  • The residual stress generated when the steel plates were produced, did not influence on the out-of-plane deformation and residual stress generated by welding. When the initial deflection shape was a concave(Type I), the out-of-plane deformation became the same shape as that of the initial deflection and its magnitude became small. When the initial deflection made a winding in the welding direction(Type III), the out-of-plane deformation became large in the plate width. The initial deflection shape did not influence on residual stress and plastic strain produced by welding.

  • As a considerable, experimental approach, an autocarriage type of $CO_2$ welding machine and a MIG(metal inert gas) welding robot in the inert gas atmosphere were utilized in order to realize Al 5083 welding to hull and relevant components of green leisure ships. This study aims at investigating the effect of welding conditions(current, voltage, welding speed, etc.) on thermal deformation that occurs as welding operation and tensile characteristics after welding, by using Al 5083, nonferrous material, applied to manufacturing of eco-environmental leisure ships. With respect to welding condition to minimize the thermal deformation, 150 A and 16 V at the wire-feed rate of 6 mm/sec were acquired in the process of welding Al 5083 through an auto carriage type of $CO_2$ welding feeder. As to tensile characteristics of Al 5083 welding through a MIG welding robot, most of tensile specimens showed the fracture behavior on HAZ(heat affected zone) located at the area joined with weld metal, except for some cases. Especially, for the case of the Al specimen with 5 mm thickness, 284.62 MPa of tensile strength and 11.41 % of elongation were obtained as an actual allowable tensile stress-strain value. Mostly, after acquiring the optimum welding condition, the relevant welding data and technical requirements might be provided for actual welding operation site and welding procedure specification (WPS).

  • In this study, an age-hardened 6061-T6 alloy sheet was used, which is commonly utilized for auto parts. The junction strength characteristics in relation to the stirring speed and welding speed were studied in accordance with the friction stir welding rotation of the tool pin. Micro hardness measurements of A type and B type pins, for a welding speed of 400 mm/min and a tool rotational speed 3000 rpm, were obtained as Hv104 and Hv111, respectively. For a welding speed of 200 mm/min and a tool rotational speed of 2000 rpm, we obtained Hv48 and Hv50 for A and B type pins, respectively. Microstructure observation showed that the stirring portion was fine and uniform, which occurred because of its plastic deformation. In the thermomechanically affected zone, partial recrystallization was present because of the plastic deformation. The crystal grains in the heat affected zone were coarsened due to the heat generated by friction stir welding.

  • In order to understand the basic knowledge on the model of heat source in hybrid welding, authors have conducted finite element analysis to calculate heat distribution using three heat source models of non-split type and split type(Volume, Volume-Volume, Volume-Surface). From the research result, we can confirm that Volume-Volume heat source of split type is suitable for the analysis of heat distribution.

  • This study investigates the fatigue characteristics of SM 490 A material specimens for the railway vehicle due to the welding type. The more stress ratio decreases, the more strength of fillet welded specimen decreases. At speciallly, when the stress ratio of TN(Plate with transverse fillet welded rib) specimens decreases 0.5, 0.1, and -0.1, the fatigue limit decreases unifomly. The strength of TN is higher than it of NCN in the compare of fillet welding type, but the strength of NCN(Non load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint) is higher than it of CN(Load-carrying cruciform fillet welded joint), which these specimens have the rib in the both side. We analysis the strains on the weld positions of the TN specimens during the fatigue test for the investigation of crack initiation and crack growth. In the theses results, we could find the fatigue crack initiation point and time.

  • Since stainless steel plates have good mechanical properties, weldability, appearance and resistance of corrosion, these are traditionally used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. And they are mainly fabricated by spot welding. But fatigue strength of their spot welded joint is considerably influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors. Thus a reasonable and systematic criterion for long life design of spot welded body structure must be established. In this report, strain energy density was analyzed by using 3-dimensional finite element model about the IB-type spot welded lap joint under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length and width. From their results, it was found that fatigue strength of the IB-type spot welded lap joints could be effectively and systematically rearranged by strain energy density at the edge of nugget.

  • Wire meling characteristics were examined with variation of gas formers such as $MgCO_3, CaCO_3 and Li_ 2CO_ 3$ by self-shielded flux cored arc welding. The flux cored wire of overlap type was welded by DCRP. The results obtainedareas follows. 1) Drop type was observed with no gas former, repelled type with MgCO_3$ added and short circuit type with $Li_2CO_3$ added. The variation of transfer mode was related to the blowing force of $CO_2$ gas and the surface tension of the slag. 2) Droplet size increased with adding gas formers due to the effect of $CO_2$ gas cushion. 3) Core spikes were observed more frequently with increasing the amount of gas formers.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate worker exposure to welding fume in automobile body shop and to evaluate metal components by type of welding. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Average concentrations of total welding fume without and with ventilation were $5.2mg/m^3$ and $2.49mg/m^3$, respectively. Thus, the average reduction rate of total fume by ventilation was 52.1 %. 2. The highest fume concentration was indicated at shielded arc welding, followed by $CO_2$ gas welding, argon arc welding, and spot welding in order of decreasing concentration. 3. Average respirable fume concentrations without and with ventilation were $2.97mg/m^3$ and $1.64mg/m^3$, respectively. 4. Further analysis of welding fume indicated that total fume consisted of $Fe_2O_3$, ZnO, Mn, Pb, and CuO, in order of decreasing amount. Combined effect of metals was below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)Threshold Limit Values (TLVs).
