  • In this paper, the thermal oxidation behaviors and the electrical characteristics of the thermal oxide grown on SiC are discussed. For these studies the oxide layers with various thickness were on SiC in wet $O_2$ or dry $O_2$ at l15$0^{\circ}C$ and the MOS capacitors using the 350$\AA$ gate oxide grown in wet $O_2$ were fabricated and electrically characterized. It was found from the experimental results that the oxidation rate of SiC with the Si-face and with the carbon-face were about 10% and 50% of oxidation rate of Si. The C-V measurement results of the SiC oxide showed abnormal hysterisis properties which had ever been not observed for the Si oxide. And the hysterisis behavior was seen more significant when initial bias voltage was more negative or more positive. The hysterisis property of the SiC oxide was believed to be due the substantial amount of the deep level traps to exist at the interface between the oxide and the SiC substrate. The leakage of the SiC oxide was found to be one order larger than the Si oxide, but the breakdown strength was almost equal to that of the Si oxide.

  • Soybean-based adhesives have recently been reconsidered as alternatives to petroleum-based adhesives due to the uncertainty of availability of petrochemical products and the increased demand for wood adhesives. This study was conducted to investigate the adhesive properties of alkaline phenolic soy (APS) resin for hybrid poplar flakeboard. The APS resin was formulated by crosslinking an alkaline soy flour hydrolyzate with lab-prepared PF resin in the soy hydrolyzate to PF resin weight ratios of 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50. The APS resins were used to fabricate homogeneous hybrid poplar flakeboards with different resin solid levels (5%, 7%, and 9%), press temperatures (175 and $200^{\circ}C$), and press times of 8 and 10 minutes. The IB, wet MOR, and dimensional stability properties of board improved with increasing press time, press temperature, and PF level in APS resins. Increasing press time can be used to offset poor IB strength associated with a 9% resin solid level and the excessive moisture content in the mat. The following conditions were concluded to meet the requirements of the CSA standard for exterior-grade flakeboard: a 50% PF level, a 5% resin content, a $200^{\circ}C$ press temperature, and an 8 minute press time.

  • In high rise buildings that utilize precast large panel system for construction, the shear wall provides strength and stiffness during earthquakes. The performance of a wall panel system depends mainly on the type of connection used to transfer the forces from one wall element to another wall element. This paper presents an experimental investigation on different types of construction detailing of the precast wall to wall vertical connections under reverse cyclic loading. One of the commonly used connections in India to connect wall to wall panel is the loop bar connection. Hence for this study, three types of wet connections and one type of dry connection namely: Staggered loop bar connection, Equally spaced loop bar connection, U-Hook connection, and Channel connection respectively were used to connect the precast walls. One third scale model of the wall was used for this study. The main objective of the experimental work is to evaluate the performance of the wall to wall connections in terms of hysteretic behaviour, ultimate load carrying capacity, energy dissipation capacity, stiffness degradation, ductility, viscous damping ratio, and crack pattern. All the connections exhibited similar load carrying capacity. The U-Hook connection exhibited higher ductility and energy dissipation when compared to the other three connections.

  • The electrical properties and surface morphology changes of a silicon wafer as a function of the HF concentration as the wafer is etched were studied. The HF concentrations were 28, 30, 32, 34, and 36 wt%. The surface morphology changes of the silicon wafer were measured by an SEM ($80^{\circ}$ tilted at ${\times}200$) and the resistivity was measured by assessing the surface resistance using a four-point probe method. The etching rate increased as the HF concentration increased. The maximum etching rate 27.31 ${\mu}m/min$ was achieved at an HF concentration of 36 wt%. A concave wave formed on the wafer after the wet etching process. The size of the wave was largest and the resistivity reached 7.54 $ohm{\cdot}cm$ at an 30 wt% of HF concentration. At an HF concentration of 30 wt%, therefore, a silicon wafer should have good joining strength with a metal backing as well as good electrical properties.

