  • Weldline movement of tailored blanks originates from two sources, primary and secondary. Primary movement occurs by geometrical reason, that is, just scratched lines on the no-weld blanks move during drawing to be fitted to geometrical change. Secondary movement is induced by the characteristics of tailored blanks itself. The primary movement was mainly dependent on the weldline location and not affected by the type of material. The secondary movement caused by laser welding and/or small strength difference in this study was not dominant compared with primary movement. The formability of tailored blanks always inferior to those of original blanks. This is due to the existence of hardened weld bead. The closer a weldline is to punch corner where drawing is most active, the worse its formability becomes. This is because the weldline prohibits the drawing process. It was confirmed by measuring diagonal length at the blank corner. The mode of fracture was changed form wall break to draw break when the weldling was close to the punch corner.

  • This paper addresses a welding task sequencing for robot arc welding process planning. Although welding task sequencing is an essential step in the welding process planning, it has not been considered through a systematic approach, but it depends rather on empirical knowledge. Thus, an effective task sequencing for robot arc welding is required. Welding perations can be classified by the number of welding robots. Genetic algorithms are applied to tackle those welding task sequencing problems. A genetic algorithm for traveling salesman problem (TSP) is utilized to determine welding task sequencing for a MultiWeldline-SingleLayer problem. Further, welding task sequencing for multiWeldline-MultiLayer welding is investigated and appropriate genetic algorithms are introduced. A random key genetic algorithm is also proposed to solve multi-robot welding sequencing : MultiWeldline with multi robots. Finally, the genetic algorithm are implemented for the welding task sequencing of three dimensional weld plate assemblies. Robot welding operations conforming to the algorithms are simulated in graphic detail using a robot simulation software IGRIP.

  • Painting process or coating with acrylic film may improve the surface defects of injection molded parts deteriorated by weldlines. flow marks. and etc. However such processes increase the production costs and increase environmental problems. Recently various types of rapid mold heating & cooling technology have been developed in order to improve surface quality of products. In this study. the heating & cooling performance of a telephone case mold is investigated by heat transfer analysis, in which the rapid mold heating & reeling technology is applied. The surface temperature of the mold was measured using thermal image camera and compared with analysis results. The influence of the rapid mold heating & cooling technology on weldline appearance and cycle time increase was also examined.

  • Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. At the welded contact region, a 'V'-shaped notch is formed on the surface of the molded part. This 'V'-notch deteriorates not only surface appearance but also mechanical strength of the molded part. To eliminate or reduce weldlines so as to improve the weldline strength, the mold temperature at the corresponding weld locations should be maintained higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. The present study implements high-frequency induction heating in order to rapidly raise mold surface temperature without a significant increase in cycle time. This induction heating enables to local mold heating so as to eliminate or reduce weldlines in an injection-molded plastic part. The effect of induction heating conditions on the weldline strength and surface appearance of an injection-molded part is investigated.

  • The cause of flow mark defect is known as non-uniform temperature of mold surface when the flow front meets the cold cavity. The exact definition and classification of Flow mark is not clear because the mechanism of flow mark is not figured out till now. Any injection molding analysis software can not predict the flow mark phenomena. To solve weldline and flow mark defects, the gate thickness is reduced to increase the melt front velocity and the melt front velocity of the flow mark area is increased from 82.3mm/s to 104.7mm/s. In addition, the bulk temperature of the flow mark area is increased from $178.3^{\circ}C$to $215.2^{\circ}C$ by adding a cold slug well. The flow mark phenomena can be greatly reduced by increasing the flow front velocity and elevating the bulk temperature.

  • Today, looking at the trend of product development, interests of injection technology to reduce weldline are growing because of increases of polymer composite materials that containing functional elements and demand of no-painted injection in accordance with environmental regulations. In this paper, surface temperatures of mold increased using high temperature gas for elimination of weldline and characteristics of weldline are analyzed according to mold temperature($60^{\circ}C{\sim}120^{\circ}C$).

  • Weldlines are generated during the injection molding process when two or more melt flows are brought into contact. The weldlines are unavoidable in the cases of presence of holes or inserts, multi-gated delivery systems, significant thickness change, etc. • The purpose of this study is to investigate the weldline movement of the laser welded sheets during the warm deep drawing process. For this investigation, Five steps of temperature ranges, from room temperature to $200^{\circ}C$, and two kinds of thickness combination, 0.8 mm${\times}$1.2 mm and 0.8 mm${\times}$1.6 mm SCP1 material sheets, were adopted. Also, the numerical analysis using the PAM-STAMP has been carried out with the same models as the specimens. As a result the higher temperature was adopted, the less weld-line movement was observed.
