the CVT tractor doesn't have to operate a shia lever since the CVT controller automatically controls the speed of tractor. Thus, it is much easier to operate the CVT tractor. The fuel efficiency of CVT tractor can be increased since the controller responds quickly to the change in external load on the wheel during field operation. This study was conducted to develop the hardwares and softwares for the toroidal CVT controller which control the variator and the range clutches. The hardware consisted of a measurement system, hydraulic system and computer. And the PID controller was developed using the simulation model of the CVT control system. Through the simulation, the control coefficients for the PID controller were selected. Finally, the performance of the CVT control system was evaluated by step response test and torque response test. The settling time of the CVT control system appeared to be fast enough for field operations.

This study was performed to develop a measurement system of tractor field performance for plow and rotary operations. Measurement system for tractor consisted of torque sensors to measure torque of drive axles and PTO axle, speed sensors to measure rotational speed of drive axles and engine, microcomputer to control data logger, and data logger as I/O interface system. The measurement system was installed on four-wheel-drive tractor. Four-element full-bridge type strain gages were used for torque measurement of drive axles and optical encoders were used to measure speeds of drive axles and engine. Slip rings were mounted on the rotational axles. Signals from sensors were inputted to data logger that was controlled by microcomputer with parallel communication. Sensors were calibrated before the field tests. Regression equations were found on completion of the calibrations. The field experiment was performed at paddy fields and uplands. Rotary and plow were used when the tractor was operated in the field. Travelling speeds of the tractor were 1.9 km/h, 2.7 km/h, 3.7 km/h, 5.5 km/h, 8.2 km/h, and 11.8 km/h. Operating depths of implements were maintained approximately 20cm during the tests. Torque data of drive axles were different at each location during plow and rotary operations. Results showed that torque of rear axles were greater than those of front axles. Total torque were 6860 - 11064 Nm at the upland and 7360 - 14190 Nm at the paddy field for plow operations. It was found that torque at the paddy field were about 20% greater than those at the upland for plow operations. Torque data showed that rotary operations required less power than plow operation at the paddy field and the upland. Torque measurements at each axle for rotary operations were only 8 - 16% of plow operations in the upland and 15 - 20% in the paddy field.

The purpose of this study was to design a powertrain for a 78 kW AWD (all wheel drive) electric tractor by analyzing the combination of various reduction gear ratios on a commercial motor using data from actual agricultural work and driving conditions. A load measurement system was constructed to collect data using wheel torque meters, proximity sensors, and a data acquisition system. Field experiments for measuring load data were performed for two environmental driving conditions (on asphalt and soil) and four agricultural operations (plow tillage, rotary tillage, loader operation, and baler operation). The attached implements and gear stages were selected through farmer surveys. The range of the reduction ratio was determined by selecting the minimum reduction ratio needed to satisfy the torque condition required for agricultural operations and the maximum reduction gear ratio to satisfy the maximum travel speed. The minimum reduction gear ratio selected was 57 in consideration of the working load condition and the maximum reduction gear ratio selected was 62 considering the maximum running speed. In the range of the reduction gear ratio 57 - 62, the selected motor satisfied all working torque conditions. As a result, the combination of the selected motor and reduction gear ratio was applicable for satisfying the loads required during agricultural operation and driving operation.

Agricultural tractors drive and operate both off-road and on-road. Tire-road interaction significantly affects the tractive performance of a tractor, which is difficult to predict numerically. Many empirical models have been developed to predict the tractive performance of tractors using the cone index, which can be measured through simple tests. However, a magic formula model that can determine the tractive performance without a cone index can be used instead of traditional empirical models as the cone index cannot be measured on asphalt roads. The aim of this study was to predict the tractive performance of a tractor using the magic formula tire model. The traction force of the tires on an asphalt road was measured using an agricultural tractor. The dynamic wheel load was calculated to derive the coefficients of the traction-slip curve using the measured static wheel load and drawbar pull of the tractor. Curve fitting was performed to fit the experimental data using the magic formula. The parameters of the magic formula tire model were well identified, and the model successfully determined the coefficient of traction of the tractor.

A microcomputer -based data acquistion system was designed and developed at Michigan State University , USA to conduct field data studies. The system designed for the research carried out used an Apple IIe microcomputer for collecting data on-board the tractor. An AII3 Analog to Digital (A/D_ convertor was chosen to interface each analog signal to the microcomputer. A commercially available Dj TPM II was employed to display information such as an engine speed, ground speed, percent drive wheel slip , distance travelled and area covered per hour. The frequency output from the radar unit was channeled through a frequency to voltage (F/V) convertor , so that AII3 Analog to Digital (A/D) convertor could read it. The fuel consumption was measured using on EMCO pdp-1 fuel flow meter attached to the engine fuel line. The draft of the tillage and other drag equipment was determined using strain gages attached to the drawbar of the tractor. The system was developed to collect the draft and fuel requirements for various farm equipment different kind of soils.
In this paper, a mechanical analysis model for steep-slope log-skidding operations of a rubber-tired tractor is discussed and the applicability of the model is investigated. The model largely consists of mathematical analysis models for log drag, dynamic vehicle weight distributions and soil-vehicle traction. For the case study, a theoretical data set for log skidding operations is used in investigating the effect of the factors influencing the results of mechanical analysis or the productivity of skidding operations. The analyses include 1) the effect of log choking methods on tangential log-skidding force, 2) the effects of the change in travel speed and log load on the required input power to the wheels and 3) the log skidding performance of a two-wheel drive compared with that of a four-wheel drive.
Steep and narrow ramp installed in the paddy field makes it difficult and sometimes dangerous to drive agricultural machines on it. Because agricultural machinery become larger and heavier, it is necessary to revise design standard for ramp to provide safe travel. This study was conducted to revise the design standard fur paddy field ramp, especially for its width and slope. A mathematical model predicting travelling path of a tractor on paddy field ramp and farm road was developed and simulated. To verify this model, field tests were carried out. The model could predict trvelling path with RMS Error of 12.5cm and 8.2cm, which were judged to be adoptable fur determining the width of paddy field ramp. By applying this model to 110ps tractor, which was assumed to be the largest tractor in Korea, width of paddy field ramp was determined as over 3.6m. The slope of paddy field ramp, which provided tractor with 10% of the total weight of the tractor and the mounted implement as reaction force at front wheel against ground was analyzed by considering weight transfer effect on a ramp. The result showed that adequate slope of paddy field ramp was 14°.
