Temporal and spatial fluctuations of surface water temperature in Yeosu Bay for the period from 2010 to 2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 32 stations in the south coast of Korea. Temperatures in the northern part of the bay are higher in summer and lower in winter than in the southern part of the bay. The lowest and highest temperature of the annual mean are found at the eastern coast of POSCO and at the west of Dae Island, respectively. Cold water masses appear at estuarine area when the discharge of Sumjin river is affluent. Amplitude of temperature fluctuation whose period is less than semi-diurnal is largest at Hadong coast and around Dae Island. Spectral analysis of surface water temperature shows a significant peak at a periodic fluctuation of 0.5 to 24 days and about 15-day period of predominant fluctuation is most frequent in Yeosu Bay. From the cross-correlation analysis of temperature fluctuations, Yeosu Bay can be classified into six areas; the south area affected by South Sea of Korea, the mixed area in the center of the bay, the estuarine area affected by river discharge at the north of the bay, the hot waste water area near Hadong coast, the area around Dae Island and the area near Noryang Channel affected by the water in Jinju Bay, respectively.
The tidal flat area of south and west coast consists of 2.4% of total land area of Korea. About 83% of tidal flat is located at the west coast, and the remaining tidal flat is located at the south coast. This tidal flat is also divided for administrative regions which are Gyeonggi Province(35.1%), Chungnam Province(12.7%) Jeonbuk Province(4.7%), Jeonnam Province(44.0%) and Gyeongnam Province(3.5%). The tidal flat of west coast of Korea is one of the most important stopover site for shorebirds on the East Asia-Australia Flyway. The tidal flat is used for feeding and resting place by migratory shorebirds. Generally, waterbirds including migratory shorebirds are considered as key species to show the superiority of wetland. By the criteria of Lamsar Convention in the basis of waterbird, at least 14 coastal wetlands in Korea have to be internationally important wetlands. The factors to affect the distribution of shorebirds at the certain tidal flat are closely related with 1) the distribution of benthic invertebrates, potential prey of shorebirds 2) the availability of roosting site 3) the size of tidal flat 4) the intensity of human disturbance. In this paper, we summarized the regional status of tidal flat of Korea and its conservation methods related with migratory waterbirds.
The variations of monthly mean sea levels along the coast of Korea anre studied graphic and harmonic methods with the data from 9 tides stations and compared with the variations of atmospheric pressure and the changes in density of sea water measured near some of the stations. The monthly mean sea level generally rises in Summer to Autumn, and falls in Winter to Spring and its range is from 20 cm to 50 cm. The variation of monthly mean sea level is of annual type, having one maximum and one minimum. The semi-range of annual components is 10.5 cm at Pusan and increases to the north in the west coast, to 20.8 cm at Inchon. It's phase is, on the whole, similar for the entire coast with about 210 (middle of August), except at Inchon, 200 . The variation of monthly mean sea level is mainly isostatic, or caused by those of sea water density and atmospheric pressure. Especially, the steric effect is predominant on the south- east coast around Pusan. However, in shallow long bays and estuaries on the west coast, the river runoff effect as well as local wind effect is also considerable. Magnitudes of annual variations at each stations are not constant, but widely variable from year to year. On the east and south coast, especially at Ulneungdo and Pusan the variations are large, which seem to be connected with the shifting of main current axes or current patterns in the offing.
A battery of sediment bioassays was performed for the sediments from the intertidal flat zone along the middle west coast of Korea to assess their potential toxicity. In the bioassays, three crustaceans, Daphnia magna, Nitocra spines, and Hyalella aztec a were exposed to $16\%$ sediments (wet weight) collected from 14 sites. Immobility($\%$) was checked as an endpoint after 24- and 48-h exposure of Daphnia magna and after 96-h exposure of Hyalella azteca and Nitocra spines. Among the three bioassays, the 48-h Daphnia bioassay showed the most distinct differential sensitivity in relation to sediment contamination, while the Nitocra and the Hyalella bioassays failed to show the differential sensitivity properly among the sites classified as polluted. Significantly different levels of immobility ($\%$) were obtained between the sites classified as chemical/nutrient polluted and the sites classified as non-polluted in the Daphnia bioassays, but not in the Nitocra bioassay and the Hyalella bioassay. Some differences of toxic response to the same sediments among bioassays were observed, suggesting that there may be a chemical specificity of response sensitivity to sediment toxicity, due to differences in bio-availability of sediment toxicants among test species.
Seventy-five Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates from the surface seawater of the Geum River Estuary area, on the west coast of Korea, were analyzed for the presence of virulence genes and susceptibility to 17 different antimicrobials. All 75 isolates were examined for the presence of two virulence genes (tdh or trh) using polymerase chain reaction; Only one of the isolates possessed the tdh or trh gene. According to the results of disk diffusion susceptibility tests, all of the strains were resistant to penicillin G, 92.0% were resistant to ampicillin, 82.7% were resistant to amoxicillin, 2.7% were resistant to ciprofloxacin, 2.7% were resistant to trimethoprim, 1.3% were resistant to cephalothin, and 1.3% were resistant to erythromycin. However, all of the strains were susceptible to amikacin, cefoxitin, chloramphenicol, gentamycin, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, rifampin, streptomycin, and tetracycline. The average minimum inhibitory concentrations for ampicillin for V. parahaemolyticus was 557.6 ㎍/mL. These results not only provide novel insight into the necessity for seawater sanitation in Geum river estuary area, but they help reduce the risk of contamination of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.
