  • Results are shown on the preparation and characterization of homopolymer of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl isocyanate(MOI) ad copolymers of MOI with styrene synthesized by radical polymerization. The significant effectiveness of the polymers as additives for paper dry and wet strength was found. Dry strength can be increased by 75% and wet strength retention of sheets can reach 30% based on the increased dry strength and about 50% based on the dry strength of untreated sheet. Based on isocyanate group consumption, copolymers containing less isocyanate can give better effect than homopolymer in sheet wet strength improvement. Furthermore, the base paper containing a small amount of polyallylamine hydrochloride was used for polymer treatment and got higher wet strength improvement.

  • The increase of wet web solid content after wet press and dry compressive strength were observed in lab study by judicious application of wood flour and starch for the old corrugated container (OCC). Pearl starch was better than cationic starch in strength development, but cationic starch was better for drainage. Application of vacuum on the mixed solution of wood flour and starch helped strength development further without loss of other properties. The effect of wood flour addition on wet web solid content improved as the wet pressing pressure increased. The use of wood flour and starch mixture improved wet web solid contents further.

  • The purpose of this study was to confirm paper strengthening properties with recently commercialized polyvinylamine. Because of its high cationic charge density, polyvinylamine has been investigated as a size retention and surface coating aids. In this study, we tried to confirm polyvinylamine as wet-end additives to improve dry and wet strength using LBKP and BCTMP pulps. As a result, we found improvement of dry and wet tensile properties of polyvinylamine with BCTMP were much better than LBKP condition. This phenomena could be explained that ionic bonding of cationic charge of polyvinylamine with abundant anionic substances of BCTMP was a very important factor to improve dry and wet strength of paper.

  • In this study, the physical properties of base paper for the manufacture of mulching mat for afforestation seedling were investigated. The base paper for mulching mat was prepared by stock conditions of PAE and AKD addition into the screened slurry of KOCC for the strengthening effects of wet tensile and burst strength. The optimum additions of PAE and AKD were considered at 2% and 0.5%, respectively. The accelerated aging by ISO 5630-1 and wet heat aging method under hot water for 2 kinds of commercial mulching and wet strength paper were compared with the base paper prepared for mulching mat manufacture. The accelerated aging test for the base paper prepared for mulching mat manufacture resulted in the same tendency of physical properties as two kinds of commercial products. However, the results of wet heat aging test under hot water indicated that the physical strength for base paper prepared was much higher than others. In addition, the opacity behavior for base paper prepared was enough effects to obstruct weeds growth by isolating transmission of sunlight.

  • This paper investigates the utilization of waste tyre crumb rubber as the fine aggregate in precast concrete Paving block (PCPB). PCPB's are generally preferred for city roads, pedestrian crosswalk, parking lots and bus terminals. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties of wet cast PCPB containing waste tyre crumb rubber. The mechanical properties were investigated using a density, compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength tests at 7, 28 56 days according to the IS 15688:2006 and EN1338. The wet cast method was followed for producing PCPB samples. The fine aggregate (river sand) was replaced with waste tyre crumb in percentage of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by volume. All the test results were compared with the conventional PCPB (Without rubber). The test results indicate its feasibility for incorporating waste tyre crumb rubber in the production of PCPB by the wet cast method.

  • To increase paper strength, refining and wet pressing are performed. Many researches were carried out to identify the origin of paper strength. Since fracture toughness was governed by stress concentration, fracture toughness reflects microscopic paper strength. The aim of this paper is to analyze how paper strength was affected by changes of refining and wet-pressing. Fiber properties and structural, tensile and fracture properties of handsheets were evaluated. Especially, fracture toughness was evaluated by J-integral. As the refining proceeds, stock properties maybe divided into two stages such as fibers activation and fines activation according to freeness. In fibers activation stages, about 750-450 mL CSF, the fracture toughness increased with refining and wet pressing but in fines activation stages, about 450-250 mL CSF, the fracture toughness increased only with wet pressing. It is clear that fracture toughness was affected not only by fibers properties but also by fines properties in fines activation stages.

  • Frequently spraying of natural starch slurry onto the formed wet web has been adopted to improve properties of paperboards. This conventional starch spraying technique, however, becomes less effective in strength improvement. In this study the effects of various factors including wet web dryness, quantity of starch slurry sprayed, and drying temperature on paperboard properties were investigated. Migration of starch granules into the webs appeared to cause a reduction in plybond strength when the web dryness was lower than this level. Wet webs should contain enough water to swell the starch granules, and at the same time they should be heated to a temperature high enough for complete cooking of the sprayed starches to occur. This suggested that preheating of the wet web can be employed to improve the plybond strength.

  • In recent years, it had focused on the improvement of paper properties by addition of NFC (Nano-fibrillated Cellulose). Although the addition of NFC to wet-end of papermaking process could be suggested as a new solution to improve the strength properties of paper, it was not possible to avoid the bad drainage caused by the added NFC's chocking pores of wet web. Instead of the direct addition to wet-end, spraying of NFC to web in wire-section was tried in this study and evaluated by checking various paper properties including surface smoothness, tensile strength, folding endurance and stiffness. According to the increase of spraying amount of NFC, above mentioned paper properties were enhanced without excessive deterioration of drainage. Compared with direct introduction to wet-end, spraying could be regarded as a more proper method to enhance the surface smoothness and strength properties of paper.

  • This study was conducted to determine the properties of seedling plate papers currently used in commercial production, then to get basic information for manufacturing new seedling plate paper. Imported seedling plate paper had high wet tensile and burst strengths in its usage circumstances. Wet tensile strength was very high with 38.7% of dry tensile strength. Wet burst strength was also very high with 62.4% of dry burst strength. The seedling plate paper contained about 30% of synthetic fibers. It had 10 Gurley sec. in air permeability indicating effective movement of air. Seedling plate papers were' made in laboratory scale. For sufficient sizing degree, the addition of 0.5% AKD (alkylketene dimer) by weight was good enough. Additional amount of AKD more than 0.5% by weight caused strength loss even though improving sizing effect. The addition of wet strength reagent such as Finex-B 2% by weight resulted in good strength and air permeability.

  • For the purpose of manufacturing water-resistant corrugated board boxes for agricultural products in the cold chain system, the effects of fiber types, wet strength agents and a moisture-proof chemical on the properties of the base papers were investigated first. PAE(polyamide amine epichlorohydrin) showed better performance than MF(melamine formalde-hyde) over broad stock pH ranges, which was prefered as wet strength agent for the paper grade. When short fibers(AOCC, KOCC) were mixed with long fiber(UKP) in certain ratios, some physical properties of the paper made with mixed fibers were similar to those of the paper made with UKP only. Paper containing AOCC showed the biggest increase in water resistance when PAE was added to the stock. Synergistic effects in moisture-proof and some mechanical properties of paper were appeared when PAR was added internally, together with the coating of a moisture proof chemical on the sheets.