  • The graft copolymer of chitosan with amino acid, L-lysine was synthesized by heterogeneous copolymerization and was evaluated as an artificial skin. The mechanical properties under dry and wet state, water content, water vapor transmittance rate and biodegradability were measured. The tensile strength and elongation under wet state ranged $0.3-0.5\;kg/mm^2$, 10-13%, respectively. Water vapor transmittance rate ranged $450-500\;g/m^2{\cdot}day$ like that of the normal skin. The weight loss of prepared membrane by protease IV was measured for the degree of biodegradation. The degree of biodegradation was around 15% and after 4 days it was slow. Biocompatibility was evaluated by studying the attachment of human fibroblast on the prepared membrane surface.

  • Alternative way of shaping fibers suitable for papermaking was introduced. Impact refining, which was done simply by hitting wet fibers with a metal weight vertically, was intended to keep the fibers from shortening and to cause mostly internal fibrillation. Virgin chemical pulp, its recycled one and OCC were used in the experiment. It was noticed from the experiment that impact refining on virgin chemical pulp kept the fiber length and increased bonding properties greatly. However, in the recycled fibers from the chemical pulp, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased. In OCC, which seems to contain fractions of semi-chemical pulp and mechanical pulp (GP), and which is recycled pulp from corrugated boxes, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased disastrously. We believe recycled cellulosic fibers (recycled chemical pulp and OCC in this case), which went through hornification, were less resistant to the mechanical impact than virgin chemical pulp. For virgin chemical pulp, impact refining allowed no significant fiber length shortening, high WRV, and high mechanical strength.

  • We synthesized thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer containing carboxylic acid group and TPV (thermoplastic vulcanizate). We measured the mechanical, grip, debris, contact angle and adhesion properties according to introducing acid group in elastomer structure. Mechanical and wet slip properties were improved because of the hydrogen bonding by introduction of acid group. Also adhesion strength was increased as increasing of surface polarity by carboxylic acid group. The debris property of TPV made from TPU containing carboxylic acid group was improved.

  • Many small scale Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are currently being constructed at many rural areas. The STPs in rural area suffer from low concentration and large inflow quantity fluctuation during wet weather mainly due to illicit combined sewer system. Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) is a process effectively coping with these obstacles. The main objective of this study was to evaluate SBR with high hydraulic loading and low inflow concentration. The operating conditions tested were: organic loading rate = $0.17-0.42KgBOD/m^3/d$, hydraulic loadings = $12.1-61.5m^3/m^2/d$, average MLSS concentration = 2500 mg/L, F/M ratio = 0.026-0.17 KgBOD/Kg MLSS, HRT = 9-12 hr HRT, and SRT = 5.6-33.6 days. Organic loading rate on SBR did not impact significantly on BOD and SS removal efficiencies. To increase treatment efficiencies, low hydraulic loading rate with low concentration was required. The results suggested that low influent concentration with high inflow rates during wet weather requires extended time for settling.

  • Timber boardwalk decks are widely installed in parks and scenic areas to provide pedestrians an elevated footpath as well as harmony with the surrounding natural scene. In order to extend the lifespan of boardwalks in the outdoor environment, industrially treated pine timber, such as Pinus sylvestris, is often adopted. However, accidents of pedestrians injured by damaged boardwalk decks have been constantly reported. Therefore, the mechanical behavior of two different types of treated timber was examined in this study under repeated wetting and drying. An increasing number of radial cracks appeared with increasing length and width as more cycles were performed. A loss of more than 40% of the screw withdrawal capacity was observed in both end grain and face grain for the two types of timber after twelve accelerated wet-dry cycles, which coincides with the observation of damaged timber boardwalks in the field investigation. At the same time, it was found that both the compressive and the flexural strength was not sensitive to the wet-dry cycles especially at large cycle numbers.

  • In this review, surface modification methods of hydrophobic poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane are introduced and their improved hydrophilicity results are discussed. Fluoropolymer based membranes, represented by PTFE membranes have been used in various membrane separation processes, including membrane distillation, oil separation and gas separation. However, despite excellent physical properties such as chemical resistance, heat resistance and high mechanical strength, the strong hydrophobicity of PTFE membrane surface has become a challenging factor in expanding its membrane separation application. To improve the separation performance of PTFE membranes, wet chemical, hydrophilic coating, plasma, irradiation and atomic layer deposition are applied, modifying the surface property of PTFE membranes while maintaining their inherent properties.