A marine geological investigation of the glass sand deposit in the beach along the west coast of Ahnmyeon Island, South Chung Cheong Province, Korea was carried out to solve the problen of sand material migration, textural properties of the sands and the glass sand reserve for future exploitation. Several bos coring analyses by means of the internal sedimentary structure.i.e., cross- stratification show significantly that most sands are moving and accumulation along the mean vector direction of $N20^{\circ}E-N60^{\circ}$ E in the area investigated. The average mean size of the sand sediments in the area studied ranges from 0.212mm to 0.275mm. The mechanism of sand migration in the area is considered to be interplay between longshore drift and flood tidal current. The sorting value of the sands ranges from 0.24 to 0.50. Therefore, these sand sediments are characteristic to be "well sorted". The average chemical composition of the glass sand in the area is the following: $SiO\_2$:-90.8%, $Al_2O_3$: -2.18%, $Fe_2O_3$:-0.73%, CaO:-1.79. The binocular microscope examination of the sands show that most of the sands are characteristically ice- clear quartz in mineral composition and their count percentage is mostly 92% or 96%.
The author investigated the plant sociological studies on the flora of Inchon districts coast area. (It contains also province of Buchun, Kumpo, and Hwasung, the island of Kanghwa.) The scenery of the west coast in Korea is very curious, because the soil in this area contains comapratively large amount of mud and small sand. Some parts of this area is covered with only mud, and the area between the line of high tije and line of low tide is very vast. When a low tide was appearel, there were vast moddel places appeared about 10 km in length. The author could distinguish $\varepsilon$ different types of communties in this zone. (1) Suaeda jatonica community (2) Statice japonica community (3) Scirtus triqueier community (4) Zoy_ia community (5) Phragmites community (6) Carex Pumilla community (7) Atriolex subsodata community (8) Rosa rugasa community (1), (2), (3), (4) communities can grow under the high tide. (When the high tide comes they soaked in the sea water.) (1) Suaeda community is the most popular type of the Yellow sea. It is very wonderful scene that the vast area (the length of 10 km) is covered with this Suaeda, and it looks like to be painted with blood. (2) Staice (3) Scirpus (4) Zoysia community is can fully maintain their glorious life in the sea water. It is due to the this plants tolerance of salt. (1), (2), (3), (4) communities are very strong to the tolerance of salt, especially the Suaeda is remarkable. The structure and some sucession I trend of each community were studied in detail and the mutual relations among the communites were also concluded.
The intertidal flat depositional environment of Southern Nam Yang Bay, west coast of Korea has been studied to understand textural, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics. The intertidal flat environment can be divided into two subenvironments, that is, the mud flat and the sand flat due to the sediment textures. From thd outer sand flat to the inner mud flat the grain size of the sediments decreases and the mud content increases. It is suggested that the intertidal flat environment is in the progradation of marsh deposits in the mud flat. The chemical composition of the sediments is related to the sediment textures. The chemical index of maturity of the mud flat sediments is higher than that of the sand flat sediments. The clay minerals of the sediments are chlorite, illite, montmorillonite and kaolinite.

Using multi beam echo sounder, side scan sonar and scuba diving equipment, ceramic type, uneven type and semicircle-ramus type reefs into sandy bottom were ascertained, the depth of submersion in 7.2-10.3m on the coast of Gangneung, East of Korea, forty uneven type artificial reefs(AR) were totally buried into the sandy bottom. Two of five semicircle-ramus type ARs had only of their top area exposed. For most of the 45 ceramic reefs, only the upper 25-150cm of ARs were visible. The burial pattern is different in west and east side of the reefs, where the east side is deeply buried compared to the west side. From these results. it is recommended that sufficient analysis of bottom structure and materials especially in the sandy sea area should be undertaken in order to determine the best type of artificial reefs to be deployed and the best location for depoloyment.
The pathogenic Vibrio genus contains halophilic bacteria that are distributed in marine and freshwater environments. Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio vulnificus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are potent human pathogens and leading causes of septicemia, wound infection, and seafood-borne gastroenteritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of pathogenic Vibrio species in seawater off the west coast of Korea. Sixty-four seawater samples were obtained from different sites in Gomso Bay and Byeonsan from April 2018 to November 2018. Pathogenic Vibrio species were detected using a combination of most probable number (MPN)-polymerase chain reaction methods. V. cholerae, V. vulnificus, and V. parahaemolyticus were found in 0.0%, 20.3%, and 65.6% of seawater samples, respectively. Quantitative results revealed 3.6-23 MPN/100 mL of V. vulnificus, and 3.6-930 MPN/100 mL of V. parahaemolyticus in the samples. Overall, these results provide new insight into the necessity for seawater sanitation in Gomso Bay and Byunsan; they also provide evidence that will help reduce outbreaks of seafood-borne illness caused by pathogenic Vibrio species.
