Tan spot, caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, is a major foliar disease in wheat worldwide. In April 2021, tan spot symptoms were observed in a commercial wheat field in Suncheon, Jeonnam Province, Korea, with over 5% of the wheat leaves exhibiting symptoms. These symptoms included oval-shaped tan necrosis surrounded by a bright halo. The three representative isolates exhibited irregular mycelial growth on V8-potato dextrose agar and produced pseudothecia. Based on the concatenated sequence datasets of four multi-genes, including the internal transcribed spacer, large subunit ribosomal RNA, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and RNA polymerase II second-largest subunit genes, phylogenetic analysis revealed that these three isolates clustered in the same clade as P. tritici-repentis. Results of pathogenicity test indicated that the initial symptoms appeared 5 days post-inoculation (dpi), with typical tan spot symptoms developing at 7 dpi. The pathogen was successfully re-isolated from the symptomatic tissues, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates. Furthermore, we selected three fungicides that effectively inhibited the mycelial growth of P. tritici-repentis by more than 90% in vitro. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of tan spot disease in wheat in Korea.
The effects of reducing pork fat levels from 20% to 15% or 10% by partially substituting pork back fat with wheat sprout fiber in reduced-fat chicken patties were investigated. Approximate composition, energy value, pH, color, cooking loss, reduction in diameter, reduction in thickness, shear force, and sensory properties were determined. Moisture content, ash contents, yellowness of uncooked and cooked reduced-fat chicken patties with wheat sprout were higher than those in the control, while displaying fat content, calorie content, and pH of uncooked and cooked lower in reduced-fat chicken patties than in the control. Cooking loss, reduction in diameter, and reduction in thickness were the highest in the reduced-fat chicken patties with 10% fat level. Cooking loss, reduction in diameter, and reduction in thickness were decreased when fat levels and wheat sprout levels were increased. Control samples without wheat sprout dietary fiber had significantly (p<0.05) higher color and flavor scores compared to reduced-fat chicken patties containing wheat sprout dietary fiber. The overall acceptability of the control and treatment with 15% fat and 2% wheat sprout dietary fiber (T3) was the highest. Therefore, 15% fat level in reduced-fat chicken patties with the addition of 2% wheat sprout dietary fiber can be used to improve the quality and sensory characteristics of regular-fat chicken patties containing 20% fat level.
To investigate kernel hardness, a compression test which is widely used to measure the hardness of individual kernels as a physical testing method was made simultaneously with the measurement of friabilin (15KDa) which is strongly associated with kernel hardness and was recently developed as a biochemical marker for evaluating kernel hardness in 79 Korean wheat varieties and experimental lines. With the scattered diagram based on the principal component analysis from the parameters of the compression test, 79 Korean wheat varieties were classified into three groups based on the principal component analysis. Since conventional methods required large amount of flour samples for analysis of friabilin due to the relatively small amount of friabilin in wheat kernels, those methods had limitations for quality prediction in wheat breeding programs. An extraction of friabilin from the starch of a single kernel through cesium chloride gradient centrifugation was successful in this experiment. Among 79 Korean wheat varieties and experimental lines 50 lines (63.3%) exhibited a friabilin band and 29 lines (36.7%) did not show a friabilin band. In this study, lines that contained high maximum force and the lower ratio of minimum force to maximum force showed the absence of the friabilin band. Identification of friabilin, which is the product of a major gene, could be applied in the screening procedures of kernel hardness. The single kernel analysis system for friabilin was found to be an easy, simple and effective screening method for early generation materials in a wheat breeding program for quality improvement.
In this Experiment three wether male Matou goats (♂), all fitted with permanent rumen fistulae, were used to study the rumen degradabilities (incubation time 48h) of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), acid detergent ligin (ADL), cellulose (CEL) and hemicellulose (HC) and their contents of wheat and rice straws were determined for the different morphological fractions and segments. The results showed that the variation of different fractions for wheat and rice straw is the true resources of their nutritive value variation and the cell wall contents of wheat and rice straw are also obviously different. The rumen degradabilities of different straw fibre are significantly different (p<0.01), mean while the effect of straw variety is also significant (p<0.05). The aim was to set up a foundation for studying the rumen degradation of the roughage resources.

Stomatal traits such as stomata density (SD), aperture length (APL) and width (APW), guard cell length (GCL) and width (GCW), and distance between stomata (DIS) were investigated to identify correlation with agronomic traits for 35 Korean wheat cultivars. Flag leaf width (FLW) of Korean wheat cultivars was the widest in Ol-mil, and the narrowest in Keumkang. SD tended to be higher on the adaxial side than on the abaxial side in Korean wheat cultivars. SD of adaxial and abaxial sides was classified into a cultivar with a significantly different or not. In APL, 18 wheat cultivars showed significant differences according to leaf side, and APL of adaxial was longer than APL of abaxial in 13 wheat cultivars. In APW, 15 wheat cultivars showed a significant difference, and APW of abaxial was wider than APW of adaxial among them. In GCL, 14 wheat cultivars showed a significant difference, and the GCL of abaxial was longer than the GCL of adaxial in 10 wheat cultivars. In GCW, 10 wheat cultivars showed a significant difference, GCW of adaxial was wider than GCW of abaxial and in 6 wheat cultivars. FLW of adaxial and abaxial showed a negative correlation with GCL and a positive correlation with grain number per panicle. FLW of only abaxial showed a positive correlation with DIS. The SD of the adaxial showed a negative correlation with GCL, while the SD of the abaxial showed a negative correlation with APL. APL of both sides of the leaf showed a positive correlation with GCL, and APW of only abaxial showed a negative correlation with GLC. DIS of adaxial showed a negative correlation with tiller number (TN), while DIS of abaxial showed a positive correlation with GNP.

