  • It is well known that the porosity and adsorption capacity in a carbon depends on the nature of precursor, pyrolysis and activation conditions and the ash content. The studies on carbon prepared from the dry and wet babbool wood were under taken to ascertain the effect of initial state of precursor on the development of porosity in the resulting activated carbon. The characterization and adsorption studies carried out shows the presence of mainly mesoporosity in the carbon prepared from dry wood while more of microporosity was observed in the activated carbon prepared from wet wood. The results on porosity in both the cases have been compared and correlated with their processing conditions.

  • All measures to cope with flooding rely on flood predictions to some extent, and the effectiveness of these measures is dependent on the quality of flood predictions. It is important to track properly the movements of the river-bankline in numerical modeling because the location of it varies continuously in the flood inundation. In this study, the wet and dry treatment is used to describe the moving river-bankline accurately (Cho, 1996). An oscillatory flow motion in a parabolic basin is used to validate the performance of the developed model based on quadtree grids. As a result of a simulation, a reasonable agreement is observed with analytical and Cho's results.

  • The wetting dynamics of water droplets dispensed on the surface of dry and wet hydrophilic membranes were investigated experimentally from a microscale point of view. By using a high-speed, white-beam x-ray microimaging (WXMI) synchrotron, consecutive images displaying the dynamic motions of the droplets were acquired. Through analyzing the characteristics observed, it was found that the dry hydrophilic membrane showed local hydrophobicity at a certain point during the absorption process with apparent contact angles greater than 90. While on the other hand, the apparent contact angles of a water droplet absorbing into the wet membrane remained less than 90 and showed total hydrophilicity. The observations and interpretation of characteristics that affect the contact, wetting, recoiling, and dynamic behaviors of droplets are significant for controlling liquid droplet impingement in a desired manner.

  • The wet ash method has been used as an official standard procedure for the analysis of Cd in brown rice in Korea, but this method involves several disadvantages. Thus, four analytical methods were compared in this experiment in order to find a more efficient method for the Cd analysis in brown rice. Evaluation was made based on both the Cd recovery percentages from the Cd-spiked samples and the relationships between Cd contents obtained by the official procedure and other methods. Results showed that ashing 50g brown rice at $600^{\circ}C$(dry ash method) recovered nearly 80% of the spiked Cd. This recovery percentage was a little lower than that of the wet ash method(87%) but higher than those of other methods. The dry ash method had the lowest standard deviations and revealed the highest correlation coefficient($r=0.98^{\ast\ast}$) in Cd contents with the standard wet ash method. These results demonstrated that the dry ash method, ashing 50g brown rice at $600^{\circ}C$, would be as efficient as the wet ash method and could be employed as a recommended procedure for the Cd analysis of brown rice.

  • This paper investigated garment formability and fabric mechanical properties of one-way and two-way stretch fabrics according to the thermal treatment methods. One-way and two-way stretch fabrics were woven using 75d and 150d PET/spandex covering yarns and then these were wet thermal treated with four kinds of finishing machines. The fabric mechanical properties of these stretch fabrics specimens were measured and compared with the regular PET fabrics. The stretch ratio of one-way stretch fabric was ranged 12 to 26 percentage, 15 to 45 percentage for 2-way stretch fabrics and 4 to 10 percentage for regular fabrics. Garment formability of stretch fabric was superior than that of regular fabrics, in addition, 2-way stretch fabric was better than one-way. The garment formability of the stretch fabrics treated with CPB and Lava wet thermal machines showed the highest values, and the stretch ratio of these 2-way stretch fabrics was also the highest, which was ranged 20 to 45 percentage. This phenomenon was assumed to be due to high extensibility and bending rigidity with low shear modulus of the 2-way stretch fabric treated with CPB and Lava wet thermal machines. It was shown that the garment formability of stretch fabrics treated without dry thermal treatment was higher than that of dry thermal treated fabrics. It revealed that high stretch fabric was available under the condition of low process tension in the wet and dry thermal treatments of the finishing process, which makes high garment formability.

  • This paper develops and evaluates a mechanical machining process which involves drilling on PVS material. According to the material, two treatment experiments were conducted, one involving drilling in a wet condition or using a lubricant and one involving drilling in a dry condition with no lubricant. Drilling in a dry condition showed better performance in terms of the cutting time than in the wet condition. Otherwise, the wet condition has several advantages. The lubricant influenced the burr diameter size and minimized the temperature on the surface of the work piece. During the wet condition drilling process, a smaller burr diameter size was noted as compared to the dry condition. The temperature showed a linear correlation with the drill bit size, where a least-square analysis provided an $R^2$valuewhichexceeded 0.95. The wet condition required more cutting time than the dry condition. In this condition, the water provides a lubrication effect. A thin layer between the cutting edges and the surface of the work piece is formed. The chip formation is affected by the drilling depth. The color on the tips of the chips was darker than in the initial condition. No correlation between the drilling depth and the bore roughness was noted, but the variation of the cutting speed or the RPM influenced the roughness of the bore. The optimum cutting speed ranged from 40 RPM to 45 RPM in the condition which provided the finest roughness surface.

  • Objectives: To examine the efficacy and safety of cupping therapy for insomnia disorder and provide clinical evidence that could contribute to further research. Methods: We searched randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that verified effects of cupping therapy for insomnia disorder from 11 domestic and foreign databases. Included studies were evaluated using Risk of Bias (RoB). Results: Nineteen RCTs were selected. Wet cupping was more frequently used than dry cupping. Moving cupping was mostly used among dry cupping methods. Dry cupping was mainly performed in Bladder Meridian on the back. Wet cupping was mainly performed on BL18, LR14, and BL15. The most common treatment period was 4 weeks. The average number of treatments per week was about 2.4 times for all types of cupping, about 3.2 times for dry cupping and about 1.9 times for wet cupping. All selected studies showed a significant sleep improvement compared to the control group. As a result of the meta-analysis, in terms of effective rate, SAS score, and SDS score, the wet cupping in combination with acupuncture was significantly more effective than acupuncture alone, although the quality of selected RCTs was low. Conclusions: Cupping therapy is effective for insomnia disorder. Based on results of this study, it is reasonable to use wet cupping two times per week on BL18, LR14, and BL15 or use moving cupping three times per week in Bladder Meridian on the back for 4 weeks to treat insomnia disorder.

  • Three experiments were carried out to evaluate the fermentation process and subsequent nutritional quality of silage made from dried and fresh barley straw with and without the addition of wet brewers' grains. The treatments were: 1 kg of dried straw with 600 g of water but no wet brewers' grains (I - 0) as a control, and the same straw mixed with 2 kg (I - 2), 3 kg (I - 3), 4 kg (I - 4), or 5 kg (I - 5) of wet brewers' grains as treatments in Experiment I; and 2 kg of fresh straw without wet brewers' grains (II - 0) as a control, and the same fresh straw mixed with 2 kg (II - 1), 4 kg (II - 2), 6 kg (II - 3), or 8 kg (II - 4) of wet brewers' grains as treatments in Experiment II. Each material prepared was ensiled in 5 L (vinyl) bag silos, and the silos placed in a chamber of $21^{\circ}C$ for 10 (Exp. I) or 7 (Exp. II) months. The fermentation quality and nutritive value of the barley straw silages produced were markedly improved by mixing them with wet brewers' grains. Increasing levels of wet brewers' grains caused on increase in fermentation quality. The in vitro dry matter digestibility of silages was also increased by adding wet brewers' grains. Two semi scale pilot silages, experiment III, prepared from dried and fresh barley straw mixed with wet brewers' grains were fed to wether sheep. These silages, which contained 50% barley straw and 50% wet brewers' grains by dry weight, were moderate apparent digestibility and supplied of about 50% TDN and DCP.

  • A prototype of the desiccant cooling system with a regenerative evaporative cooler was built and tested for the performance evaluation. The regenerative evaporative cooler is to cool a stream of air using evaporative cooling effect without an inc6rease in the humidity ratio. It is comprised of multiple pairs of dry and wet channels and the evaporation water is supplied only to the wet channels. By redirecting a portion of the air flown out of the dry channel into the wet channel, the air can be cooled down to a temperature lower than its inlet wet-bulb temperature at the outlet end of the dry channels. Incorporating a regenerative evaporative cooler eliminates the need for deep dehumidification in the desiccant rotor that is necessary to achieve low air temperature in the system with a direct evaporative cooler. Subsequently, the regenerative evaporative cooler enables the use of low temperature heat source to regenerate the dehumidifier permitting the desiccant cooling system more beneficial compared with other thermal driven air conditioners. At the ARI condition with the regeneration temperature of $60^{\circ}C$, the prototype showed the cooling capacity of 4.4 kW and COP of 0.75.