Abiotic stress is a major problem in global agriculture as it negatively affects crop growth, yield, and quality. Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is the world's second-highest-producing food resource, so the importance of mitigating damage caused by abiotic stress has been emerging. In this study, we performed GWAS to search for SNPs associated with salt tolerance and drought tolerance. NaCl (200 mM) treatment was performed at the seedling stage using 613 wheat varieties in Korean wheat core collection. Root length, root surface area, root average diameter, and root volume were measured. Drought stress was applied at the seedling stage, and the above phenotypes were measured. GW AS was performed for each phenotype data using the MLM, MLMM, and FarmCPU models. The best salt-tolerant wheat varieties were 'MK2402', 'Gyeongnam Geochang-1985-3698', and 'Milyang 13', showing superior root growth. The significant SNP AX-94704125 (BA00756838) were identified in all models. The genes closely located to the significant SNP were searched within ± 250 kb of the corresponding SNP. A total of 11 genes were identified within the region. NB-ARC involved in the defense response, FKSI involved in cell wall biosynthesis, and putative BP Ml involved in abiotic stress responses were discovered in the 11 genes. The best drought-tolerant wheat varieties were 'PI 534284', 'Moro of Sind', and 'CM92354-33M-0Y-0M-6Y-0B-0BGD', showing superior root growth. This study discovered SNPs associated with salt tolerance in Korean wheat core collection through GWAS. GWAS of drought tolerance is now proceeding, and the GWAS results will be represented on a poster. The SNPs identified by GWAS can be useful for studying molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance and drought tolerance in wheat.

Wheat is one of the world's most important crop species. Recently, abnormal climate changes directly influence on the significant reduction of wheat productivity in the world. This threaten allow breeders to find new genetic resources. Wheat is one of the widely grown crops in the world. Individual cultivars / germplasm is adapted in that region where the climate is unique to each other. Therefore, introducing new genetic resources which was good in one place may better perform in another region. In this study, we evaluated germplasm in Korean environment and measured numerous agro-morphological characteristics. Information that are provided by the National Agrobiodiversity Center (Jeonju, Korea) and National Plant Germplasm System (Aberdeen, USA) were included in the analysis. Cluster analysis was performed using the unweight pair-group method of averages. The results of PCA indicated principal discriminatory characteristics of wheat landraces and varieties. Significant differences indicated high variability among the quantitative traits. Cluster analysis results showed that the groups were divided by geological climate condition. The preliminary evaluation of germplasms in Korean environment would help to develop wheat cultivars via providing useful genetic traits that are resided in alien germplasms.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of various mixtures of the chicken skin and wheat fiber on the properties of chicken nuggets. Two skin and fiber mixtures (SFM) were prepared using the following formulations; SFM-1: chicken skin (50%), wheat fiber (20%), and ice (30%); and SFM-2: chicken skin (30%), wheat fiber (20%), and ice (50%). Chicken nugget samples were prepared by adding the following amounts of either SFM-1 or SFM-2: 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%. The water content for samples formulated with SFM-1 or SFM-2 was higher than in the control (p<0.05), and increased with increasing the concentrations of SFM-1 and SFM-2. The addition of SFM-1 and SFM-2 had no significant effect on the pH of the samples. The lightness value of uncooked chicken nuggets was higher than that of cooked chicken nuggets for all the samples tested. Chicken nuggets formulated with SFM-1 and SFM-2 displayed higher cooking yields than the control sample. The hardness of the control sample was also lower than the samples containing SFM-1 and SFM-2. The sensory evaluation showed no significant differences between the control and the samples containing SFM. Therefore, the incorporation of a chicken skin and wheat fiber mixture improved the quality of chicken nuggets.

This study was conducted to evaluate the extruding effects of corn and wheat on growth performance and fecal digestibility of amino acids in early-weaned pigs. Ground corn and wheat by a hammer mill (3 mm screen in diameter) were extruded at $130{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with a moist-type extruder ($Matador^{(R)}$). Treatments were: 1) 3 mm ground corn, 2) extruded corn, 3) 3 mm ground wheat, and 4) extruded wheat. A total of 160 pigs (14 d of age and $4.3{\pm}0.74kg$ BW) were allotted with the dietary treatments for a 21-d feeding trial. All diets were mash and contained 30% corn or wheat products. For a digestibility trial, 16 pigs (14-d old and $4.2{\pm}0.32kg$ BW) were employed in individual metabolic crates. There were no differences (p>0.15) in growth performance between corn-fed and wheat-fed groups. Feeding pigs diets containing extruded corn or wheat did not affect ADG (p>0.15) and ADFI (p>0.15), but it improved feed/gain (p<0.01). Also, feeding pigs diets containing extruded corn or wheat had lower true fecal digestibilities of arginine, histidine, isoleucine, lysine and valine (p<.007) in the pigs. In conclusion, our results suggest that extruding corn and wheat had no benefit on the growth of early-weaned pigs.
